In a survey conducted by Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation, authorities found 505 buildings that were built in-between the years 1994 to 1998, with low quality sand and poor construction work. Deputy Municipal Commissioner of UMC, Yuvraj Badane said that these establishments have been asked to submit structural audit to access the damage.
After two building's slab collapsed killing around 12 people in the last 15 days. The authorities from Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation on May 29, started a survey of the structures built during 1994-1998 year and were built with illegality.
Dr. Raja Dayani, Municipal Commissioner, UMC had formed one team each in four wards and asked them to carry out the survey and submit a report within three days.
As per the report provided by UMC. total 505 structures are in the list including 94 structures in ward number 1, 133 structures in ward number 2, 118 structures in ward number 3 and 160 structures in ward number 4.
After the two recent slabs collapsed, the authorities learnt that they were built through Ulwe sand. "The UMC had taken action against illegal buildings by demolishing the slabs from the corners back in the day. But the developers repaired the slabs and forced residents to live in danger. Further resulting in slab collapse incidents," said an official from UMC.
Yuvraj Badane, PRO and Deputy Municipal Commissioner of UMC confirmed about 505 old poorly constructed buildings as established by the dedicated teams who are still carrying out the survey to establish more such structures. He also said that number of such building can increase with more research.
"We have already sent notices to these structures asking them to carry out a structural audit through a qualified structural engineer. As per report from the engineer the buildings are categorized. The residents should submit the report to the authorities and accordingly carry out the repair work if they are repairable. Also, if the buildings are dangerous and cannot be repaired, the tenants should vacate, as the authorities have made arrangements of accommodation for them at school and halls nearby. Similarly, if they are dilapidated, the authorities will take action by demolishing the structure," added Badane.
And if the structural reports are delayed, the authorities will take action against them," Badane said.
