Madhya Pradesh: Kamal Nath to address tribal convention in Jabalpur on Nov 15

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Congress will be organising an Adivasi Sammelan (gathering of tribal) in Jabalpur on the same day when PM Narendra Modi will be addressing tribal people in Bhopal on Monday.

Politics revolving around the tribal votes has gained momentum as BJP and Congress both are targeting to obtain maximum votes of 21% tribal population of Madhya Pradesh.

PCC chief Kamal Nath will be addressing gathering of tribal people of Mahakaushal region in Jabalpur on November 15. Former minister and senior MLA Tarun Bhanot has been made convener of the programme.

“Congress will organise such programmes in all tribal dominated districts across the state. Main objective of organising Adivasi Sammelan is to convey the programmes and schemes made by the Congress besides highlighting the plight of tribal people in BJP regime,” said Congress spokesperson, Bhupendra Gupta.

Six such programmes are lined up in next one month, he added.

Congress sources also said that a meeting of tribal MLAs and former MLAs is scheduled later this month at Kamal Nath’s residence. Sources said that Nath has already made a strategy related to tribal areas that will be shared with the tribal MLAs and responsibility will be given accordingly.

Earlier, a tribal convention was organised in Barwani on August 6. Congress had also declared holiday on International Day for the Indigenous people, which was later withdrawn by Shivraj-led BJP government.

In state assembly, 47 out of total 230 seats are reserved for the tribal. Moreover, there are 84 assembly seats where tribal population plays decisive role.

Cop26: countries agree to accept ‘imperfect’ climate agreement

Glasgow Climate Pact adopted despite last minute intervention by India to water down language on coal phaseout

Countries have agreed a deal on the climate crisis that its backers say will keep within reach the goal of limiting global heating to 1.5C, the key threshold of safety set out in the 2015 Paris agreement.

Alok Sharma, the UK cabinet minister and Cop president, said the deal was “imperfect” but showed “consensus and support”. He said: “I hope we can leave this conference united having delivered something significant for people and planet together as one.”

Richard Ratcliffe walks away with head held high and huge support after 21-day hunger strike

Surrounded by brightly painted pebbles, posters and paintings calling for Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s release, Richard Ratcliffe brought his 21-day hunger strike to an end on Saturday, clinging on to hope his actions have made a difference to his wife’s fate.

He walked away from his makeshift camp outside the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as he wanted to: not in an ambulance but with his head held high – at the last possible moment there was a chance he could reverse the damage he has inflicted on his body.

‘It sucks’: how parts of NSW’s northern rivers reluctantly got vaccinated

The drive to get the population vaccinated is gathering momentum despite the issue dividing families and straining friendships

It’s fair to say the people in the northern rivers of New South Wales generally do not like being told what to do by the government.

In a region with a free-thinking, anti-authoritarian reputation, and a long history of anti-vaccination sentiment, the requirement to get the Covid jab for work or leisure purposes was never going to find a warm welcome.

It could have been worse, but our leaders failed us at Cop26. That’s the truth of it.

Countries who take this crisis seriously must seize the initiative, and make the rest pariahs

Where now? Governments have agreed a weak climate deal which gets us a smidgen closer to holding temperatures to a rise of 1.5C. But as regards all the most important pledges to phase out coal, reduce subsidies and protect forests, Glasgow failed.

The fossil fuel lobby, led by India, held its line, dramatically succeeding in watering down – at the last minute and without due, transparent process – the move to ‘phase out’ coal power, pledging instead to ‘phase down’. The poor came away with next to nothing, there was little urgency and we are still heading for catastrophe. Any chance of halving fast-rising emissions by 2030 – the declared aim of the talks – is now negligible.

Secrets and lies: fears of a liberal ‘deep state’ are a phantom conspiracy | Nick Cohen

For this Tory party, Owen Paterson and many others are ‘victims of the elite’

A paranoid fantasy began the crisis that is ripping through the Conservative party. In what from a rightwing viewpoint must be the most disastrous column in the history of the Tory press, Charles Moore, a friend and Telegraph colleague of Boris Johnson, used a phantom conspiracy to rally the right to Owen Paterson.

