Thane: Saree offering ritual performed to save Waldhuni river from water pollution

Thane: Following the rituals performed at Ganga river by offering saree, activists from Ulhasnagar too followed the ritual by offering saree and performing puja to save the Waldhuni river.

The ritual of offering saree was performed on Wednesday by offering seven sarees of seven different colours. The sarees were then distributed to the local villagers who joined the ritual and are saviour of Wadhuni river.

Shashikant Dayma, an activist from Ulhasnagar who organised the ritual on Wednesday claims, it was performed at the spot where Waldhuni river starts. "After the dam overflows, the water flows to Waldhuni river. Its the time, when water starts coming and performing ritual was to save the rover from water and chemical pollution," added Dayma stating the sarees for the rituals were donated by Satyavan Jagtap, a social worker from Ulhasnagar. "Such ritual and puja was first time perform with the help of villagers from Kakole grampancyat and active saviours of Waldhuni river," added Dayma.

The ritual of holding the seven sarees as chain and performing puja was marked in the presence of Reshma Naresh Gaikar, sarpanch and Naresh Gaikar, Upsarpanch of Kakole grampancyat including Dr. Snehal Donde, water warrior of Thane district, Sarita Khanchandani, Hirali foundation and activist including Kajol Mulchandani and Anushkha Sharma among others.

"Saree offering ceremony symbolizes the protection to mother river as in case of woman. Thus, our activity will definately raise brow of authorities and pollution making compaines against river pollution. Its high time everyone has to unite against river pollution or else coming generations will never forgive us," said Sarita Khanchandani, activist and founder of Hirali foundation who joined the ritual.
