Project Mumbai, a city NGO gifted four oxygen concentrators for the inmates in the Arthur Road jail. Project Mumbai, which was working at Arthur Road jail for the first time. The NGO arranged doctors, nurses and data entry operators and vaccinated 169 prisoners, all aged 45 and above
The oxygen concentrators were donated by project Mumbai who had donated around 200 such oxygen concentrators across the state. Shishir Joshi, the founder and CEO of Project Mumbai who have been helping citizens in medical facilities said, "We found inmates who were testing positive for covid-19 inside the jail. In a medical emergency, the need for an oxygen concentrator can't be neglected. So, to equip the jail with medical facilities, we donated the medical equipment,".
Authorities from the jail had requested the BMC to speed up the vaccination for 18-44 year-old inmates.
"The arthur road jail at present had 2800 inmates. Till date 413 inmates above 45 years have been vaccinated. We request the authorities to start vaccination for 18 to 44 year-old inmates. The remaining 2400 inmates who are yet to be vaccinated are in the age group of 18 to 44 years. Vaccinating them is our priority. The jail houses a capacity of 804 inmates and it's already overcrowded more than three times the capacity. Vaccinating the inmates will make it safer to stay inside and save them from the spread of virus," an official said.
Arthur Road jail is a British era prison built in 1925. Though its official capacity is 804 prisoners, it houses 2,800 inmates. The jail houses 540 hardened inmates, arrested under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA), 400 inmates accused in murder cases, 80 facing terror charges and 138 foreigners.
