Despite political odds, the BJP has swept the Zila Panchayat Chairperson polls in UP, managing to secure 67 out of 75 districts in the state. This is a remarkable turnaround as in the recently held elections for the post of Zila Panchayat members the BJP was a straggler in the third spot with its numbers fewer than that of the Samajwadi Party and independents.
The Samajwadi Party could win six only and the lone Congress candidate in Raibarelli district, the stronghold of Gandhi family, has lost the seat to BJP. SP candidates lost in districts such as Mainpuri, Kannauj, Badaun, Ferozabad and Faruukhabad, which are known as its strongholds. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had not taken part in these elections and its elected Panchayat members supported BJP in large numbers. Most of the independent member too supported the BJP.