Writing on 26 October, Moore could not bring himself to mention the £110,000 Patterson’s corporate backers directed into his bank account annually. In 2009, the Telegraph revealed the MPs’ expenses scandal. Now its boy is in power, the tight, little world of the right’s media-political complex finds the vulgar subject of money beneath it.

Madhya Pradesh: National junior women’s hockey player harassed to vacate home, power supply cut-off six days ahead of pre-boards

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): National women’s junior hockey player from Mandsaur Sagu Dabar is allegedly being harassed by the district administration and forced to vacate the small hut her family has been residing in for past 35 years, only six days ahead of her pre-board exams, despite being served a notice period of seven days, she said on Saturday.

A team of district administration led by Tehsildar Mukesh Soni arrived at her home on Thursday and warned her family to vacate the house within seven days or it will be razed down. Nevertheless, another team barged in the next day, misbehaved with her widowed mother and a sister and cut off the power supply to her home, said Dabar.

Dabar, who has fought all odds of poverty and lack of opportunity to represent her state at nationals, is now on the verge of taking her 12th standard pre-board exams starting from November 19.

But, she has no electricity at her small hut to aid her study.

Soni, who claimed to have no role in cutting the power supply off, however refused to restore the same.

When asked why the family was being threatened and harassed, Tehsildar Soni said, they have been allotted a house in a nearby village Alavadakhedi under PM Housing scheme and they should move in into the same.

Dabar on the other hand, produced documents that verify that her family had bought the plot after paying Rs 1.5 lakh in cash to the Sarpanch of the village.

Dabar’s advocate, Bhagwan Singh, who oversaw the plot transfer, said, “Dabar’s family had paid for the plot by taking loans from local moneylender, which they still are repaying by doing chores at others’ houses. No plot has been allotted to them under any government scheme.”

“Had they been allotted the plot under PM Housing scheme, they would first have needed to apply for the same and they would have received installments to finish the construction. But nothing has happened,” he added.

A house has been constructed on the plot minus flooring and lighting, said Dabar. But she cannot shift to it immediately as they still have to pay Rs 60,000 to the contractor, she added.

Sagu is to appear for her pre-board exams starting from November 19 and she has no means to study at her home sans electricity.

Sagu has played nationals in Kerala, Assam, Ranchi and Bhopal, representing Madhya Pradesh, apart from several laurels she has earned at district and state levels. Sagu dreams that one day she would bring a medal for her country and make her mother proud.

Sagu had lost her father when she was six and has no vivid memory of him. She has grown up watching her single mother doing chores at others’ houses to take care of her and her five siblings, said her coach Avinash Upadhyaya.

Now, that she is at the verge of taking her 12th exams, she has to fight the circumstances no child should ever face in her life, he said.

All she can do is sit under the street light till the mosquitoes bite her off beyond her endurance, he added.

Madhya Pradesh: Oil theft from transformers disrupting smooth supply of power, alleges Congress

Malhargar (Madhya Pradesh): Congress leaders have raised their concern on the increasing cases of theft of oil from the live transformers DP(Distribution Panel) in the area, which has led to the disruption in power supply.

Malhargarh Block Congress President Anil Sharma, Congress leader Parshuram Sisodia, General Secretary Anil Mulasia including other workers reached the office of the Electricity Distribution Company, here in Malhargarh, where they also held discussion with the farmers who had come to the office to take away transformers.

Farmers shared their plight with the leaders and said transformer oil theft from DP is on the rise in the area. Due to frequent disruption in the power supply, they are facing great difficulty in irrigation of the major crops like wheat, garlic and cash crop opium. Sisodiya raised the issue with the electricity company and said that these incidents of oil theft cause a great inconvenience to the farmers as they need power to irrigate farms during sowing season.

Farmers tried to contain the menace of oil theft by applying steel fencing around the transformers. Despite spending money from their pockets, they are still hassled by the theft of oil. Oil theft pose hazard and may cause loss of life but the administration has turned a blind eye to the situation on the ground, said a local. They have appealed to the distribution companies to take preventive measures to contain the menace, including increasing vigilance, especially during the night hours.

