Indore: DAVV set to go global with four online programmes

Indore

The long-pending dream of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) to have foreign nationals as its students is all set to come true but with a little twist. As of now, foreign nationals won’t be coming to DAVV campus. Rather, the university will reach out to them.

The lone Grade A+ accredited university in the state is all set to go global with four online postgraduate courses, including two MBA programmes.

As it is a Grade A+ accredited university, DAVV has got approval from University Grants Commission (UGC) to offer MBA (HR, Marketing & Finance), MBA (Energy Management), MA (Sociology) and MA (Economics) courses through online mode.

Besides, the coordination committee, the apex body of higher education in the state, has also approved ordinances of the above-mentioned programmes in online mode.

“Now, we can admit students across the world. The students pursuing online programmes won’t have to come to the university campus for attending lectures in offline mode. They can take online classes from wherever they are,” said Prof Pratosh Bansal, director of the Centre for Distance and Online Education at DAVV.

However, Bansal clarified that the students enrolled for online courses will have to go to a designated centre for writing exams. For that university would have to hire a software partner that has a global reach.

“Not only for exams but we require software partner for multiple roles – right from online promotion of programmes to redressal of queries, from student acquisition to preparation of video lectures,” said Bansal. He added that the role of the agency will be only of a service provider.

The university has invited invite bids from agencies on revenue sharing basis for setting up technical, academic and support infrastructure for development, launch and management of online with zero capital expenditure (no upfront cost) by the DAVV.

Foreigners’ passport number for admission

DAVV would seek a unique identification number for admission. Foreigners wishing to pursue online courses offered by DAVV will have to provide their passport numbers. In the case of Indian students, Aadhar number will be accepted for admission.

Major roles of software agency …

---Will do online promotion of DAVV online programmes

--- Will do students acquisition

--- Will prepare video lectures from the content provided by DAVV experts

--- Will make a payment gateway. Fee will be deposited directly in DAVV account

--- Run a call centre 24x7 for clearing students doubts

--- Develop Learning Management System in compliance with UGC Regulations

--Create Internal Assessment Mechanism

--Provide Apprenticeship and Placement Support

-- Provide technical support for Academic Bank of Credit

DAVV clarifies

--Like MP Online, the agency will give a global window for submitting application forms. Admission will be confirmed only by the DAVV as per the Ordinance.

--Unlike MP Online, fees will be deposited in the account of DAVV.

--- Role of the agency shall be only be restricted to providing services

Madhya Pradesh: Smart city's unsmart work triggers troubles for residents

Sagar (Madhya Pradesh): The citizens have begun to put a question mark on the works done by the municipal corporation and the Smart City Limited in the home district of urban development and housing minister Bhupendra Singh Thakur.

The poor quality work has tarnished the image of the minister as well as of the state government, sources said, adding that a few officers need to be bridled.

There are 48 wards in the city. But the residents of Ravishanker, Chameli Chowk, Bill Nagar and Itwari Bazar wards are drinking polluted water.

The commissioner of civic body is, however, beating his own trumpets. Although the minister belongs to this district there is no improvement in the situation. Everything is being done only on paper.

The minister issues instructions to officials to provide clean drinking water, but those orders are not implemented in Sagar district.

They are forced to consume polluted water, because the water pipeline is still connected with drains, the residents said.

The municipal corporation spends crores of rupees on development of the city, but the city is in a bad state.

Many places in the city are strewn with garbage and drains filled with rubbish.

Such places have turned into mosquito-breeding grounds. As a result, many residents are falling ill.

The civic body claims that they are keeping the city clean, and the Swachchta Mission of the Prime Minister is being implemented.

Many roads in the city are littered with rubbish which is spreading various diseases.

The commissioner of the municipal corporation is not doing anything to keep the city clean.

There are many potholes in the roads, which are filled with water. A huge amount of money spent on building and maintaining the roads is going astray.

Because of the potholes, accidents occur daily. The residents demanded an inquiry into the irregularities.

Poor quality construction of drain

A poor quality drain is being constructed outside the office of transport minister Govind Singh Rajput.

According to reports, although there are three ministers who are associated with the city, the agency is doing poor quality work.

Shriji Infrastructure is building a drain outside the office of Rajput. On the one hand the work is going on, but on the other, the drains and ducts are getting damaged.

