Strip Kangana Ranaut of all awards: MVA after her 'real freedom' comment

Mumbai: The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi partners -- the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress -- launched a blistering attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday over actor Kangana Ranaut’s controversial statement on India’s Independence. The Shiv Sena said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP’s national president J P Nadda must clarify the meaning of the statement and withdraw the awards conferred on her.

Ranaut had described India’s Independence in 1947 as ‘bheekh’ (alms) and claimed the country got real freedom only in 2014.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut demanded that the Centre should take back all the awards given to Ranaut. “Kangana has insulted the nation, which is celebrating the 75th jubilee year of Indian Independence and must apologise to the whole country,” he said.

“She says that India’s freedom in 1947 was ‘bheekh’ (dole). So, does she mean that all the freedom fighters who have been honoured with ‘Tamra Patras’ and other awards are beggars? She has defamed and maligned the whole country,” Raut said.

NCP Chief Spokesman and Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik demanded that the Centre must take back Ranaut’s Padmashri and file a case against her for insulting freedom fighters. “She (Kangana Ranaut) needs to be put behind bars,” he said.

Malik said Ranaut “must have taken an overdose of Malana Cream, a particular variety of hashish which grows specifically in Himachal Pradesh before making this statement”. He claimed that the actor has insulted lakhs of freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives between 1875 and 1947, to oust the British from India.

Maharashtra Congress General Secretary Sachin Sawant tweeted, “Kangana is BJP’s Jhansi Ki Rani, who dares insult the freedom struggle and sacrifices of the freedom fighters, martyrs by saying ‘Azadi Bhik Mein Mili Hai’. Such puppets are deliberately nurtured by the BJP, for this filth. These parrots are not the real culprits but their masters are.”

Sawant added, “Kangana was at the forefront in defaming Mumbai, Maharashtra and undermining the Mumbai police during the Sushant Singh Rajput case. BJP leaders had been supporting her ranting, calling her Jhansi Ki Rani. She was given Y-plus security by the Central government. Now, the BJP should speak up on her recent remarks.”

Mumbai: Byculla zoo records footfall of over 50k visitors with Rs 21.18 lakh revenue collected in just 8 days since Nov 1

The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, popularly known as Byculla Zoo or Rani Baug received a massive response during the first 10 days since it reopened in November 1 after being shut for eight months.

In the first eight days since it reopened, the zoo recorded a footfall of over 50k visitors and the total revenue collected was Rs 21.18 lakh.

On Sunday alone, 13,092 visitors thronged to the zoo and earning the zoo a revenue of over Rs 5 lakh in just one day. The remaining seven days, the zoo has been recording an average footfall of 4,000 to 5,000 enthusiasts, informed Dr. Sanjay Tripathi, director of Byculla Zoo.

The usual number of visitors on weekdays in pre-Covid times was 5,000-6,000 persons.

"The number of visitors we have received between November 1 to November 10 is comparable to pre-Covid times when on weekends crowds went up to 15,000. The total revenue figure is just for eight days as there were two Wednesdays when the zoo remains shut."

The zoo drew over 1,621 visitors and garnered revenue of Rs 68,725 on day one (November 1).

According to zoo authorities, the two biggest attractions for visitors were the two Royal Bengal tigers named Shakti and Karishma, followed by the Humboldt penguins.

After remaining shut for 11 months, the zoo reopened on February 15, 2021, but had to shut down again in April because of the second wave of Covid.

The November 1 reopening has come after a gap of nearly seven months. The zoo has lost a significant amount of revenue during the pandemic. Between March and June 2019, it had collected nearly Rs 1.87 crore through the sale of tickets. Before the lockdown, during peak season, its revenue collection touched Rs 4.5 - Rs 5 lakh per month. However, revenue collected up to March 15, 2020, was just Rs 1.92 lakh.

Tripathi said, "We handled 1,621 people on Monday, this is excluding children below three years of age and senior citizens." He added that during pre-Covid times, the daily average visitor count was 5,000 to 6000, which went down to 3,000 during weekdays between the first and second wave. "We were expecting an increase in footfall during weekends this time and we were prepared," he said.

The Byculla Zoo also gets many visitors because of the visits by morning and evening walkers. However, currently because of Covid-19, only a morning walk is allowed in the zoo between 6 am to 8.30 am followed by the operational timings of the zoo which is 9.30 am to 6 pm.

