Mumbai witnessed heavy rainfall over the last five days between June 8 and June 12, exceeding the normal rainfall target for the month of June. The suburbs has recorded a total of 715.3 mm rainfall in just 13 days, an excess of 589.1 mm against the normal of 126.1 mm.
Rainfall has exceeded the monthly normal of 505.4 mm for the city and is heading for a huge surplus in the remaining days of the month, meteorologists have hinted.
In the first 13 days of June, the Santacruz observatory (that represents Mumbai suburbs) has recorded 715.3 mm of rainfall against the monthly normal rainfall of 505.0 mm for June. At Colaba observatory, (that represents south Mumbai) 361.0 mm of cumulative rainfall has been recorded during the same period as against the average monthly rainfall of 540.9 mm for the month.
This year, the city may overtake its all-time high June record of 1106.7mm, which was in 2015. Also, 4 digit monthly rainfall of 1029.8mm was achieved in 2012.
"With the active meteorological conditions hinting at vigorous monsoon rains, these records could go for a toss very soon," predicted Skymet Weather, a private weather agency.
Meanwhile, rains over Mumbai and adjoining areas have taken a breather on Sunday and were generally light since Saturday evening. Moderate rains with a few heavy spells are expected over Mumbai with Thurdershowers and heavy rainfall is likely in a few isolated areas in the next 24 to 48 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department has predicted.
According to Meteorologists and weather enthusiasts, low pressure over the Bay of Bengal has moved partly overland covering parts of Odisha and West Bengal. It is likely to move further over Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Consequentially the western arm of the monsoon over the Arabian Sea will pick up strength and throng the Konkan coast including Mumbai, once again.
"It rained heavily over most parts of Konkan excluding Mumbai, in the past 24 hours ending Sunday morning. Ratnagiri received 150mm rainfall in 24 hours ending 8.30 am Sunday.
"Cyclonic circulation earlier persisting over the Arabian Sea off the Konkan coast has weakened. However, an east-west trough still is marked across Konkan, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and the centre of low pressure. Low pressure is expected to become more marked and westerly streams along the west coast will pick up strength. Monsoon rains will accentuate again in general over Konkan and Mumbai in particular. South Konkan and Goa are heading for extremely heavy rains over the next 3-4 days. Mumbai, Thane, Alibag, and Palghar also will have intense rains over the next 2-3 days," predicted Skymet.
Meanwhile, K S Hosalikar, Scientist, Head SID, Climate Research & Services, Pune, India Meteorological Department said: "Very heavy rainfall could remain confined to parts south Konkan, Goa and N Karnataka coast during 48 hours North Konkan (which includes Mumbai, Thane) may receive moderate to heavy on both Sunday and Monday.
