Bhopal/Sidhi: A police team that had gone to arrest a man accused of stocking cough syrup illegally was attacked by villagers with axes and rods on Sunday evening in Sidhi district. The incident took place at Maro village under Manjhauli police station, around 8:30 pm.
Two cops sustained head injuries in the incident. The eight-member police team were returning after arresting the prime accused Rishimuni Kushwaha, when they were attacked by villagers.
As the team was returning with Kushwaha, the latter dodged the police and jumped into a well. Soon the villagers assembled around and attacked the police team with axes and rods, thinking that the cops had thrown Kushwaha into the well.
The team alerted the senior officials and additional force was sent to the village. The cops arrested Kushwaha and booked several unidentified villagers for attacking the police team.
In-charge Manjhauli police station Satish Mishra said the team comprising sub-inspector (SI) Ganga Marco was attacked by villagers. Marco and a constable Altaz Mansuri sustained head injuries, he said.
Kushwaha and two others were booked for illegal stock of cough syrup and several other villagers are booked for attacking the police team, said the cop.