The duty of a sub-engineer of the Smart City Limited is to check the works done by the company, so that quality of work is maintained.

Sriji Infrastructure which is constructing the drains is using poor quality of iron for making ducts.

The drains and the ducts have been damaged because rusted iron has been used in the ducts.

Sub-engineer Kaushalendra Tomar said that damaged drains and ducts would be reconstructed.

Alok Sharma ‘deeply frustrated’ by India and China over coal

Cop26 president says nations will have to ‘explain to climate-vulnerable countries why they did what they did’

India and China will “have to explain themselves to poor nations” after watering down the Glasgow climate pact, warned the Cop26 president, Alok Sharma, adding that their actions had left him “deeply frustrated”.

He told the Guardian: “We are on the way to consigning coal to history. This is an agreement we can build on. But in the case of China and India, they will have to explain to climate-vulnerable countries why they did what they did.”

Patients are dying from being stuck in ambulances outside A&E, report says

Exclusive: handover delays across England are also causing permanent harm to those needing urgent care

People are dying in the back of ambulances and up to 160,000 more a year are coming to harm because they are stuck outside hospitals unable to be offloaded to A&E, a bombshell report has revealed.

Patients are also dying soon after finally getting admitted to hospital after spending long periods in the back of an ambulance, while others still in their own homes are not being saved because paramedics are trapped at A&E and unable to answer 999 calls, said the report by NHS ambulance service bosses in England.

A patient died after spending about an hour in an ambulance outside Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge on 24 October. The patient had suffered a cardiac arrest. The hospital said the patient had “remained in the ambulance due to significant pressures on A&E”.

John Swinney, Scotland’s deputy first minister, last week apologised for the “agony” endured by the family of Richard Brown, who died on the stairs outside his flat in Glasgow after waiting five hours for an ambulance

A patient died of a cardiac arrest in Worcestershire royal hospital in Worcester on 4 October after waiting five hours in an ambulance outside. Paramedics warned A&E staff the patient was having trouble breathing but the patient died despite being rushed into the resuscitation room.

A woman died in eastern England last month after waiting an hour for an ambulance crew to reach her on what should have been a seven-minute response. No crews were available in the 50 miles between Cromer and Waveney in Norfolk, so an ambulance from Ipswich in Suffolk had to answer the 999 call.

Madhya Pradesh: Congress demands FIR against Kangana

Katni (Madhya Pradesh): The Congress workers held a protest against actor Kangana Ranautís statement on Indiaís independence in the city on Sunday.

After the protest, the party workers and office-bearers reached the police station and demanded a case of sedition against Ranaut.

President of the district Congress Mithilesh Jain said that the British had taken the country into their clutches.

To free the country from the clutches of the British, Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Sardar Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad and others fought for the countryís independence, Jain said.

Thousands of Indians laid down their lives, he said, adding that the 50 years of struggle forced the British to leave the country.

At a function in Delhi, Ranaut said that the country had obtained independence from the British through begging.

Her statement is an offence to those who sacrificed their lives for independence, said Congressís rural committee president, Guman Singh.

The Congress workers appealed to the police to register an FIR against Ranaut and take back the Padmashri Award given to her.

The Congress workers also took out a march from Piprodh village to Padua to raise awareness among people about the rising prices of essential commodities. Jain and Singh led the march and appealed to people to oust the BJP government from the Centre and from the state.

Madhya Pradesh: Tribal woman scripts saga of success through government scheme

Hoshangabad (Madhya Pradesh): The tribal women are scripting their own saga development with the help of the schemes launched by the state government.

Besides being empowered, they are fulfilling the governmentís desire to make the state self-reliant.

One such story is about Manju Bai. She lives in the Bankhedi block of Tindwada village.

The Cottage and Village Industries Department has given her one acre under a self-reliance scheme for planting saplings of mulberry.

Mulberry trees are used to grow silkworm. Manju has strengthened her financial conditions.

According to Manju Bai, as she had no means of income it was difficult for her to feed her family members.

After getting one acre under the governmentís scheme, she has been growing silkworms for 12 years, she said.

Now, she has been earning a good amount of money and feeding her family members.

She further said that the department of silk provided her technical help.

Manju further said that she had grown 334-kg cocoons and earned Rs 1.90 lakh.

Rs 12.92cr distributed to collect crowd: Congress

A sum of Rs 12.92 crore has been distributed among the beneficiaries on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modiís visit to Bhopal.

