The Bombay High Court bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Girish Kulkarni on Wednesday ordered the Maharashtra government to create awareness among rural citizens and even educate them about the importance of vaccination. The HC has also asked the authorities to ensure that citizens in rural areas don't deny vaccines for want of registration facilities.
The bench was hearing with a clutch of petitions raising concerns over the vaccination drive being carried out in rural areas.
One of the counsels appearing in a petition argued that in several rural areas there isn't any internet or electricity facility and thus it is difficult for citizens there to register for the jabs. She further said that citizens in rural areas had their own reservations about the vaccine and were thus not coming up for taking the jabs.
Having heard this, the judges ordered the authorities to create more awareness about the vaccine and educate the citizens of the importance of the dose. The bench further said that the authorities must pass out a message to the rural citizens that the vaccine is safe.
"Use all your resources to create awareness among the rural citizens," the judges told the state.
The bench was further informed that the state isn't giving priority to citizens in the age group of 18 to 45 years, with co-morbodities.
"Citizens with co-morbodities in the age group of 60 years and above were given priority in the vaccination drive. But similar relief isn't being given to such citizens between the age group of 18 to 45 and under 60 years," a counsel told the bench.
The judges accordingly ordered the state to look into these issues too and adjourned the matter till next week.