Madhya Pradesh: Dairy maintains 8% annual growth

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Union minister for dairies and fisheries Purshotam Rupla said that dairy sector has maintained 8 per cent annual growth in last five years, which is much more than annual growth of manufacturing sector in the country and therefore youths should avail the opportunity. Country’s milk production is worth Rs 8 lakh crore, he added.

He was addressing a workshop on central scheme and entrepreneurship at RCVP Noronha Academy of Administration here on Saturday.

He further said youths should provide employment to others in dairy sector. They should make their contribution in making India self-reliant in grain production. After Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, programme is being held in Madhya Pradesh.

MP Gopalan Pashu Samvardhan Board chairman Akhileshwaranand said road map has been prepared for safety and promotion of livestock in the state.

Atul Chaturvedi, secretary government of India, said, “PM Narendra Modi has instructed to benefit farmers at door step. Farmers credit scheme will be launched from November 15. Aadhaar cards of livestock will be made. It will increase income with sale of dairy products. Kisan Credit Card (KCC) is being given to animal breeders.

The Kisan Credit Card scheme is a Government of India scheme, which provides farmers with timely access to credit. The Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme was launched in 1998 to provide short-term formal credit to farmers and was created by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

The KCC scheme was introduced to ensure that credit requirements for farmers in the agriculture, fisheries and animal husbandry sector are met. This was done by helping them to get short-term loans and provide them with a credit limit to purchase equipment and for their other expenses as well.

Madhya Pradesh: Solar pump open cash avenues for tribal farmers in hilly areas

Khargone (Madhya Pradesh): Mukhyamantri Solar Pump Yojana has ushered hope of prosperity in lives of farmers of hilly tribal areas. The scheme was launched looking into the pathetic situation of farmers from Jhiranya, Bhagwanpura and Bhikangaon. Here despite having land to cultivate crop and water for irrigation, the farmers were dependent on a single crop for their livelihood due to shortage of power supply.

However, they did not lose hope and managed to generate power through diesel pumps which later turned out to be very expensive. To initiate farmers into multi-crop farming in such areas, a solar pump was provided to Pannalal Chhatar Singh Solanki, a farmer of Kotha Bujurg under ATMA Scheme in 2013. He soon gained recognition as the farmer cultivating crop with sunlight, thanks to media.

After initial success, the state government launched Mukhyamantri Solar Pump Yojana in 2017-18. Under the scheme solar pumps are made available at affordable rates by giving special grants to farmers.

Vegetables grown with solar pumps are often the talk of the town during the haat markets. Apart from traditional crops, one can also find strawberry crops in villages during winters as farmers have now become proficient with foreign crops. Strawberry cultivated here is sold in historical place like Maheshwar and Omkareshwar.

Parasram, a farmer who is a class VIII pass out and a resident of Old Bilwa, Bhagwanpura had earlier eased into waiting for long for power supply to cultivate a single crop. However, after installing a solar pump in his field, he not only cultivates jowar and bajra but also wheat, carrot, cotton and taro root. Parasram, like Pannalal, did not buy tractors with his improved earnings, but he is leading a prosperous life.

He is now able to afford treatment of his family members at private hospitals and support higher education of his younger brother. Not just him but many farmers like Pyaar Singh Ghasvadiyya of Kakoda, Sanjay Sikdar and Narasimha Buta of Kotha Bujurg, Richu of Pidi Jamli have gained financial stability with this scheme despite having power issues in their respective villages.

Solar pumps, introduced in the area through Pannalal, have proved to be a boon for many tribal farmers since 2017-18. The pumps with 1460 kilowatt power costing Rs10.65 crore have been installed in the fields of 535 tribal farmers in the district.

At present, farmers in hilly areas have gone through a revolutionary change and shifted from generating power with diesel pumps to alternative source of energy. The farmers have started cultivating market based crop and earn more profits at minimal investment.

