Kolkata: West Bengal Secretariat sources on Friday said that the Election Commission of India (ECI) had asked the ruling Trinamool Congress government to start preparing for the bypolls due in seven Assembly seats.
“The bypoll which is due in November might take place on the scheduled time as ECI asked us to start preparing for it,” said sources from Nabanna.
Notably, on June 23, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give permission to hold bypolls as the Covid situation in West Bengal is conducive to hold the polls.
The TMC supremo was also heard saying that with only seven days of campaigning ahead of the bypolls, the TMC will be ready for the polls.
Crying foul against the TMC supremo, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) urged the ECI for not giving permission for bypolls till the pandemic is on.
Talking to Free Press Journal, BJP West Bengal general secretary Sayantan Basu said that the BJP is ready for the election.
“Bypoll would create havoc in people’s life during the ongoing pandemic for which we wanted to defer it. The civic polls are long due for which the they should be conducted before the bypolls,” stated Sayantan.
It is pertinent to say that ahead of the polls, election of Murshidabad’s Gangipur and Samshergunj was cancelled earlier due to the death of the candidates by being affected by Covid.
Later, due to the second wave of Covid along with two Assembly seats five more Assembly seats were attached. Dinhata, Khardaha, Shantipur, Gosaba and Bhawanipore seat will now go for bypolls.
Notably, despite winning the Bhawanipore seat Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay vacated the seat for TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee as she had lost the Nandigram seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari and have to be elected within six months as she is the Chief Minister of the state.
According to TMC sources, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay will contest from the Khardaha seat.
It is pertinent to mention that in a recent closed-door meeting of BJP's working committee West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh had instructed the saffron camp cadres to start preparations of the bypolls.
