Finally, an agreement was reached between the ruling allies -Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)- over the handing over of 100 flats in Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) buildings to Tata Cancer Hospital to provide temporary accommodation to cancer patients and their relatives. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on Tuesday, had stayed the transfer after the Shiv Sena Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ajay Chaudhary informed about the objections raised by residents.

Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad told the Free Press Journal, “Nearly 100 MHADA flats from the Haji Kasam chawl redevelopment project were earmarked for cancer patients. However, the CM asked me to find an alternative after Shiv Sena MLA Ajay Chaudhary brought to his notice the complaints raised by nearby residents. The Housing Department and MHADA today identified buildings redeveloped at Bombay Dyeing mill. 100 flats will now be handed over to Tata Cancer Hospital.” He said the issue has been resolved amicably.

Notably, Awhad had taken the decision to allot 100 flats in MHADA buildings to the hospital. The keys of the flats were handed over to the hospital authorities in May by NCP president Sharad Pawar. ”My repeated pleas to the Housing Minister to hear the grievances of the locals went unheard. So, I had to speak to the chief minister,” Chaudhary. He added that MHADA can allot an entire building to the hospital, so that it is easy for the hospital authorities to maintain it.

But, the decision to allot flats for temporary accommodation in different buildings where people are already staying was not acceptable to locals, he said.
