Corona cases continue to dip in Maharashtra

Mumbai: Maharashtra reported a dip in cases and deaths on Sunday, with 9,060 new infections and 150 fatalities, pushing the tally to 15,95,381, with 42,115 deaths till now. The recovery rate of the state has increased to 86 per cent, with 11,204 being recovered and discharged in the last 24 hours, increasing the count to 13,69,810 so far.

Meanwhile, for the fifth consecutive day, the number of Covid-19 cases in Mumbai showed a dip with 1,600 fresh patients, increasing the total count to 2,41,939. The Covid-19 death toll has now increased to 9,730, with 48 fatalities being reported in the last 24 hours.

Of the total deaths, 59 were reported in Mumbai Metropolitan Region, followed by 24 in Pune, 19 in Nagpur, 14 in Latur, 12 in Kolhapur, 10 in Aurangabad, nine in Nashik and two in Akola, while one death was from another state.

Most hospitals, both public and private, said the patient load has been dropping. BMC-run KEM Hospital dean Dr Hemant Deshmukh said the number of Covid-19 inpatients was 200 on an average until a week back. “Now, we have around 150 patients and the criticality among patients is dropping. We have certain zero-death days as well,” said Dr Deshmukh.

Dr Shashank Joshi, one of the members of the state-appointed task force for the clinical management of Covid-19 patients, said the cases in Mumbai are likely to increase in the next couple of weeks. “Across India and in Maharashtra there is a clear-cut decline in cases. But the unlocking coinciding with winter setting in, the unseasonal climatic changes, rise in pollution, could result in a spike in cases. The Covid-appropriate behaviour of citizens and not letting down the guard will help us in maintaining the downward trend. Next six weeks are very crucial,” he said.

So far, a total of 81.39 lakh tests have been conducted in the state, of which nearly 20 per cent were positive. There are 24.12 lakh people, in-home quarantine and over 23,384 in institutional quarantine.