The entry fee for the zoo is Rs 50, however, the BMC last week appealed to children and senior citizens to avoid visiting the zoo owing to Covid-19.

FPJ Legal: Bombay HC says Nawab Malik should have been more careful while uploading Sameer Wankhede’s birth certificate on social media

Mumbai: While reserving order in Dnyandev Wankhede’s plea seeking interim restraint on Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik, the Bombay high court observed that as a public officer and MLA, the NCP leader should have been more careful while uploading the Mumbai NCB chief Sameer Wankhede’s birth certificate on social media since there seem to be chances of ‘interpolation’ in the birth certificate of NCB officer Sameer Wankhede.

A vacation bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar questioned Malik’s advocate whether the minister had exercised due care while uploading Sameer Wankhede’s birth certificate that showed interpolation.

The HC was hearing a defamation suit filed by Dnyandev Wankhede, the father of the NCB officer who was seeking interim restraint on Malik from posting defamatory statements against him and his family on social media. Dnyandev has sought interim restraint on Malik till the suit is decided.

In his defence, Malik had said that he had “reasonably verified” Sameer’s birth certificate and the ‘nikahnama’ of the latter’s first marriage.

On the other hand, Dnyandev’s additional affidavit had annexed 28 documents to show he was always known as Dnyandev and never as Dawood. The documents included his school leaving certificate, caste certificate, passport, Aadhaar, PAN and election cards and also those of his son and daughter. He had also attached a statement of his late wife which said that she was a Muslim, married a Hindu and then converted.

Arshad Shaikh, advocate for Dnyandev, argued that Sameer’s original birth certificate may have been submitted in school. He pointed out that the purported birth certificate produced by Malik has the name Dawood rectified to Dnyandev.

The advocate argued that because Malik’s son-in-law was arrested by the NCB, the Wankhedes were being targeted, including allegations of extortion being made against the family.

He further said that even after the defamation suit had been filed, Malik continued to tweet and hold press conferences. He informed that Malik had in the past attacked Anna Hazare and “is attacking the ex-CM and his wife.”

Senior advocate Atul Damle, for Malik, said Wankhede had not produced a xerox of the original birth certificate to show it was contrary.

Justice Jamdar said there appeared to be interpolation in the birth certificate produced by Malik. “I am saying this since Day 1, is this the manner in which a BMC officer will write ‘Samir’? There is interpolation,” he said.

Justice Jamdar further said; “You are a member of assembly and you are spokesperson of a national political party. You should be more careful.”

The judge further said that verification was very important. Justice Jamdar said: “The Supreme Court has held that the right to privacy is part of Article 21 (Right to Life) and it is a fundamental right.”

The court also agreed with Shaikh’s argument that the Supreme Court had said one had to be within the parameters, which specifically say that verification is a must.

“Do you admit there is interpolation?” asked Justice Jamdar.

When Damle said that ‘Samir’ only was written in capital letters, justice Jamdar said that “there are also different handwritings” on the certificate.

Besides, the verification by a layman is different from that by a minister, said Justice Jamdar. “You are getting it very easily. General public has to file an RTI application, appeal, second appeal. Therefore, what is the due care you have taken when the document shows apparent interpolation?” asked Justice Jamdar.

To this Damle replied: “Since it is coming from a public authority (BMC), I posted it. I thought it was genuine.”

Cop26 in extra time as leaders warn of the deadly cost of failure

Delegates are told they must reach a deal to limit global heating or future generations will be forced into violent competition for resources

Children born today will be fighting each other for food and water in 2050 if the Cop26 climate summit fails, exhausted delegates were told as negotiators fight over the final details of a potential deal.

The deadline for the fortnight-long talks to finish came and went as leading figures took to the floor for what they hoped would be the final time, to exhort each other to cooperate in the interests of people threatened by the climate crisis around the world.

Newly translated letters offer indigenous take of Brazil’s bloody birth

Dutch-Portuguese war of 1645 split the Potiguara people but their leaders’ correspondence across battle lines has finally been translated from Tupi

In 1645, a bloody war raged between Dutch settlers and the Portuguese empire over the sugar plantations of north-east Brazil.

Trapped on either side of the conflict were the Potiguara, a powerful indigenous nation whose leaders penned a series of letters in the Tupi language, enticing their relatives to defect across enemy lines.