Sudanese security forces killed at least five people on Saturday and injured dozens more when they used teargas and live bullets to break up a protest in Khartoum against a military takeover of the government.

Protesters defied a military shutdown of the city to call for a return to civilian rule, as plain-clothed snipers reappeared on the streets on Saturday. On Friday, coup leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan cemented his hold on power by swearing in a new ruling council that excluded the main civilian coalition.

Historian Timothy Snyder: ‘It turns out that people really like democracy’

The author of On Tyranny on the lack of historical literacy, how local news has been replaced by Facebook, and why novels matter to him

Timothy Snyder is a professor of history at Yale University and the author of books about the 20th-century history of central Europe, including Bloodlands, which examined the devastating consequence of Hitler and Stalin’s simultaneous reign of terror over civilian populations, and won the 2013 Hannah Arendt prize for political thought. In 2016, after the election of Donald Trump, Snyder wrote a short book, On Tyranny, which provided 20 brief lessons – “Defend Institutions”, “Remember Professional Ethics”, “Read Books” – from the 20th century that might help readers protect democracy against dictatorship. It topped the New York Times bestseller list for nonfiction in 2017. A new edition of the book, with illustrations by the German-American Nora Krug, whose graphic memoir Belonging confronted Germany’s Nazi past, has just been published.

What prompted you to want to make this graphic version of On Tyranny?
It came out originally in this extremely simple, accessible form. I always had the idea that it could take a different form, but that only became concrete once I read Nora Krug’s Belonging. I cold-called her and said: “Could you please do this?” Part of it was also to renew it. I changed the text a little bit, removed some of the stuff that was specific to 2016 and added some lines that recall what happened in 2020.

Will Smith: now Hollywood royalty, the star’s rise has been far from painless

From Fresh Prince to King Richard, personal upsets have so far failed to derail his childhood goal to be the world’s biggest film star

There’s a seemingly offhand quality which is central to the appeal of Will Smith: an innate magnetism and loose-limbed, casual coolness. But the career path from teenage rap artist to TV actor to superstar status was anything but effortless; it was the result of a self-described “psychotic” work ethic and meticulous, perhaps even obsessive, planning.

For a while, at least, he was one of the most bankable film actors on the planet – a planet that he saved on a regular basis in summer blockbusters. But while that kind of success rate is hard to sustain, Smith has shown himself to be extremely adaptable compared to his contemporaries. From film actor/musician, he has evolved into a multimedia phenomenon. He has adopted a very marketable openness and accessibility, and embraced personal failures as teachable moments.

Madhya Pradesh: Con 'in-laws' dupe man of Rs 1.5 lakh, jewelry

Alot (Madhya Pradesh): In yet another case of wedding con a gang comprising members hailing from Betul and Khandwa duped a man of Rs 1,50,000, a gold mangalsutra and silver anklets while solemnizing his ëweddingí.

Kalu Singh Dangi, a resident of Tal colony in Abupura village was living alone with his ill mother after the death of his wife. He came in contact with one Pawan Singh, a resident of Khandwa who convinced him to marry Babita Thakur from Betul and start a new life.

Dangi accepted the proposal after which the gang introduced him to the fake parents and kin of the bride. The couple tied the knot at Anadi Kalpeshwar temple in August. At the time of wedding bride's parents demanded Rs 1,50,000 from him in return for marrying off their with him. He was also forced to gift a gold mangalsutra and silver anklets to the bride.

Soon after the wedding, the bride feigned sickness. Her fake parents visited her house after 10-12 days and express the desire to organise a religious programme for the couple at the temple. On their request, Dangi went to buy items required for the ceremony and the gang members took advantage of the situation to fled from the spot with the bride and valuables including jewellery.

Dangi kept trying to reach out to Pawan for two days but his attempts to get information about his wife and her parents went futile. On day three, Pawan eventually took his call and told him that the bride will never return.

Realising the con, Dangi lodged a complaint at the police station. Town Inspector Neeraj Sarwan said the accused Babita Thakur, Pawan Singh, Durga Bai, Jaswant Thakur and Bhura Thakur were booked under sections 420 and 406 of Indian Penal Code.