Vice president of the Youth Congress Arun Dikshit said that the money had been distributed for gathering people at the Prime Minister's rally, which is illegal. On the other hand, the cancellation of the fair of Kartik Poornima held at Bandrabhan is against the religious sentiments of the people.

While the Brandabhan fair has been cancelled because of the corona pandemic nearly 2.50 lakh people are being collected to attend the Prime Ministerís rally, he said, adding that this showed the double standard of the government.

There is every reason for the government to let the Habinganj railway station be inaugurated by the Prime minister, but it should keep away from wasting money.

I'm inspired by taking on unrealistic goals, says CarDekho Amit Jain

AMIT JAIN, CEO and Co-founder of Girnarsoft and CarDekho - the 33rd unicorn to be minted in India in 2021 – talks of his journey guided by deep-rooted emotions around the family, setting up the company with his brother Anurag Jain, grooming simple people into leaders in Jaipur and ambition of scaling up to a $10 billion company

FAMILY IS MY WORLD

I grew up in a close-knit ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’ type of joint family comprising my grandparents, parents and us children, living under one roof in Jaipur. Later, both my brother Anurag Jain and I went to IIT Delhi. We both passed out, found jobs and moved to the United States - I lived in Boston, and he in Dallas. Then I came back to Bangalore to work at Trilogy and Anurag came back too. I was a programmer by profession, and had moved into a product-cum-business role at Trilogy and that’s where I first imbibed the start-up mindset.

In 2006, my father was diagnosed with cancer. Trilogy allowed me to work remotely so I could be with my father in Mumbai where he was getting treated at Tata Memorial. I am thankful that I could be with him till the end. After he passed away, Anurag and I decided to shift to Jaipur to be with our ageing grandparents and mother, but we didn’t know what we would do there. For six months, we tried our hand at my father’s gemstones trading business. It wasn’t easy after a corporate life. You actually had to carry a bag of stones and go shop-to-shop to show the stocks and sell. Naturally, we didn’t enjoy it and decided to get back to IT. That’s when we incorporated a company - Girnarsoft - from our garage. Our ex-bosses and people we knew gave us projects. Our objective was not a start-up, but making both ends meet. However, we did have an ambition – to make it large and possibly a billion-dollar company one day. We didn’t know how to go about it, but we updated our LinkedIn profiles with this goal, and the number drove me significantly through my journey of launching CarDekho and other companies later.

LEARN TO DREAM BIG

CarDekho happened in 2008. We had gone to New Delhi to buy our first BMW at an Auto Expo. We saw a lot of nice cars. Then we searched online for the same cars. We realized that the information we got at the Expo was not available online. That prompted us to start this portal CarDekho. We collected all the brochures from the Expo, stacked them in the boot of our car, and created a site with a friend’s help. CarDekho was based on our own need of trying to find information on cars and not succeeding.

Today, CarDekho is already a unicorn and my ambition is to be a $ 10 billion company. Actually, I'm inspired by taking on unrealistic goals. That’s where the challenge and fun lies. One thing I’ve learnt is to dream big and believe in it. Then your activities, your brain processes, your thinking change. That’s what happened to me. In 2007, there weren’t too many start-ups in India. We started launching start-up after start-up to see where we could achieve scale. Many of them failed too. The good part is that we failed so many times that our foundation is very strong on how not to do things. But we have been persistent - that we want to build something large. If you persevere and believe, then you will always find a solution and a way. We persisted against all odds. We ran the organization unfunded for a good seven years. We managed to be the No.1 portal without any funds raised or a single dollar in marketing spends. With perseverance comes innovation. When you don’t have the money, you find ways to do better with less money. Thus our innovation DNA came alive.

LEADERS FROM JAIPUR

When we started our company, we took in freshers from local colleges who could not get jobs as talent is limited in Jaipur. We hired local engineers and trained them ourselves. The best part is that 50% of the original batch of people we trained are still with us. Those simple people have actually become leaders, making me realize that degrees don’t matter. What matters is the ‘experiences per year’ you gain. For 3-4 years of their lives, those folks practically learnt what a normal IIT grad would learn. They got exposed to situations. One clear I learnt is: ‘Don't measure your experience in years. Measure it in terms of experiences per year.’ So, you can easily spend five years to learn 25 years’ worth of experiences. My goal and endeavour till date has been how can I learn more every year and gain three to five years of experience further to my age every year. That will make me more accomplished. And that's what happens in start-ups. In fact, to any fresh grad I say, ‘Don’t be a small fish in a big pond. Be big fish in a small pond. You learn a lot there.’ In a small company, the impact you create, how you grow in your thinking and competencies are much faster than in very large companies where you could get lost in the crowd.

