For the first time since the pandemic broke out last year, the doubling rate in a single municipal ward has crossed the 1,000 day mark in Mumbai.
The C ward of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which covers the Mumbadevi, Bhuleshwar, Kalbadevi and Pydhonie areas, presently has a doubling rate of 1,114 days. Earlier, during the first week of May, C ward had a doubling period of only 104 days and recorded 45-60 cases regularly. Alongside these, it had a growth rate of 0.67 percent. However in the past one month, the figures state that the infection rate of this ward has witnessed a steady decline.
In the last seven days, C ward has reported cases in single digits and have reported only 29 cases in total. The growth rate of C ward is 0.06 percent, which is the lowest of the 24 municipal wards and lower than the average growth rate of the city.
Senior BMC officials, in-charge of this ward, have said that it's only by following the set up guidelines they were able to control the growth rate.
"Since the pandemic has started, we have been following the basic guidelines in a disciplined manner. Our staffers are on the field regularly to keep a check on whether Covid appropriate protocols are being followed everywhere and distancing policies are being maintained. We have been reaching out to people to spread awareness, by this way the C ward has had lower infection rate compared to other municipal wards, since past one year now," said Chakrapani Alle, assistant municipal commissioner and in-charge of C ward.
The C ward covers areas like Kalbadevi and Mumbadevi are known as prominent business districts of south Mumbai. These places usually record a heavy floating population every day. Alle said the fact that there is lockdown and restrictions are being imposed has cut down the influx of floating population since one month now which has also helped in containing the spread.
"For more than a month now, most of the commercial establishments have been shut and due to ongoing restrictions and suspension of local train services the mobility of people has also reduced. We can attribute the steady decline in number of cases with these factors as well," Alle said.
Civic officials also maintained that compared to the population density, more vaccination centres have been started in C ward.
"As per the population density, we could have done well with three vaccination centres in our ward, but now we are running as many as six vaccination booths, which is helping us vaccinate more people at a time," said Alle.
Apart from C ward four more wards are expected to cross the 1,000 day doubling rate mark by this month. The wards B ward (Sandhurst Road and Dongri) has a doubling period of 745 days followed by N ward (Ghatkopar) with 733 days, M west ward (Chembur) with 723 days and G north (Mahim, Dharavi and Dadar) which has 701 days.
