Free Press Journal, Mumbai: Prominent clubs and gymkhanas set to reopen after 15 months of lockdown

After almost 15 months, prominent clubs and gymkhanas in Mumbai have decided to reopen in phases with safety measures in place. Others are still waiting to restart services for their members.

At the Cricket Club of India, Churchgate, walking and jogging facilities in the open areas of the club premises are being permitted with effect from June 7, 2021, from 6 am to 9 am and 6 pm to 9 pm. Shivaji Park Gymkhana, Dadar, said it is starting outdoor games from 5 am to 9 am and 6 pm to 9 pm and Gymnasium (non-AC) till 4 pm with 50 per cent capacity from June 8.

Otters Club, Bandra, is set to reopen from June 10 with 50 per cent capacity till 4 pm on weekdays. Ashok Motwani, chief executive officer (CEO) of Otters Club said, "We will reopen from June 10, as per the state government’s norms. We will also start outdoor games from 6 pm to 9 pm and follow all the COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs)."

National Sports Club of India (NSCI), Worli, informed its members about reopening its excellency bar from June 8 till June 11 between 11 am to 4 pm. NSCI said, "No food services will be available. Guests are strictly not allowed."

At the same time, some clubs and gymkhanas are waiting to reopen. Vernon Miranda, president of the Catholic Gymkhana, Marine Drive, said, "Our premises was converted into a COVID-19 care centre for asymptomatic patients by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Now that the situation is improving. We have requested the BMC to allow us to make tenantable repairs and restart our services. We have been shut for almost 15 months due to the lockdown on account of the pandemic."

Bombay Gymkhana, Fort, Breach Candy Club, Malabar Hill, and Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana, Santacruz, have not announced the reopening of services yet.