Another factor that built our company is loyalty of the team. In a small town, the culture is that people are friendlier and family-oriented. I still call Girnar my family, not my company.

Now of course, we recruit pan-India. We have a larger office in Gurugram with more talent being attracted there. But I am still based in Jaipur. I like this city. I keep travelling to Gurugram, but run the company from here.

GOALS FOR CARDEKHO

Right now, we are very focused on setting up our used car business and creating a trustworthy brand for our consumers. When you buy a car from a dealer, there are a lot of ambiguities. Was the car in an accident. Was the meter tampered with? Will I be faced with a huge expense after buying it? Will I be able to return the car if it's not good? Things like these are unanswered in India today. So we are trying to work from the consumer’s side to deliver quality cars with a promise that you won't incur any significant expense for one year if you buy from us. You can return it in seven days if you don't like the car. If anything goes bad, you can bring it back and we’ll repair it free of cost. Much like a manufacturer does. Our mission is to become an OEM of used cars. While we do so, we're also trying to establish an ecosystem of finance and insurance. We are setting up instant lending from an NBFC on used car loans. That’ll be our second focus. We are also going to set up an insurance claim centre.

Plans are for international expansion with a similar model. We are already present in Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia in the new car and used car lending business. We have not yet entered the used car buying-selling business yet. But that will be on the cards.

Box

‘I GIVE MY KIDS TIME’

Outside of work, I like to spend time with my kids. I teach them sometimes, play football with them. My father gave me a lot of time when I was growing up. I try to give my kids as much time as I can. I like watching a series on Netflix or something with my wife on weekends, or play tennis or cricket. I like to party hard too. My theme is work hard, party hard.

On USP of CarDekho in the industry

We are an ecosystem player. We are into new cars, used cars, insurance, finance and now we're getting into refurbishment. We are a platform player. In insurance and finance, we control 9% of the used car lending market in India, and 2.5% of Indian auto market insurance. Our game-play is very varied. We recognize that a person buying a car takes finance and insurance. He also sells his car after four years. If you can repeat customers based on your services, that’s when you get something called lifetime value of a customer.

On the current market for EVs

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are the future of this industry. They will first disrupt the two-wheelers and then the four-wheeler segment. Right now, battery cost is very high for an entry level car to make it a practical buy. As in the case of mobile phones, the EV industry too is going to evolve in terms of charging time, range and price. Cost of batteries has already reduced to one-third in the last 4-5 years, thanks perhaps to economies of scale. Over the next 5-10 years, charging stations will be omni-present. We will see a significant EV ecosystem and double-digit market-share for electric cars and bikes as they become affordable and people buy them.

On new vehicle scrappage policy

The Government’s recent vehicle scrappage policy restricting use of commercial vehicles older than 10 years and private vehicles older than 15 years in metros is a good policy because it will increase new automobile sales. What it will mean practically, is that cars from metros will go to smaller towns. India is at a very low car penetration today. Roughly, it’s about 27 cars per 1,000 people vis-à-vis 800 cars per 1,000 people in the US and 200 cars per 1,000 people in China. This policy will force car prices to come down significantly as cars will become scrap after 10-15 years. Value of a car will drop so much that it’ll become very affordable for people in smaller towns, thereby increasing car penetration in Tier II and Tier III cities. Overall, it will benefit the automobile ecosystem significantly.

On CarDekho’s upcoming IPO launch

We are planning an IPO 18 months from now. A successful IPO is what we expect. I don’t think too much beyond building a good and trustworthy company.

On keeping up with the times

I have a very competent team and I learn from my team the most. A good peer group helps you get more educated than anybody else. Besides, I do a lot of reading around other companies, trends, how EVs are performing in other countries, how things are getting disrupted. What’s China doing in used cars? What’s the US doing in used cars? What is similar or different from India?

On his life mantra

Be happy with whatever you get. I am always a content guy, a happy guy. Competition doesn’t bother me. I am competing with myself to be better rather than competing outside.

