SC directs CBSE, CISCE to reveal criteria for assessment of Class 12 students in two weeks

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday gave two weeks' time to CBSE and ICSE boards to reveal the objective criteria in awarding marks to Class XII students; this is in the backdrop of their exams being cancelled on Tuesday in view of the raging Covid pandemic. "We are happy to note that the government has taken the decision to cancel Class XII board exams, but we want that the objective criteria fixed for assessment of marks be place before us," said a vacation Bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari, hearing a PIL by Delhi lawyer Mamta Sharma.

It clarified that it will not give more time for placement of the objective criteria as many students will be taking admissions in colleges in India and abroad on the basis of the Class XII results. It will, however, entertain objections to the criteria and it will also consider issues relating to the Class XII board examinations by the state boards, after resolving the evaluation criteria of CBSE and ICSE.

"Have some patience," Justice Khanwilkar told the lawyers who raised the state board matters, assuring that "SC will protect the interests of all class XII students."

Meanwhile, PM Narendra Modi on Thursday surprised a bunch of CBSE students and their parents by logging into an interactive session organised for them by the Union Education Ministry. He shared encouraging words with them, heard out their anxieties, and received their heartfelt thanks for cancelling the board's Class 12 exams for academic year 2021.

PM Modi's June 1 decision was made keeping in mind the prevailing Covid conditions and the students' health and safety. "I joined you suddenly...Hope I have not disturbed you, you were having fun...it looked like your joy was boundless because the exam was cancelled," the Prime Minister told the students.
