Ex-chief of Brazil’s Indigenous agency charged over murders of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips

Marcelo Xavier is accused of indirectly contributing on the grounds that he failed to take steps to protect workers in the Amazon

Federal police have brought criminal charges against the former head of Brazil’s Indigenous protection agency for alleged acts of omission they believe indirectly paved the way for the murders of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips in the Amazon last year.

Brazil’s former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro made Marcelo Xavier the head of the Indigenous agency Funai in July 2019, six months into his environmentally-devastating four-year administration.

Russia-Ukraine war at a glance: what we know on day 450 of the invasion

Volodymyr Zelenskiy addresses Arab League leaders in Saudi Arabia; US to back international effort to train Ukrainian fighter pilots

Volodymyr Zelenskiy has addressed Arab League leaders in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He asked them not to turn a blind eye to what was happening in Ukraine. “Unfortunately there are some among the world, and here among you, who turn a blind eye to those cases and illegal annexations. I am here so everyone can take an honest look, no matter how hard the Russians try to influence, there must be independence,” he said.

After the visit, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister declared the country to be neutral in the conflict.

The US has said it will back a joint international effort to train Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16 and other modern fighter jets, marking a significant boost to western support for Kyiv as it prepares a major counteroffensive. The news was welcomed by Zelenskiy and the UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak, whose RAF will be involved in the initiative.

Russia has imposed sanctions on the former US president Barack Obama, in response to the US doing likewise to 300 individuals, companies and institutions. The US measures are largely targeted at energy production.

Ukraine claimed it destroyed 19 drones and missiles out of 28 launched on Friday morning. “Three Kalibr missiles launched from the Black Sea and 16 drones were shot down. Shelling continues on an almost daily basis,” the Ukrainian air force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said. Maksym Kozytskyi, the governor of Lviv, has posted on Telegram to say that five drones were shot down overnight above his western Ukrainian region.

Vladimir Putin has said the west is trying to break up Russia into different states based on ethnic and national lines. In a speech on Friday he said the sanctions were helping unite the Russian people rather than divide them. In comments reported by Reuters, he said: “There are attempts to drive a wedge between peoples of our country. They say Russia should be divided up into tens of different states.”

The Russian security council secretary, Nikolai Patrushev, has claimed that the US was involved in the killing of a pro-war military blogger in a bomb blast in St Petersburg in April, and the car bombing of a nationalist writer and politician earlier in May.

More than 100,000 people have enlisted in the Russian army so far this year, the former president Dmitry Medvedev has said, as Moscow seeks to recruit volunteers for its offensive in Ukraine.

Five members of a Belarusian regiment fighting with Ukrainian forces have been killed in the flashpoint city of Bakhmut, a Belarusian opposition leader living in exile said on Friday. “Heartbroken by the death of five members of the Belarusian Kastus Kalinouski regiment fighting for Ukraine in Bakhmut,” Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said on Twitter.

The G7 group of nations has urged Russia to stop its objection to the renewal of the Black Sea grain deal and told it to halt “threatening global food supplies”.

Russia has refused the latest US request for consular access to the detained Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in March on suspicion of spying.

A judge is poised to decide whether a Massachusetts Air National Guard member accused of leaking highly classified military documents, including sensitive information about the war in Ukraine, will remain behind bars while he awaits trial. Jack Teixeira is due back in federal court in Worcester, Massachusetts, where a magistrate judge is expected to hear arguments on prosecutors’ request to keep the 21-year-old locked up before issuing a ruling.

The Pentagon overestimated the value of the ammunition, missiles and other equipment it sent to Ukraine by about $3bn, a Senate aide and a defence official told Reuters on Thursday. The error may lead the way for more weapons being sent to Kyiv for its defence against Russian forces.

West Ham into Conference League final after Fornals finishes off AZ Alkmaar

  • AZ Alkmaar 0-1 West Ham (agg: 3-1)
  • Hammers seal place in first European final in 47 years

When it was over most of the statistics pointed to a night of AZ Alkmaar dominance. They had more possession, more shots, more territory and more corners. Yet what AZ lacked was a way of making any of it count and, as hard as they tried to find a way through, it never seemed they were capable of stopping a dogged and professional West Ham from reaching their first European final in 47 years.

Ultimately, for all that their inability to guard possession made for an anxious second half, West Ham would succeed in grinding AZ down. There were, of course, some nervy moments and with 20 minutes remaining Declan Rice could be seen urging his leggy teammates to give it one last push.

First records of human kissing may date back 1,000 years earlier than estimated

Evidence suggests ancient Mesopotamians kissed and practice could be more culturally universal than previously thought

Humanity’s earliest record of kissing dates back about 4,500 years in the ancient Middle East, 1,000 years earlier than previously thought, according to researchers.

Scientists have highlighted evidence that suggests kissing was practised in some of the earliest Mesopotamian societies and documented in ancient texts from 2500BC that have been largely overlooked.

