Ulhasnagar police arrested two motorcycle thieves on Friday near near Sai Baba mandir on the border of Ulhasnagar-Ambarnath. One of the thieves jumped into the Waldhuni river in Ulhasnagar to avoid getting caught by the people following him, police said.
The locals caught hold of him and handed over to the central police station who are further investigating the matter.
According to sources, the two accused were riding the stolen motorcycle. The owner whose motorcycle was robbed was following them on another motorcycle accompanied by his friend.
"The two thieves slipped and fell down near Sai Baba mandir. The two left the motorcycle there and started running. A group of youngsters from the locality started chasing them after they found out about the theft. While one was caught the other jumped into the river near Vadole village," said a police officer.
A local, Sagar Bhingardive, along with his friends, jumped into the river and caught the accused who was swimming to reach the other side. He was further handed over to the central police station.
S. Suradkar, Senior Police Inspector, Central police station, confirmed about the incident and said, "The accused have been arrested and further investigation is on".
