Ulhasnagar: A 48-year-old police constable working with Thane traffic police was arrested by the Anti-corruption bureau, Thane unit for accepting a bribe of Rs 500. The constable demanded a monthly bribe of Rs 700 from the gas cylinder rickshaw driver, which he later settled at Rs 500.
The police said a police constable identified as Ganesh Chaudhary (48), is posted at the Vitthalwadi unit of Thane traffic police.
The police said the complainant is an auto-rickshaw tempo driver with Bharat gas agency in Ulhasnagar. The complainant alleged he was asked to pay Rs 700 monthly to run the tempo auto with a gas cylinder in the area. Or else he will register a case on the vehicle for violating traffic rules and will keep harassing him. The driver approached the ACB, Thane unit on June 30. A trap was laid on July 1, and Chaudhary was caught red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 500", said a police officer from ACB, Thane.
The police said a case has been under section of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The trap was laid by Sushma Patil, Police Inspector, ACB, Thane and her team. Dr Panjabrao Ugle, Superintendent of Police, ACB, Thane had appealed citizens to approach the ACB, if they found any such demand or corruption case from government officials. They can call the toll free number 1064.
