Cyclone Gulab remnants: Orange alert for Mumbai

MUMBAI: The Met Department has predicted rainfall, at times heavy, in Mumbai, Thane and adjoining areas. This rainfall is a result of the remnants of Cyclone Gulab that has now weakened into depression. The Met Department has issued a red alert for Palghar, Raigad, and Thane, and an orange alert for Mumbai.

Maharashtra, especially central Maharashtra, Konkan including Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. As the cyclone weakens into a low-pressure area and moves westwards, it will cause heavy to very heavy rainfall along with gusty winds up to 40 mph in some districts including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, the Met Department officials said.

The IMD had issued a yellow alert for Mumbai for Monday, indicating moderate to heavy rainfall. “The alert has been upgraded to orange for Tuesday, which is when the Konkan region is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rain. Thane, Palghar, and Raigad are on red alert for Tuesday,” said Shubhangi Bhute, scientist, IMD's regional meteorological centre, Mumbai. “As the cyclone is moving westwards, it is likely to cross Vidarbha and further lose intensity. Mumbai could be most affected on day 2 (Tuesday) due to Cyclone Gulab,” she said.

Mumbai also crossed the 3,000-mm season rainfall mark on Monday afternoon. Total rainfall recorded this year is around 3,400 mm. From June 1 to September 27, the Santa Cruz observatory recorded 2,997.3 mm rainfall. At Colaba observatory, 2,292.5 mm of cumulative rainfall has been recorded during the same period.

This is the third consecutive year that Mumbai rains have crossed the 3,000 mm mark. Last year around this time the cumulative rainfall had touched 3,681 mm while in 2019, it was 3,635 mm during the same time.
