The Central Railway (CR) has been carrying out intensive drives to curb ticketless travel inside local and long distance trains. The Mumbai division of the CR conducted intensive drives to ensure that only bonafide passengers travel in trains, following Covid protocol. In May, the CR authorities had detected 54,000 cases of ticketless travel, from which an amount of Rs 3.33 crore was collected as penalty.
These included 32,000 cases in the suburban section, yielding Rs 1.65 crore and 22,000 cases in the non-suburban section, from which Rs 1.68 crore was collected in fines. “Between April 1 to May 31, a total of 1.50 lakh cases of ticketless travellers were detected in long distance and suburban trains, from which an amount of Rs 9.50 crore was collected as penalty,” said Shivaji Sutar, chief PRO, CR.
Besides, special teams of ticket checking personnel detected 1,269 cases where people were found not wearing a mask. An amount of Rs 2.41 lakh was collected as fine during from April 17 to June 2 from those not wearing a mask. The ticket checking staff also detected 2,018 cases of unauthorized travel, violating the Disaster Management Act. Through this, Rs 10.09 lakh was collected in fines between April 28 to May 31.
