Kolkata: BJP MP John Barla along with Kumarganj MLA Manoj Orao met West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar at Darjeeling Governor’s House to discuss the post-poll violence situation in North Bengal.
Speaking to the media, the BJP Alipurduar MP said that he only spoke on the rising post-poll violence in West Bengal and refused to comment on his demand in giving separate statehood to North Bengal.
Notably, the BJP MP citing ‘non-development’ and ‘post-poll violence’ had several times urged that North Bengal should be made either a separate state or a Union Territory. Barla even claimed that once the pandemic situation becomes normal then in person he will meet President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and will place his demand.

Incidentally, West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh always claimed that the saffron camp is not in favour of dividing or fragmenting the state. Meanwhile, a three member team of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) following the order of Calcutta High Court visited seven districts in West Bengal to take stock of the violence. According to NHRC sources, dividing into five teams the NHRC team visited Siliguri, Cooch Behar, Haroa in North 24 Parganas on Thursday.
It can be recalled that the saffron camp had filed a PIL in High Court regarding increase in post-poll violence and for displaced BJP workers. Following the arguments given by the BJP lawyer Priyanka Tibrewal, the Calcutta High Court had ordered NHRC along with State Human Rights Commission to form a committee and review the places where violence took place and also asked them to submit the report before court by June 30.