What happened at Cop26 – day 12 at a glance

Summary of the main developments on the 12th day of the UN climate summit in Glasgow

Overnight we heard from key architects of the Paris climate deal [the last major UN climate agreement in 2015] that Cop26 targets were too weak to stop disaster. The second draft text faced criticism by campaigners who called for world leaders to be much more ambitious.

Campaigners and civil society groups staged a walkout at the Cop26 venue condemning the legitimacy and lack of ambition of the 12-day conference. They put forward a People’s Declaration, outlining 10 demands from global north countries paying their climate debt to global targets on adaptation and loss and damage.

The Amazon is on the brink of a “catastrophic potential tipping point” from deforestation, degradation, wildfires and climate heating, according to an expert study. It found that crossing the tipping point could result in a permanent loss of rainforest and a rapid shift from rainforest to degraded dry ecosystems with lower tree cover.

Countries, including Norway and Costa Rica, have expressed opposition to the softening of the conference call to end fossil fuel subsidies in the latest draft statement. The statement includes the qualifier “inefficient” fossil fuel subsidies, which allows countries who have fuel discounts for the poor or vulnerable – important in some countries.

Campaigners have called on Cop26 negotiators to agree a properly funded deal to pay towards the loss and damage already being suffered by the global south from climate heating. Rather than “donors”, rich industrialised countries should be called “polluters”, said one climate specialist from Bangladesh.

The least bit of surprising news of the entire conference was that the 6pm deadline for the talks to finish passed without an agreement being announced. Conference chair Alok Sharma has said there would be another round of talks and a revised statement later tonight. But don’t be surprised to find talks carry on into tomorrow or even Sunday.

And finally, Australia has won the “colossal fossil” award at Cop for its “appalling performance” at the climate talks, in a ceremony run by activists from Climate Action Network (CAN). They said the country’s approach had been, like the Australian outback, “a barren wasteland”. The US was second for a lot of “hot air” and blocking progress, and the UK was third for presiding over a “shambolic” Cop26 summit.

Interfaith marriage: After Bombay HC rap, cops arrest 6

Mumbai: Following the Bombay High Court rap for inaction in registering a case and taking action against people who had forcefully taken away a woman from their community to Gujarat as she had an inter-caste marriage, Powai Police arrested all accused in the case on Friday and they were produced before a local magistrate court. Six men have been arrested in the matter, which includes the woman’s alleged second husband, his brother and the sarpanch along with other men, police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 10) Maheshwar Reddy confirmed the development and said that a case was lodged on Thursday night, wherein all the accused were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for kidnapping, abducting woman to compel her marriage (section 366), rape (section 376), marriage ceremony fraudulently gone through without lawful marriage (section 496), detaining a married woman with criminal intent (section 498), criminal intimidation (section 506(2)), criminal conspiracy (section 120B) and wrongful confinement (section 344), along with sections of the Information Technology Act.

This action comes a day after Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale personally assured the Bombay High Court through video conferencing that police would inquire into the lapses with regard to inaction into the violence and death threats faced by a couple following their inter-faith marriage. The top cop’s assurance came following a rap from the court which is hearing a petition by a Mumbai-based couple, who hail from Chaubari village, Bachao taluka in Gujarat, seeking protection.

The woman, 23, belongs to the Ahir community, and the man, 23, is a Brahmin. However, because of caste differences, their marriage didn’t go down well with the woman’s family and their community and the couple were subjected to much suffering. She was taken to the village under the pretext of placating the community, assaulted and married to another man, who raped and tortured her.

After nearly four months, in August, she managed to escape and return to Mumbai and lodged a complaint with the Powai police. All the six accused were produced before a local magistrate court on Friday and were remanded in police custody till November 17, said police.

Mumbai cruise drugs case: NCB SIT records Aryan Khan’s statement

The Narcotics Control Bureau’s (NCB) special investigation team (SIT) probing the alleged cruise drugs case recorded Aryan Khan’s statement on Friday. This is the first time the star kid’s statement was recorded by the SIT after taking over the probe.

Earlier on Friday, Aryan made a quick appearance at the NCB office in Ballard Estate to mark his attendance as per his bail condition. Aryan’s statement was recorded in Navi Mumbai, an official said. Earlier this week, the SIT had recorded Arbaaz Merchant and Achit Kumar’s statements, also co-accused in the case.