Advertising today: Flipping burgers or gourmet meals?

Long term brand-building effort is a misnomer, it cannot even be planned

What we cannot discount at all today is that social media has redefined the way brands communicate with consumers. Advertising is built on stimulus-response theory; every stimulus generates a response and consistent response builds a behaviour that makes brands profitable. In the long run. Almost like a gourmet meal - it takes time to make, it drives a unique experience which in turn drives memories.

For a long time, advertising was like preparing a gourmet meal. It was painstaking to create, it needed precise preparation, it needed a lot of testing and realigning, it needed many hands with specific skills to create communication that moved heart and mind. Hands and feet moved as commanded by heart and mind. This has changed, and the change is driven by social media. Brands no longer look to serve a gourmet meal, they strive to serve quick-fix burgers.

FAST, CHEAP AND VIRAL

Fast, cheap and viral (I have borrowed from the book title that I don’t agree with) is a mantra that brands today live by. Social media is all about quick stimulus and often not about consistent response. It is a moving target where brands do not look at building a focused feeling and speed determines the action brands will undertake.

This makes all the brands feel that creating communication that will move heart and mind is fast, cheap and simple. This is added by brands hiring creative teams internally with the sole reason of speed.

Yes, functionally both gourmet meal and fast food satiate hunger, and maybe satiate it for almost the same time. But that’s where the comparison between the two ends. This quest for fast has changed the landscape for brands and I do see this trend becoming stronger. More and more brands are already doing this.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN

That being the case, here is what I think can happen in the coming months:

One: The proposition to brand connect need not be there at all. This is the place where advertising skills are most needed, but this is also the bit that slows the creative process. There are some big brands like banks and fintech, that have already given up on this aspect.

Two: Memorability is a fleeting thing. If the advertising is remembered only till the time you tweet, it would be supremely successful. In an attention deficit economy, memorability does not create any competitive advantage.

Three: Immediate action matters. All advertising should do is drive the audience to either search or download the app. If either doesn’t happen, then the advertising has been a spectacular failure.

Four: And finally, long term brand-building effort is a misnomer, because the business itself may pivot in the next two quarters. So building a long-term impact is not something that can even be planned.

Advertising these days is a lot more about what it does right now, and that is a scary challenge.

The Guardian view on the Cop26 agreement: unfinished business | Editorial

The best thing about the Glasgow agreement is the chance it offers for tougher emissions cuts next year

The anti-global heating movement is not strong enough. With last year’s defeat of Donald Trump, its enemies lost their most powerful figurehead. But the governments of Australia, Brazil, Russia and Saudi Arabia continue to obstruct progress and at Cop26, yet again, they and the other backers of the fossil fuel-powered status quo outgunned supporters of the immediate decarbonisation that is needed, if the goal of limiting temperature rises to 1.5C is to stay within reach. Now the Glasgow conference is over, the most important question for all those seeking to avoid and reduce climate harms is how to speed up the transition.

Ramping up the pressure on polluters – both nations and companies – is the obvious answer. Questions surrounding tactics remain fraught, as the recent debate over protests by Insulate Britain illustrates. But there is no question that civil society has a vital role to play. If people, in a few years’ time, are to look back on Cop26 as a success, it will be because the Glasgow agreement created the mechanism whereby countries must revisit their emissions-cutting pledges every year, and the political conditions changed sufficiently to ensure that existing promises were strengthened.

The Guardian view on Bosnia and Herzegovina: past time to take a stand | Editorial

Serb separatist provocations must not be tolerated – and the people must be offered hope of something better

Better late than never? The US and Europe finally show signs of awakening to the dangers facing Bosnia. A crisis with long roots has escalated dramatically, with the international community’s chief representative, Christian Schmidt, warning that the country could soon break apart. He described a “very real” prospect of a return to conflict, 26 years after the Dayton peace accords ended a war that cost 100,000 lives, and the Srebrenica massacre of Muslim men and boys that was the worst atrocity in Europe since the second world war.

Since then, Bosnia has been made up of the Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosniaks and Croats, with a tripartite presidency composed of one Serb, one Bosniak and one Croat. Milorad Dodik, the genocide-denying leader of the Bosnian Serbs, has pressed for years for them to go their own way. The limited international pushback has emboldened him. In response to the introduction of a genocide denial law by the previous high representative, Mr Dodik is threatening to quit state institutions – including the national armed forces. This would be, as Mr Schmidt noted, secession in all but name. In creating a new Bosnian Serb army, it would also revive the very body responsible for genocide. Mr Dodik has said he would force Bosnian troops out of the Republika Srpska and that, if necessary, his “friends” would back him.

