West Bengal: State BJP chief Dilip Ghosh demands civic polls before bypolls

Kolkata: West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh on Saturday demanded to hold the civic polls before the bypolls in the state.

“The civic polls are due for over a year and in a few municipalities, it is more than a year so we demand civic polls first. Moreover, the civic polls are conducted under state election commission so we don’t understand the reason for the delay,” stated Ghosh.

Slamming Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Ghosh said that Mamata wants bypolls as she fears that she will have to resign from the Chief Minister post.

“By unfair means she is the Chief Minister of the state but now she fears that she will have to leave the post for which she wants bypolls,” stated Dilip.

Meanwhile, crying foul against the BJP’s demand, TMC spokesperson and state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said that despite the civic polls being delayed, service is being provided to the common people of West Bengal.

“Despite delay in polls, no one in West Bengal is denied any services. But if an area doesn’t have an elected MLA then people of those areas will have no elected representatives to help them,” mentioned Kunal.

It is pertinent to say that ahead of the polls, election of Murshidabad’s Gangipur and Samshergunj was cancelled earlier due to the death of the candidates being affected by Covid.

Later, due to the second wave of Covid along with two Assembly seats five more Assembly seats were attached. Dinhata, Khardaha, Shantipur, Gosaba and Bhawanipore seat will now go for bypolls.

Notably, despite winning the Bhawanipore seat Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay vacated the seat for TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee as she had lost the Nandigram seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari and have to be elected within six months as she is the Chief Minister of the state.

According to TMC sources, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay will contest from the Khardaha seat.

Incidentally, West Bengal BJP had held a workshop for the elected MLAs at their election office in Kolkata’s Hastings.

Talking to media, Dilip Ghosh stated that through their elected representatives the saffron camp will connect with the common people and also that every MLA will have to inform the party about their works.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said that the workshop under BJP general secretary (organization) Shiv Prakash was a boost for the BJP MLAs to tackle the treasury bench of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