Following several allegations levelled by Nawab Malik against NCB Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede, and questions raised over the credentials of witnesses in the case, the NCB formed the SIT headed by Deputy Director General (DDG) Sanjay Kumar Singh. The 15-member SIT will investigate a total six cases, including the Cordelia drugs bust case lodged by the Mumbai zonal unit.

Probing the allegations of payoffs to secure Aryan’s release, the team has already recorded statements of 15 people, including Wankhede and several other officers of Mumbai zonal unit. All the statements have been video recorded, said an official close to the probe.

Gyaneshwar Singh who is heading the vigilance team said, “We have gathered electronic and documentary evidence and also reconstructed the crime scene. Statements of several people crucial for the inquiry are yet to be recorded. We have also moved the Pune court to allow us to record the statement of KP Gosavi.” A vigilance team insider indicated that Shah Rukh Khan’s manager Pooja Dadlani would also be called to join the probe.

National Wrestling: Geeta Phogat misses gold medal on return; Sakshi Malik, Seema Bisla exit early

Former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Geeta Phogat's dream of making a golden return to the mat after marriage and childbirth was dashed while Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik and fellow Olympian Seema Bisla made early exits in the 2021 Senior Men Freestyle, Greco Roman and Women National Wrestling Championship in Gonda on Friday.

A former World Championship bronze medallist Geeta, who returned to competitive wrestling for the first time since becoming a mother in 2018, had to be satisfied with a silver in the women's 59 kg category on Friday. She had cruised to the final with ease where she found Railways' Sarita Mor, also a bronze medallist at the World Championship, a tough nut to crack and lost.

Both Geeta and Sarita have found tough battles earlier. Geeta, the most famous of the Phogat sisters of Haryana, had lost to Sarita in the 2017 Nationals too.

In the women's 62kg category, Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik, could not progress to the medal rounds as she lost to Haryana's Manisha, who went on to lose in the next round and had to settle for a bronze medal. Sangita Phogat, Geeta's younger sister, eventually won the gold beating Ritu Rani in the final.

Shivani Pawar, a silver medallist at the U23 World Championships recently, defeated Seema Bisla, who represented the country at the Tokyo Olympics, in the semifinals and went on to beat junior world championships bronze medallist Simran in the final to win the gold medal.

In the women's 72kg, top contender Divya Kakran, the reigning Asian Champion and bronze medallist at the U23 World Championships, was stunned b' Railways' Pinki in the preliminary rounds. Divya came back strongly to win the bronze medal.

Haryana won the overall championships in the women's section with 188 points while Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) finished second with 147 points.

In the men's freestyle competitions on Friday, Satyawart Kadian of Railways, Sakshi Malik's husband, won the gold medal in 97kg category, beating Harshwardhan of Maharashtra in the final.

ONGC net profit zooms 565% YoY in Q2 to Rs 18,348 cr

State-owned oil and gas explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on Friday reported 565 per cent year-on-year growth in its standalone net profit to Rs 18,348 crore for the second quarter period ending September 2021, a sharp jump over expected profit growth of just over Rs 6,000 given by analysts.

The ONGC had reported standalone net profit of Rs 2,758 crore in the July-September quarter of FY21.

The rise in Q2 profits has come largely on account of decrease in deferred tax liability of the company by Rs 8,541 crore and decrease in current tax by Rs 1,304 crore by opting for lower tax regime during the quarter with newer provisions getting implemented from FY21.

The oil explorer's revenue from operations also jumped 44 per cent year-on-year to Rs 24,353.6 crore in Q2, FY22 against a revenue of Rs 16,916 crore in the same quarter of previous year.

The company's operating margin in the quarter sharply expanded to 48.17 per cent from 32.78 per cent in the year-ago aided by an increase in global crude oil prices.

Shares of ONGC ended 0.9 per cent higher at Rs 154.8 on the National Stock Exchange.

The company board also approved interim dividend of 110 per cent, i.e. Rs 5.50 on each equity share of Rs 5.

The total payout on this account will be Rs 6,919 crore. The record date for distribution of dividend has been fixed for November 23, 2021.

During the quarter, ONGC's crude oil production fell 2.9 per cent to 4.676 million tonne from the previous year level of 4.818 million tonne.

The production of crude oil and gas has declined during the current year mainly due to restrictive conditions created by cyclone Tauktae and due to Covid impact.

