Even now, people are leaving Mumbai and MMR owing to continuation of lockdown. As per figures, the Central and Western Railways operated 79% of the total special trains between April till now are plying people out of the city. During this period, the Indian Railways ran 443 trains, completing 1,400 trips across the country.
In this second wave, many shifted across the country and some even went back to their hometown. The movement of people out of the city and its metropolitan region still continues even though the cases are under control in many states.
To clear the additional rush, the Central Railway ran 197 trains, completing 690 trips. On the other hand, the Western Railway operated 154 trains that made 465 trips between April to June. These trains mainly departed to Kolkata, Gorakhpur, Patna, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Varanasi, Guwahati, Lucknow, Ranchi, Prayagraj, Muzaffarpur among other cities.
Suneet Sharma, chairman and CEO of the railway board, said, “There has been a requirement for people and labourers to travel. We have been running 809 express trains daily. Wherever there is a need, we also operate clone trains. We will continue to run trains as per the demand.”
From April 12 to 30 the Indian Railways ran 145 additional trains and 142 trains from Mumbai. They are also running 2,891 suburban trains across the country, including those in Mumbai. They are operating 26 clone trains on routes that are highly patronized by passengers and 403 passenger services are also operated.