Victims avoid approaching police to save face

Several cases of fake marriages have frequently been reported in the town. People from Khandwa, Maharashtra, Pune and other areas are active in the area with pictures of girls and their bio-data in order to dupe the farmers under the pretext of arranging their marriage. The victims prefer not to inform the police about the incident to save their reputation. If police take cognisance of the issue the gravity of the situation will come to the fore as such cases are rampant in the villages.

Strip Kangana Ranaut of all awards: MVA after her 'real freedom' comment

Mumbai: The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi partners -- the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress -- launched a blistering attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday over actor Kangana Ranaut’s controversial statement on India’s Independence. The Shiv Sena said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s national president J P Nadda must clarify the meaning of the statement and withdraw the awards conferred on her.

Ranaut had described India’s Independence in 1947 as ‘bheekh’ (alms) and claimed the country got real freedom only in 2014.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut demanded that the Centre should take back all the awards given to Ranaut. “Kangana has insulted the nation, which is celebrating the 75th jubilee year of Indian Independence and must apologise to the whole country,” he said.

“She says that India’s freedom in 1947 was ‘bheekh’ (dole). So, does she mean that all the freedom fighters who have been honoured with ‘Tamra Patras’ and other awards are beggars? She has defamed and maligned the whole country,” Raut said.

NCP Chief Spokesman and Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik demanded that the Centre must take back Ranaut’s Padmashri and file a case against her for insulting freedom fighters. “She (Kangana Ranaut) needs to be put behind bars,” he said.

Malik said Ranaut “must have taken an overdose of Malana Cream, a particular variety of hashish which grows specifically in Himachal Pradesh before making this statement”. He claimed that the actor has insulted lakhs of freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives between 1875 and 1947, to oust the British from India.

Maharashtra Congress General Secretary Sachin Sawant tweeted, “Kangana is BJP’s Jhansi Ki Rani, who dares insult the freedom struggle and sacrifices of the freedom fighters, martyrs by saying ‘Azadi Bhik Mein Mili Hai’. Such puppets are deliberately nurtured by the BJP, for this filth. These parrots are not the real culprits but their masters are.”

Sawant added, “Kangana was at the forefront in defaming Mumbai, Maharashtra and undermining the Mumbai police during the Sushant Singh Rajput case. BJP leaders had been supporting her ranting, calling her Jhansi Ki Rani. She was given Y-plus security by the Central government. Now, the BJP should speak up on her recent remarks.”

Mumbai: Byculla zoo records footfall of over 50k visitors with Rs 21.18 lakh revenue collected in just 8 days since Nov 1

The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, popularly known as Byculla Zoo or Rani Baug received a massive response during the first 10 days since it reopened in November 1 after being shut for eight months.

In the first eight days since it reopened, the zoo recorded a footfall of over 50k visitors and the total revenue collected was Rs 21.18 lakh.

On Sunday alone, 13,092 visitors thronged to the zoo and earning the zoo a revenue of over Rs 5 lakh in just one day. The remaining seven days, the zoo has been recording an average footfall of 4,000 to 5,000 enthusiasts, informed Dr. Sanjay Tripathi, director of Byculla Zoo.

The usual number of visitors on weekdays in pre-Covid times was 5,000-6,000 persons.

"The number of visitors we have received between November 1 to November 10 is comparable to pre-Covid times when on weekends crowds went up to 15,000. The total revenue figure is just for eight days as there were two Wednesdays when the zoo remains shut."

The zoo drew over 1,621 visitors and garnered revenue of Rs 68,725 on day one (November 1).

According to zoo authorities, the two biggest attractions for visitors were the two Royal Bengal tigers named Shakti and Karishma, followed by the Humboldt penguins.

After remaining shut for 11 months, the zoo reopened on February 15, 2021, but had to shut down again in April because of the second wave of Covid.

The November 1 reopening has come after a gap of nearly seven months. The zoo has lost a significant amount of revenue during the pandemic. Between March and June 2019, it had collected nearly Rs 1.87 crore through the sale of tickets. Before the lockdown, during peak season, its revenue collection touched Rs 4.5 - Rs 5 lakh per month. However, revenue collected up to March 15, 2020, was just Rs 1.92 lakh.

