Fire in Bronx building leaves 19 people dead, including nine children

• More than five dozen people injured and 13 in critical condition
• City fire commissioner: blaze one of the worst in recent memory

Nineteen people, including nine children, have been killed in an apartment fire in the Bronx borough of New York City, in what the city’s fire commissioner called one of the worst blazes in recent memory.

Stefan Ringel, a senior adviser to Mayor Eric Adams, confirmed the death toll on Sunday. A city official not authorized to speak publicly confirmed the number of children dead.
