Donald Trump makes last-ditch effort to keep White House records secret

The former president is asking a court to block release of material related to the House investigation into the attack on the Capitol

Donald Trump, the former US president, has been scrambling this week to make a last-ditch legal bid to block the release on Friday of sensitive White House records related to the deadly 6 January insurrection at the US Capitol.

The National Archives, a federal agency that holds presidential files, is poised to give congressional investigators hundreds of pages and other material, such as video clips, that Trump wants to keep secret.

Madhya Pradesh: Man, sons stone old rival to death, trio on the run

Anjad (Madhya Pradesh): A man and his two sons killed an old rival on Wednesday. The incident was reported from Jhiranya Falia area behind the Government College. The accused allegedly dragged 30-year-old Veeru, a local with a rope, manhandled him before stoning him to death.

Police station in-charge Tara Mandloi and deputy superintendent of police Kundan Singh Mandloi inspected the crime scene after receiving the information.

Rami Bai, wife of deceased, said that her husband had an old rivalry with the accused and they had lately been pressurising Veeru for a compromise. Refusing to pay heed to their proposal may be the reason behind the brutal killing of her husband, she added.

She was not at home when the crime was committed. His five children survive the deceased. The accused pushed the neighbors away when they tried to intervene and rescue the deceased, said a local.

DSP Mandloi said that the accused Ballu Sildar along with his two sons Kamal and Kalu had an old rivalry with Veeru. The case is still pending in court.

A case has been registered and the accused are on the run, he added.

T20 World Cup: Matthew Wade, Marcus Stoinis heist helps Australia sneak past Pakistan into the final

Pakistan were in the driver's seat. Australia were on the floor at 96 for five. It seemed curtains for the Aussies. However, an unbeaten 81-run partnership between Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade helped Australia down Pakistan in the second semi-final of the Men's T20 World Cup in Dubai on Thursday to set up the title-clash against their trans-Tasman rivals, New Zealand. It will be only the second appearance for Australia in the finale and it will ensure that a new champion will emerge in the Men's T20 World Cup.

Shadab Khan's four wickets, including that of a high-flying David Warner, for just 26 runs went in vain for Pakistan. Warner made an attacking 49 to set a good platform for Australia.

It was the right kind of start with the ball for Pakistan, with Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissing Aaron Finch LBW for a first ball duck with an inswinger. Mitchell Marsh had been subject to three brutal deliveries to welcome him to the middle, which he barely survived.

But soon, he got into the groove and added 51 with Warner, who seemed to be batting in different conditions. The southpaw managed to find the fence regularly off seam and spin and kept Australia ahead of the asking rate.

However, the introduction of Khan into the attack had the desired effect for Pakistan. He dismissed Marsh for 28 in his first over, before Steve Smith (five) holed out in his next. After the drinks, he dismissed Warner caught behind. The replays though showed that he didn't nick it as there wasn't a spike on the snicko.

In his final over, leg-spinner Khan sent back Glenn Maxwell (seven), who perished to a switch hit.

With 81 needed off 50 balls and then 50 off the last four overs needed, it seemed Pakistan just needed one or two decent overs to cruise through but Stoinis and Wade had different plans.

Stoinis hit a four and a six off successive balls of Haris Rauf before Wade took over. The wicketkeeper-batter hit Hasan Ali for a six and a four in the 18th over before hitting Afridi for three successive sixes to seal the win. Wade finished 41 not out off just 17 balls with Stoinis unbeaten on 40 off 31.

Earlier, thanks to half centuries from Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman, the Asian side had managed to score 59 off the last four overs to post 176 for four, after being inserted in. Openers Rizwan (67 off 52) and Babar Azam (39 off 44) shared a 71-run stand before Zaman ended the innings on a high with his unbeaten knock of 55 off just 32 balls.

Pakistan enjoyed their best Powerplay of the tournament, racing to 47 for no loss in six overs after Australia put them in to bat.

Rizwan, who was down with flu ahead of the game, did not look at his best early on and Azam took the lead in attacking the Australian pace attack. The Aussies were looking for some swing early on but they were not able to get it. The Pakistan skipper began with a regal cover drive off a late outswinger from Josh Hazlewood. Azam, who had shown supreme form in the group stage, looked in sublime touch. Among the five regal boundaries he hit, his short-arm jab between deep mid-wicket and long-on stood out.

Leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who has been Australia's go to bowler in the middle overs, finally got the breakthrough Australia needed by having Babar caught in the deep with Pakistan reaching 71 for one in 10 overs. More than the ball, it was the pressure created by Zampa that led to the wicket.

Rizwan, who was dropped twice in the innings, got into the act after Babar's dismissal. The wicketkeeper batter grew in confidence as his innings progressed and once he he got his trademark half full half sweep shot right off Hazlewood, he looked much more dangerous.

Australia did well from overs seven to eleven, conceding only 28 before Rizwan changed gears.

He decided to take the attack to the impressive Zampa in the 12th over which went for 14 runs and included a slog sweep for six.

Rizwan got his second six off Hazlewood two overs later, dispatching the seasoned pacer over deep midwicket.

Zaman, who did not have a lot of runs under his belt heading into the semifinal, hit a flat six over long off to gain confidence.

With Zampa completing his tidy effort, Pakistan were looking for a big over and that happened to be the 17th when Hazlewood was hammered for 21 runs, including a six off a free hit.

After Rizwan's dismissal, Zaman displayed his power hitting skills against Mitchell Starc, clubbing him for a six and four in a 15-run over.

Six-hitting machine Asif Ali had a rare failure in the tournament as he was out first ball off Cummins.

Zaman finished the innings on an exhilarating note, depositing Starc for two massive sixes to take the team past 170.

Zampa (1/22 in four overs) was the pick of the bowlers for Australia while Hazlewood was the most expensive, leaking 49 runs in four overs.

Brief Scores: Pakistan 176/4 in 20 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 67, Fakhar Zaman 55*; Mitchell Starc 2/38, Adam Zampa 1/22) lost to Australia 177/5 in 19 overs (David Warner 49, Matthew Wade 41*, Marcus Stoinis 40*; Shadab Khan 4/26) by five wickets

Fearful of overwhelmed morgues and battling lockdown protests, New Zealand faces up to Covid peak

The country that kept the virus out for so long is now coming to terms with endemic Covid

Fears of overwhelmed morgues, record Covid cases, anti-lockdown protests – the headlines this week in New Zealand might evoke deja-vu for anyone who lived through the pandemic in Europe, Asia or America.

New Zealand has recently generated a series of news stories that could have been a year-old dispatch from the opposite side of the globe. National radio announced that hospitals had been buying portable refrigerators to prepare for the possibility of growing Covid deaths. In the capital, Wellington, a crowd of thousands of “pro-freedom” anti-vaccination protesters gathered in front of parliament – one of the first organised, medium-scale expressions of dissatisfaction from a country that had held on to extraordinarily high levels of social support for its Covid response.

Mumbai: Less than 1% fully or partially vaccinated beneficiaries contract Covid-19 between February 1 and November 7

Less than one per cent of those who were fully or partially vaccinated between February 1 and November 7, 2021, have contracted Covid, according to the data shared by the civic health department. When a person is infected after being vaccinated, it is referred to as a case of ‘breakthrough infection’. The number and severity of such infections is low, civic data shows, with 32,898 people being infected in the 10 months since mass vaccination began in Mumbai.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, 35,24,653 beneficiaries had received the first dose of the Covid vaccine, of which only 16,933 – 0.48 per cent – contracted the infection. Similarly, 15,965 of 53,83,945 people – 0.20 per cent – who have received both doses, were infected.

Health officials from the civic health department said the civic body’s data collection exercise was two-pronged. It asked all hospitals to track Covid patients who were admitted. At the same time, its war rooms were tasked with contacting patients in home isolation at the time, to collect information.

“These numbers indicate that vaccines are effective in preventing serious infection in a majority of the population. The absolute numbers may rise, once hospitalised patients are accounted for. That data is being compiled,” said an official.

Breakthrough infections have been noted across the world and while these were initially worrying, doctors have realised that these infections are milder than those suffered by unvaccinated people.

Doctors from the state Covid taskforce said currently vaccines were being used as early generation emergency use authorisation vaccines. “In a conventional vaccine timetable, it would take years to develop a vaccine but these are early generation fast-tracked vaccines and we need more data and strong pharmacovigilance to get better insight of their effectiveness. Better and more effective vaccines will be eventually developed, that will reduce the rate of breakthrough infections,” a member of the taskforce said.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Suresh Kakani said that it was difficult to draw a comparison of breakthrough infections reported with those found across the state or at the national level because such numbers were not available in the public domain.