Further delay in mobilisation of MOPU Sagar Samrat to WO-16 Cluster project impacted production from this field, the company said in a statement.

Delhi women's panel chief slams Kangana Ranaut over her remarks on India's freedom

Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Friday slammed Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut for her remarks on the country's independence.

Ranaut had kicked off a row on Thursday by declaring that India attained "real freedom" in 2014, when the Narendra Modi-led government came to power, and describing the country's Independence in 1947 as "bheek", or alms.

"The freedom attained due to Bhagat Singh, Azad and Gandhi seems like 'bheek' to her and she calls 'satta ki ghulami' (being a slave to those in power) real freedom. Did she get a national award for such thinking?" Maliwal tweeted in Hindi, while sharing Ranaut's video clip in which she made the comments.

Ranaut was recently awarded the Padma Shri and the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performances in Manikarnika: Queen of Jhansi and Panga.

Watch Video: 'My book is for Hindu-Muslim unity; those who want to politicise, will do,' says Salman Khurshid

New Delhi [India]: Amid the controversy over his recent book 'Sunrise Over Ayodhya', Congress leader and former union minister Salman Khurshid on Friday said that he had written the tome to promote Hindu-Muslim unity and to make people understand that the Supreme Court verdict on the Ramjanmbhoomi at Ayodhya was a good decision.

"Whoever wants to politicise, will do so and whoever wants to write a book, will write. My book is for Hindu-Muslim unity and making people understand that Supreme Court verdict (on Ayodhya) is a good verdict," Khurshid told ANI.

On Wednesday, former union minister Salman Khurshid got embroiled in controversy for allegedly "defaming and comparing Hinduism with terrorism" in his recent book "Sunrise Over Ayodhya: Nationhood in Our Times".

Khurshid's book on the Ayodhya verdict was released last week. It explored the Apex Court's landmark judgement on the Ayodhya dispute. Senior Congress leader Khurshid has compared Hindutva to radical terrorist groups like "ISIS and Boko Haram".

Reacting sharply over the excepts of the book, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Sambit Patra on Friday said that the Congress party's attack on Hinduism is not a coincidence but an experiment. He alleged that the nature of Congress is to attack Hinduism whenever they get a chance.

Meanwhile, two Delhi lawyers have filed complaints on Thursday with Delhi Police against Khurshid, for allegedly defaming and comparing Hinduism with terrorism in his book.

The development comes at a time when seven states in the country namely Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat are slated to go for assembly elections in the year 2022.

Korean firms have huge opportunities in India's startup ecosystem: Goyal

There are huge opportunities exist for Korean investors in India's startup ecosystem, said Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday.

Korea and India need to increase collaboration in sectors such as automobile, textiles, food processing, and chemicals to enhance economic ties, Goyal said.

The minister also invited Korean businesses to invest in India.

''Korean investors and the startup ecosystem I believe can find huge opportunities in India's startup ecosystem. We need to complement our strengths in automobile, textiles, food processing, metals, mining, chemicals and also grow some of our traditional sectors like steel,'' he said at the fourth edition of the India-Korea Business Forum.

He said the government has recently launched a National Infrastructure Pipeline with projects worth over a trillion dollars and it can provide opportunities for companies. ''Today India is the preferred destination for investments. Our experts are at an all-time high, our economy is bouncing back and will possibly see one of the fastest growth rates across the world,'' he added.

Goyal informed that nearly 15,000 Koreans call India their home and about 12,000 Indians live in Korea.

Bhopal: Congress seeks FIR against people responsible for hospital blaze

BHOPAL: Congress leaders and workers staged a protest in front of Kohefiza police station on Thursday asking the authorities to lodge FIRs against people responsible for the fire in Kamla Nehru hospital.

“Only suspension and removal from the post was done, no inquiry has been instituted and no FIR has been lodged against the officials and this is highly objectionable,” said the Congress MLA Arif Masood.

Leading the demonstration, the Congress MLA demanded the police to register a case against people responsible for the fire in the hospital. Negligence of the hospital staff led to the fire in the ward leading to loss of precious lives and for this strictest action should be taken against officials, said Masood.

Accusing the government of hiding the true death toll in the fire incident, Masood said that the state government was not registering the names of the victims to keep the casualty figure low.

As per the government, a fire in the SNCU ward of Kamla Nehru hospital on Monday night claimed the lives of six children.  However, the opposition Congress has put the casualties at 15.
