Kolkata: Incidents of gang-rapes as a part of post-poll violence by the alleged Trinamool Congress supporters made it to the headlines ever since May 2.
Amidst the chaos, a section of women moved the Supreme Court seeking its intervention into the matter.
With the apex court seeking SIT probe on the post-poll violence in West Bengal, several pleas from women across the state demanded the apex court’s intervention on gang-rape issues.
One of the applicants who is a senior citizen wrote that she was gang-raped in front of her six-year-old grandson and her daughter-in-law was beaten up mercilessly by TMC supporters the very next day of the poll results.
A 17-year-old victim wrote that she was dragged into a nearby forest by the TMC supporters and was raped by a group of TMC goons for almost an hour and was later sent to a child welfare home for which she couldn’t meet her family members.
“My family members were threatened for their political affiliation and police didn’t act and were mere spectators and on the contrary we were pressured to take back the FIR,” read the application of the 17 year-old girl.
The petitioners of ‘sexual violence’ in West Bengal sought transfer of investigation in their cases to a Special Investigation Team and also requested that the trial should be held outside West Bengal.
Notably, on May 25, the apex court had written to the Trinamool Congress government, NHRC, NCPCR, NCW, and the Centre, regarding the violence in West Bengal during and after the elections. On the same day, the TMC government had informed the Supreme Court that a five-judge bench of Calcutta High Court had already taken over this issue.
