The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), witnessed steady surge in cargo handling in May month despite the various challenges faced during the past few months due to Covid-19. During the month, JNPT handled a noteworthy 4,54,385 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit), as against 2,74,755 TEUs handled in the same period during the previous year, recording a growth of 65.38 per cent.
In rail operations the port handled 86,452 TEUS of ICD traffic from 551 rakes in May, 2021 and the Rail-Coefficient is 19.03 per cent.
Also leading the fight against COVID-19, JNPT handled a total 327.632 MT of liquid medical oxygen and medical accessories in May.
Sanjay Sethi, Chairman, JNPT said, "We maintained our good performance in May 2021 and JNPT will continue to contribute towards the endeavor to battle the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic affecting the country. JNPT will continue to extend utmost priority in the handling of oxygen containers and other medical accessories helping the country to overcome this crisis."
In fact, despite the powerful tropical cyclone Tauktae in the Arabian Sea, on May 18, the port handled 28.72 MTs of O2 consignment loaded from UAE & ensured quick clearance of cargo, JNPT official said.
The JNPT at Navi Mumbai is the biggest container handling Port in India. It operates five container terminals: The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT), the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT), the Gateway Terminals India Pvt. Ltd. (GTIPL), Nhava Sheva International Gateway Terminal (NSIGT) and the newly commissioned Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Private Limited (BMCTPL). The Port also has a Shallow Water Berth for general cargo and another Liquid Cargo Terminal.