‘Why do pastors keep falling?’: inside the shocking downfall of Hillsong church

In a new docuseries, the glamorous, Instagram-friendly church is put under the spotlight with new scandalous revelations

Before the Hot Priest in the BBC comedy series Fleabag, there was Carl Lentz. For a time the young, tattooed “hype-priest” was the face of the global megachurch Hillsong, preaching a cool brand of Christianity to sports stars and celebrities such as Justin Bieber.

“Carl was incredibly charismatic, an insanely good speaker, able to break down the Bible in relevant, almost street terms,” explains the film-maker Stacey Lee. “He was funny, he was vulnerable, he just gave so much of himself. He unto himself became his own celebrity.

Manchester City in Champions League final after Silva leads rout of Real Madrid

It was not even close, which was surely the most impressive thing from Manchester City’s point of view as they roared into the Champions League final; another step closer to ultimacy, immortality.

The power came during an eviscerating first-half, when Bernardo Silva scored two and Real Madrid were reduced to quivering wrecks, fortunate that the damage was not heavier. Jack Grealish had one of the games of his life and he was ably supported by pretty much everybody around him.

Hamer blow fells Middlesbrough to put Coventry in Championship playoff final

No one can argue that Mark Robins does not deserve his new four-year contract extension. Not content with leading his team from League Two to the Championship, Coventry’s manager has now guided them to the verge of football’s promised land.

As Gustavo Hamer’s winner, bent superbly into the top corner, secured the visitors a Wembley playoff final date with Luton and potential Premier League entree, Steve Gibson, Middlesbrough’s owner, proved a study of despair in the directors’ box.

Quest to save family plot of land led from Guatemala to death at US border

Bayron Xol, 26, hoped to send money home to defend smallholding in Indigenous Q’eqchi’ territory from encroachment by African palm plantation

The last time Florinda Xol saw her son Bayron, the 26-year-old was leaving for the US from their rural Q’eqchi’ Maya community of Río Zarquito in northern Guatemala. He felt a responsibility to help his widowed mother make ends meet – and hold on to their small plot of land.

But he never made it. “This was my greatest fear,” Florinda said through tears. Bayron was one of 40 people who died in an immigration detention centre fire in Ciudad Juárez on the US-Mexico border in March.

Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim submits late £5.5bn bid to buy Manchester United

  • Improved offer includes clearing the club’s £1bn debt
  • Bid also pledges fund for club and surrounding community

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani has made a dramatic fourth bid for Manchester United, with an improved offer of no more than £5.5bn which includes the clearance of the £1bn debt and a fund solely for the club and surrounding community.

More than two weeks have passed since Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Ineos owner, each submitted what were supposedly final bids for United. The Qatari banker’s offer then was close to £5bn for 100%, while Ratcliffe’s was thought to be for a stake of a little over 50%, leaving Avram and Joel Glazer, two of the siblings who collectively own a majority share, with a 20% stake.

The bloodshed which began on 3 May has mostly abated, but there is little hope of a swift return to normality.

Germany FA vice-president apologises for post mocking Volodymyr Zelenskiy

  • Hermann Winkler refers to Zelenskiy as ‘former Ukrainian actor’
  • Ukraine president visited Berlin to meet Olaf Scholz on Sunday

The German Football Association (DFB) vice-president, Hermann Winkler, apologised on Monday for a social media post mocking the visit of the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, to Berlin.

Zelenskiy had talks with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, on Sunday, with many parts of central Berlin locked down for security reasons during his visit. Winkler, who heads the Saxony Football Association in the east of the country, had complained about road closures and other security restrictions, saying “at least the Soviet memorial in Treptower Park is still standing for now”. He said the city had shut down for the visit “of a former Ukrainian actor”. Zelenskiy was an actor before his election.

The Guardian view on Turkey’s election results: a step towards autocracy? | Editorial

Confounding the polls, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is now on course to extend his rule into a third decade

In the lead-up to Turkey’s presidential election on Sunday, there seemed to be good grounds to believe that voters were about to turn their back on Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s authoritarian brand of nationalism. His assumption of quasi-monarchical presidential powers in 2018 had succeeded in uniting a perennially divided opposition against him. Polls suggested a close race, but placed the president’s main rival for power, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, significantly ahead. Requiring a vote above 50% to win outright and avoid a runoff, Mr Kılıçdaroğlu’s declared aspiration was to “finish it in the first round”.

That optimism has turned out to be sadly misplaced. As it transpired, it was Mr Erdoğan who almost won at the first time of asking, winning over 49% of votes to Mr Kılıçdaroğlu’s 45%. The coalition led by the president’s Justice and Development party (AKP) is also set to win a surprise majority in the Grand National Assembly. That outcome will stymie opposition attempts to restore parliamentary democracy to Turkey, irrespective of the result of the presidential runoff in a fortnight’s time.
