Mumbai: Delhi University associate professor Hany Babu was on Friday remanded in judicial custody by a special NIA court after his custody with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) ended. The agency did not seek his further custody for interrogation.
The 54-year-old was arrested on the evening of July 28 and has been in the NIA’s custody for investigation since the next day, when he was produced before the court.
Seeking his further custody for seven days after his first custody ended on Aug 4, the agency had told the court that it had found some incriminating material during a raid on his home in Noida and needed to confront him with these.
Babu’s advocate Susan Abraham along with Nilesh Ukey had argued against further custody as they said he was already under questioning since four days prior to arrest.
The court had granted custody for only three days to the agency, instead of seven, finding the plea for seven days custody unacceptable.
On Friday, they appeared for him with advocate R Sathyanarayan. Babu was the 12th public intellectual to have been arrested in the case.
The agency has accused him of Maoist links, supporting Naxalite movements and involvement in the release of Delhi University professor GN Saibaba who was convicted in 2017 for Maoist links by a Gadchiroli court.
Others in custody in the case include journalist Gautam Navlakha, Dalit rights activist Anand Teltumbde, professor Shoma Sen, civil liberties activist Sudha Bharadwaj, human rights advocate Arun Ferreira and revolutionary poet Varavara Rao.