Effie Awards India 2021: For effective brand communications, ROI means return on ideas

PARTHA SINHA, President of The Advertising Club and MITRAJIT BHATTACHARYA, Chairperson of Effie Awards India 2021, decode the ‘effectiveness’ quotient of marketing communications in pandemic year

When the Advertising Club hosted the Effie Awards India 2021 in a virtual ceremony recently, it was not just a celebration of the best work by agencies and clients with ‘effectiveness’ at the core of their marketing and advertising communication, it was also a triumph of the human spirit in pandemic year. With the Ad Club receiving a record 950 entries and participation of 51 agencies, it was encouraging to see a stellar quality of work created by agencies despite the odds.

Says Partha Sinha, President of the Advertising Club, “Like every year, this year also the Effies celebrated great thinking and execution. But for me what stood out this year was that the brands behaved in a much more socially integrated manner. A major part of this year’s date eligibility fell in the COVID period. There were enough and more examples of how brands were helping people navigate through this difficult time. In the most difficult period of recent human history, the brands became human. This was the most encouraging aspect for me. Who says brand marketing is cold and commercial? A lot of brands showed a lot of heart during this period and were suitably rewarded for it.”

Rising to the challenge

Mitrajit Bhattacharya, Chairperson of the Ad Club’s Effies, who has been involved with the Effie India Awards for four years now, says hosting the Effies this year was a very different challenge. “We were first concerned whether there would be enough work considering the country was under lockdown for most parts of 2020 and even during the deadly second wave that hit us in 2021. We were pleasantly surprised with the numbers finally - 950 entries are a record in the history of Effies in India,” he adds.

Hosting a virtual event was a first in the history of Effies India. The entire jury process was conducted online, with 520 judges judging close to 50 categories of awards that included the Grand Effie. Pointing out the highlights, Bhattacharya says, “What stood out for me are: 1. Consistency of McCann in winning the agency of the year, fourth time in a row. 2. Ability of Ogilvy to churn out good quality work and consistently winning the coveted Grand Effie. They have four golds that included a Grand Effie this year. 3. Glorious return of Lowe after a gap of two years. Their performance has been exemplary, winning five golds and nine silvers this year. 4. Continued dominance of HUL as the client of the year. The sheer quality of work across brands is unbeatable, quite literally. 5. Mondelez's steady rise to the second position (with just a gap of 8 points with HUL at the top and more than a 40 points gap with the third position).”

The effectiveness goalpost

Listing some ‘effectiveness’ insights gleaned over years of observing transformative marketing campaigns, Sinha says, “Some of the fundamentals of effectiveness would be - Big brand thinking is not about finding a marketing solution to a marketing problem but finding a human solution to a marketing problem. Effectiveness is not efficiency – it’s much bigger than that. It’s never about doing the things rightly but doing the right thing. Effective communication never focuses on the output but on the outcome. ROI for effective brand communications don’t stand for return on investment but return on ideas.”

Reiterating that Effie rewards ‘work that works in the marketplace’, Bhattacharya says, “Brands and agencies have made ‘effectiveness’ their goalpost. And that’s the only purpose of any good campaign. Effie Awards link objective to execution to results of campaigns in a structured manner with the highest weightage given to results. In the past few years, the agencies have started writing cases better, sharper and more focused. Presenting a case well is as important as a good campaign in winning an Effie award.”

Growing the movement

While the Ad Club’s Effie Committee is planning smaller workshops across Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru to take the culture of effectiveness forward, it is also partnering with key agencies across the three cities to host these events where creators of some of the winning campaigns from Effies 2021 will share insights with young agency practitioners. “We are working out the modalities,” says Bhattacharya.

“For the Ad Club, Effie is no longer a month of contest and a night of celebration. We want to foster a culture of effectiveness across the entire ecosystem – agencies, clients and media. One of the key steps for that would be to get the younger people involved. The objective of our upcoming workshops is to get seasoned professionals to interact with the youngsters about the changing dynamics of effective brand comms. Three large agencies have agreed to host them,” explains Sinha.

