If all goes as planned then Kalyan station will be all spruced up by December 2025. The Central Railway is planning to construct six new platforms on the east side of the station in order to separate local train from long-distance ones.
The new platforms will exclusively cater to long-distance trains.
This will help decongest the exiting platforms that are currently used by Express train passengers as well.
Kalyan, which is one of the busiest stations on the Central Railway, witnesses more than 600 mail and suburban trains.
During peak hours, railway officials have to stop a few trains in order to allow locals to pass. This wastes a lot of time.
“Any technical failure at Kalyan station like chain pulling, signal failure, track or OHE failure leads to bunching of trains and affects the time by one to two hours.
At times, the bunching is up to Titwala and Ambernath stations. Once the new platforms are constructed, long-distance and local trains will be separated,” said a CR official.
The construction of six new platforms at Kalyan station is part of the 812-crore yard remodeling project. Under this, a flyover will be constructed that will connect with the new platforms.
Besides, the platforms will be accessible from the foot overbridge as well.
“The yard remodeling will segregate suburban and Express trains. This will help improve the punctuality of trains,” said CR’s chief PRO Shivaji Sutar.
