The city crime branch arrested a 47-year-old doctor for allegedly facilitating illegal adoption. The doctor, identified as Zikarulla Azami, has been arrested three years after the alleged adoption took place in his clinic in Govandi. The crime branch will soon arrest the father of the boy, who is now 3.5 years old.
According to the crime branch officials, the alleged illegal adoption was conducted in the first week of January, 2018, when a woman (name withheld) was admitted in the Bombay City Hospital in Govandi on the pretext of delivery. Later, the documents purportedly showing the woman had delivered a boy at the hospital were produced before the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) office to procure a birth certificate.
The case came to light when the office of city police commissioner received an anonymous letter informing them about illegal adoption by Jangam. The letter was sent to crime branch unit 7 for further investigation. Crime branch officials conducted thorough investigation and found that the child was originally from Rajasthan and was later 'adopted' by the Jangam illegally.
In the first week of June, the crime branch booked the Azami and Jangam for forging papers to facilitate illegal adoption. According to the crime branch officials, Azami and Jangam knew each other well and Azami helped them as a friend and claimed that he did not receive any monetary benefits. The crime branch is verifying his claims.
The investigation also revealed that the child was born in a hospital in Bikaner, Rajasthan. The crime branch team will soon leave for Bikaner in search of his biological parents.
