Mumbai: Lepto cases will rise in coming days, say Doctors

Civic officials and doctors have advised those who got drenched in Wednesday’s rain or waded through waterlogged streets to watch out for fever or flu-like symptoms and seek medical help immediately. Following which Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued an advisory on leptospirosis and have also warned that the cases of leptospirosis will increase. Civic officials said that if people have waded through water, they should start preventive treatment or see a doctor as soon as symptoms like fever appear.

Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner, said people with a history of wading through flood water should consult a doctor for prophylactic treatment of Leptospirosis within 72 hours. “All the private practitioners are hereby requested to start doxycycline to all fever patients during monsoon season as early treatment with doxycycline prevents organ involvement and other complications thereby preventing deaths due to leptospirosis,” he said.

Senior health official said that people are more likely to get infected with leptospirosis if they travel, wade through waterlogged roads or walk without wearing gumboots. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread through the urine of infected animals. Individuals, exposed to such waters, are more likely to be infected with leptospirosis.

“We urged citizens to consult doctors if they have walked through stagnant or flowing water during heavy rains as such waters contain leptospirosis, a bacterium called leptospira. If a person comes in contact with such contaminated water, he is more likely to be infected with leptospirosis," said a health officer from the civic health department.

Health experts said people are requested not to ignore fever and desist from self-medication. If they have symptoms like fever with chills, joint pains, rashes, cough, breathlessness, diarrhoea, vomiting, sore throat or jaundice, then they should immediately visit a nearby dispensary or inform the community health volunteer or consult their doctors.
