Hurt by allegation of not upholding propriety: CM Kamal Nath writes to Governor Lalji Tandon

BHOPAL: Chief Minister Kamal Nath has expressed unhappiness by writing a fresh letter to Governor Lalji Tandon in which he has said that he is deeply hurt by the allegation that he has not upheld parliamentary propriety.

“In my 40 years of political life I have always followed rules. But after reading your letter of March 16, I am sad. You have alleged that I have not followed the parliamentary rules. I had no intent to hurt you. But if you have felt so, I apologise,” the chief minister wrote to the governor.

On Monday, Governor Lalji Tandon has shot off a letter questioning CM and government’s intention. The governor had also asked him to conduct the floor test on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the CM replied in reference to Monday’s letter. The CM wrote that the Assembly was adjourned till March 26, due to the threat of coronavirus as the WHO had declared it a pandemic.

"I bring to your notice that in the last 15 months I have proved majority in the House several times. If you think that I don't enjoy majority, the opposition can bring a no-confidence motion. It has come to my knowledge that the BJP has moved the motion which is pending before the Speaker who will take appropriate action as per the rules of the House," Nath said in the letter.

He also appealed to the Governor to call back the Congress MLAs held 'captive' in Bengaluru.

"I have apprised you of unprecedented situation in the state repeatedly. At least 16 of our legislators have been kept in a hotel in Bengaluru in a captive like situation. It is the BJP leaders who took them there by a chartered flight. No one can talk to them. They are being prevented from coming to Bhopal. They are given bribes, lurements and are being pressured by the BJP and forced to give false statements before the media. I am attaching a copy by a kin of the 'captive' MLA who has complained to us," Nath said in the letter.

Nath also said with ‘utter sadness’ and ‘anguish’ that far from finding a solution to the “illegal conduct like restrictions on my MLAs,” the Governor has not even mentioned it in his letter.

He also mentioned the issue of 16 Congress MLAs allegedly captivated in Bangaluru, by the BJP leaders. He stated that these 16 shall be brought to state and shall give them free environment at their home, so that they can think independently.

The CM said, "Keeping into account all facts, I have forwarded your direction to me to the Assembly Speaker for an appropriate action".

The Governor had asked the government twice to hold a floor test - first on March 14 and then on March 16. However, the government has refused to do so saying first the legislators kept in Bengaluru should be released.