Rating India’s performance at the Effies at the APAC and global levels over the years, Sinha says, “India has always performed very well in the global stage as far as effective work is concerned. Indian brands have won the Grand Prix, been the numero uno agency globally and so on. The most important reason for that I find advertising and marketing in India to be a lot more mainstream than many other countries. Advertising is still a significant part of popular culture in India.”

Mumbai: Central Railway recovers ₹108 crore in fines in 7 months

The Central Railway (CR) has collected Rs 108.82 crore in fines by catching 17.22 lakh ticketless travellers across five divisions in the last seven months. Out of these, 6.83 lakh passengers were detected in the CR’s Mumbai division alone.

As per data from the five divisions, over 23,816 passengers were caught maskless, and 5,203 were caught violating the Covid-19 norms between April 1, 2021, and November 6, 2021. A total fine of Rs.39.68 lakh and Rs.26.02 lakh was collected from them.

“The Bhusaval division recorded 4.68 lakh cases, Nagpur division saw 2.51 lakh cases and Solapur, Pune divisions registered 3.2 lakh cases,” said a CR official.

He added that the Bhusaval division registered a record revenue of Rs. 33.74 crore, followed by the Mumbai division with Rs 33.2 crore. They were followed by the Nagpur division with Rs. 16.73 crore and Rs 17.15 crore by Solapur, Pune divisions and Headquarters special teams.

Till November 2020, over 1.4 lakh passengers and a fine of Rs 5.4 crore were collected from them. The fall in numbers was due to a nationwide lockdown.

While in 2019, close to 27.21 lakh people were caught, and Rs 142.94 crore was collected as a fine.

The sudden spike in the recovery is attributed to sustained special drives conducted across five railway zones in the last seven months, which saw record revenue of Rs.100.82 crore collected from 17.22 lakh passengers.

“Central Railway in its endeavour to provide better services to bonafide rail users and also to curb ticketless travel, is regularly conducting intensive campaigns against ticketless and irregular travel in suburban and non-suburban/Mail Express special trains under Government guidelines and following Covid-19 appropriate behaviour,” said chief PRO of Central Railway, Shivaji Sutar.

The CR has appealed to the passengers to travel with proper and valid railway tickets to avoid any inconvenience.

Waste dumped along the railway tracks has slowed down trains at several locations in MMR

Garbage spilling over onto the railway tracks not only spreads ailments, it also slows down the trains. Incredible but true. Officials from the Central Railway (CR) said that piles of garbage have restricted the local trains’ speed limit at a few locations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). For instance, the speed limit for trains on the sixth line between Kurla and Thane is nearly 100 kmph, but trains slow down to 30kmph between Vikhroli and Kanjur Marg due to slush and garbage on the tracks.

Similarly, trains are not able to run full speed on the Thane-Airoli section of the TransHarbour line and along the Trombay- Kurla section of the goods line because of slush. Even between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli, speed is being restricted at several spots due to waste being dumped onto the tracks from around a dozen slum colonies.

“There is a risk factor due to tracks being covered with slush and other waste. Garbage causes corrosion and reduced lifespan of the railway tracks,” a CR official said.

A member of the railway workers’ union said that workers repairing tracks often have to bear the brunt of the garbage. “Workers are often forced to operate amid unbearable stench. Garbage and slush on tracks cause health issues to the workers,” he said.

Slum-dwellers say they empathise with railway workers, but lack of toilets in slum colonies force them to defecate along the tracks. “We have zero options,” said Mohammed Nazir, who resides in the slums located along the tracks between Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli. “It’s a decades old problem but no authority is paying attention to our needs,” he said.

Vikram Gokhale backs Kangana Ranaut's 'bheek' remark, says 'leaders never saved freedom fighters during British Raj'

Veteran Marathi actor Vikram Gokhale has come out in emphatic support of Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, who had recently remarked that India had merely received ‘bheekh’ (alms) in 1947 and the country got real freedom only in 2014, when Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister.

Speaking at a function here in Maharashtra on Sunday, Gokhale said what Ranaut had said was true.

“I agree with Ranaut’s statement. We were given freedom. Many people were just mute spectators when freedom fighters were hanged (during the British raj). These mute spectators included many senior leaders. They didn’t save the freedom fighters who were fighting against the British,” said Gokhale, who is known for his roles in Marathi theatre, Bollywood and television.