Tripathi said, "We handled 1,621 people on Monday, this is excluding children below three years of age and senior citizens." He added that during pre-Covid times, the daily average visitor count was 5,000 to 6000, which went down to 3,000 during weekdays between the first and second wave. "We were expecting an increase in footfall during weekends this time and we were prepared," he said.

The Byculla Zoo also gets many visitors because of the visits by morning and evening walkers. However, currently because of Covid-19, only a morning walk is allowed in the zoo between 6 am to 8.30 am followed by the operational timings of the zoo which is 9.30 am to 6 pm.

The entry fee for the zoo is Rs 50, however, the BMC last week appealed to children and senior citizens to avoid visiting the zoo owing to Covid-19.

FPJ Legal: Bombay HC says Nawab Malik should have been more careful while uploading Sameer Wankhede’s birth certificate on social media

Mumbai: While reserving order in Dnyandev Wankhede’s plea seeking interim restraint on Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik, the Bombay high court observed that as a public officer and MLA, the NCP leader should have been more careful while uploading the Mumbai NCB chief Sameer Wankhede’s birth certificate on social media since there seem to be chances of ‘interpolation’ in the birth certificate of NCB officer Sameer Wankhede.

A vacation bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar questioned Malik’s advocate whether the minister had exercised due care while uploading Sameer Wankhede’s birth certificate that showed interpolation.

The HC was hearing a defamation suit filed by Dnyandev Wankhede, the father of the NCB officer who was seeking interim restraint on Malik from posting defamatory statements against him and his family on social media. Dnyandev has sought interim restraint on Malik till the suit is decided.

In his defence, Malik had said that he had “reasonably verified” Sameer’s birth certificate and the ‘nikahnama’ of the latter’s first marriage.

On the other hand, Dnyandev’s additional affidavit had annexed 28 documents to show he was always known as Dnyandev and never as Dawood. The documents included his school leaving certificate, caste certificate, passport, Aadhaar, PAN and election cards and also those of his son and daughter. He had also attached a statement of his late wife which said that she was a Muslim, married a Hindu and then converted.

Arshad Shaikh, advocate for Dnyandev, argued that Sameer’s original birth certificate may have been submitted in school. He pointed out that the purported birth certificate produced by Malik has the name Dawood rectified to Dnyandev.

The advocate argued that because Malik’s son-in-law was arrested by the NCB, the Wankhedes were being targeted, including allegations of extortion being made against the family.

He further said that even after the defamation suit had been filed, Malik continued to tweet and hold press conferences. He informed that Malik had in the past attacked Anna Hazare and “is attacking the ex-CM and his wife.”

Senior advocate Atul Damle, for Malik, said Wankhede had not produced a xerox of the original birth certificate to show it was contrary.

Justice Jamdar said there appeared to be interpolation in the birth certificate produced by Malik. “I am saying this since Day 1, is this the manner in which a BMC officer will write ‘Samir’? There is interpolation,” he said.

Justice Jamdar further said; “You are a member of assembly and you are spokesperson of a national political party. You should be more careful.”

The judge further said that verification was very important. Justice Jamdar said: “The Supreme Court has held that the right to privacy is part of Article 21 (Right to Life) and it is a fundamental right.”

The court also agreed with Shaikh’s argument that the Supreme Court had said one had to be within the parameters, which specifically say that verification is a must.

“Do you admit there is interpolation?” asked Justice Jamdar.

When Damle said that ‘Samir’ only was written in capital letters, justice Jamdar said that “there are also different handwritings” on the certificate.

Besides, the verification by a layman is different from that by a minister, said Justice Jamdar. “You are getting it very easily. General public has to file an RTI application, appeal, second appeal. Therefore, what is the due care you have taken when the document shows apparent interpolation?” asked Justice Jamdar.

To this Damle replied: “Since it is coming from a public authority (BMC), I posted it. I thought it was genuine.”