Gokhale said that every political party, including the BJP, tries to derive benefit from controversies.

Replying to a query on the purported communal violence in Tripura and its echo in Amravati and other cities in Maharashtra where incidents of stone-pelting had taken place, the actor said communal riots were a result of vote bank politics. “Every political party plays that (vote bank politics),” he claimed.

Speaking on the political scenario in Maharashtra, Gokhale said former allies Shiv Sena and BJP should come together again for the betterment of the country.

“BJP and Shiv Sena should come together again. I had questioned (opposition leader and former Maharashtra chief minister) Devendra Fadnavis about the possible alliance between the two parties on the condition of sharing the post of CM for an equal number of years. Both the parties should try to win the people’s confidence. I feel political parties should not deceive people because people can punish them,” he said.

The Shiv Sena heads the tripartite Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, whose other constituents are NCP and Congress.

Gokhale claimed politicians were responsible for the present condition of the MSRTC (Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation) and Air India.

“I was the brand ambassador of the ST. It is a huge entity which operates over 18,000 buses in Maharashtra,” he added.

Thousands of employees of the MSRTC have been on strike, demanding a merger of the cash-strapped undertaking with the Maharashtra government.

Brahmos deployment on India-China border poses no risk to China's safety: Reports

Chinese observers slammed the Indian government's plan to deploy the BrahMos missile - its most advanced missile - at the India-China border, warning it would add new barriers in talks to peacefully address the border tension and further deteriorate ties, Global Times reported.

However, they noted that the new weapon would be only of theoretical use while posing no actual threat to China's security, the report said.

India TV news reported on Friday that the Indian government has backed the ambitious Char Dham road project, for "wider roads are needed to transport missiles like the BrahMos and other military equipment" to the western part of the India-China border, Global Times reported.

The BrahMos is the most advanced supersonic cruise missile India has. Developed since 2007, it can be installed on ships, submarines, aircraft and ground vehicles and has a range of up to 290 kilometers and a maximum speed of Mach 3, according to Army Technology.

"This is why tension keeps rising along the China-India border and unwanted military conflicts broke out," said Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert. The deployment of the BrahMos shows India's unstoppable greedy ambition to encroach on western China's territory, Song told the Global Times on Sunday.

Song said that despite the theoretical threat to China's border security, the People's Liberation Army has been strengthening its air defense capability to intercept supersonic cruise missiles like the BrahMos, the report said.

Global Times said China could even strike and destroy BrahMos missile silos and other military facilities in advance in events of conflicts, Song emphasised, explaining that "India's poor infrastructure construction in west section of China-India border limits the maneuverability and invisibility of the missile base."

The deployment of the BrahMos can be interpreted as India's pretense of taking a tough stand over the matter, contrary to the fact that the two sides both emphasize the need to address the border issues through peaceful talks, Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times on Sunday.

Madhya Pradesh: Kamal Nath to address tribal convention in Jabalpur on Nov 15

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Congress will be organising an Adivasi Sammelan (gathering of tribal) in Jabalpur on the same day when PM Narendra Modi will be addressing tribal people in Bhopal on Monday.

Politics revolving around the tribal votes has gained momentum as BJP and Congress both are targeting to obtain maximum votes of 21% tribal population of Madhya Pradesh.

PCC chief Kamal Nath will be addressing gathering of tribal people of Mahakaushal region in Jabalpur on November 15. Former minister and senior MLA Tarun Bhanot has been made convener of the programme.

“Congress will organise such programmes in all tribal dominated districts across the state. Main objective of organising Adivasi Sammelan is to convey the programmes and schemes made by the Congress besides highlighting the plight of tribal people in BJP regime,” said Congress spokesperson, Bhupendra Gupta.

Six such programmes are lined up in next one month, he added.

Congress sources also said that a meeting of tribal MLAs and former MLAs is scheduled later this month at Kamal Nath’s residence. Sources said that Nath has already made a strategy related to tribal areas that will be shared with the tribal MLAs and responsibility will be given accordingly.

Earlier, a tribal convention was organised in Barwani on August 6. Congress had also declared holiday on International Day for the Indigenous people, which was later withdrawn by Shivraj-led BJP government.

In state assembly, 47 out of total 230 seats are reserved for the tribal. Moreover, there are 84 assembly seats where tribal population plays decisive role.