“The mortality rate in breakthrough infections is also lower and post-Covid complications are minimal. It also shows the globally accepted fact that no vaccine provides 100 per cent safety and there could be a minuscule percentage of breakthrough infections,” he said.

Infectious diseases expert and a member of the Covid taskforce, Dr Om Srivastava, said there was a possibility that some people had been reinfected after taking the vaccine, while some have even been hospitalised. “It is too early to say whether the vaccine is effective or not. For this, we will have to watch and follow up for at least one to three years, but people should take the vaccine when it is their turn and also follow Covid protocol at the same time. When the time comes, a booster dose should also be taken,” he said.

Gujarat riots: Kapil Sibal urges SC to probe SIT's role in 2002 communal riots

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal on Thursday urged the Supreme Court to order a probe against the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that gave a clean chit to then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 communal riots, asserting that it had rendered conclusions contrary to facts.

He was appearing for Zakia Jafri, widow of slain former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri. He asserted that the SIT did not conduct an 'investigation' but did a 'collaborative exercise' and its probe was fraught with omissions to protect conspirators.

"The SIT was rendering conclusions contrary to facts they were aware of. In fact, SIT should be investigated. It is true...I am not concerned with individuals. I am concerned with the process. I am only saying SIT did not do its job. It was an act of protection. It did a collaborative exercise," he submitted.

Sibal said that there was evidence in the form of electronic records, including call data records of senior police officials and mobs identifying houses of Muslims, all of which pointed towards conspiracy. But the SIT ignored all of it and did not conduct any further investigation, he said.
The Magistrate and Gujarat High Court had accepted the closure report filed by SIT prompting the present appeal before the Supreme Court, Sibal said noting how the officials of SIT as well as police were rewarded handsomely.

"All those who collaborated were rehabilitated in a big way. RK Raghavan who headed SIT was made High Commissioner of Cyprus," he said.
He also elaborated on the call data records (CDR) of then Ahmedabad Police Commissioner PC Pandey which showed he was conversing with the accused.

"SIT says Pandey was handling dead bodies of Godhra victims but call data records show he was sitting in office whole day long. Is it his job to handle dead bodies? If he was so concerned would he have allowed the bodies to be brought by road from Godhra to Ahmedabad and allowed passions to flare up. PC Pandey was one of the worst collaborators. He later became DGP of Gujarat. The journey from accused to DGP is disconcerting," Sibal submitted.

Sibal also claimed that there were statements by people belonging to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Rashtria Swayamsevak Sangh claiming that public prosecutors were acting at their behest. He also drew parallels between the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi and the massacre of the Muslims in the Gujarat riots.

The Supreme Court had, in 2008, appointed the SIT to submit a report on a number of trials in Gujarat riots and subsequently also ordered the SIT to investigate the complaint that was filed by the petitioner.

In 2011, the SIT was directed by the Supreme Court to submit its closure report before the concerned Magistrate, and Jafri was given the liberty to file her objections, if any, to the said report.

In 2013, after the petitioner was handed a copy of the same, she filed a petition opposing the closure report, which essentially gave a clean chit to several bureaucrats and politicians, including Narendra Modi.

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid likens Hindutva to Jihadist philosophy in his book on Ayodhya, sparks controversy

Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid has ignited a bushfire with his book on Ayodhya wherein he has likened Hindutva to the radical philosophy espoused by jihadist outfits like the ISIS and Boko Haram.

In the chapter "The Saffron Sky," Khurshid writes, ‘‘Sanatan Dharma and classical Hinduism known to sages and saints were being pushed aside by a robust version of Hindutva, by all standards a political version similar to the jihadist Islam of groups like ISIS and Boko Haram of recent years."

A Delhi-based lawyer Vineet Jindal has taken offence and on Thursday filed a complaint with the police against the Congress leader. In his complaint, the lawyer alleged that the instigating and provocative statement has infuriated several followers of the Hindu. "Our constitution provides every citizen with the freedom of speech and expression but the misuse of this right is inexplicable when it threatens the honour and harmony of the country and provokes its citizens…then it is a grave offence," the petition read.

Amit Malviya, the BJP's IT cell chief, latched onto the statement and tweeted: "Congress's Salman Khurshid in his new book writes that Hindutva is similar to the jihadist Islamist groups like ISIS and Biko Haram. What else can we expect from someone whose party coined the term Saffron terror just to draw equivalence with Islamic jihad, to get Muslim votes?’’

BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said the book is hurting religious sentiment. "Hinduism was compared to ISIS and Boko Haram. Why is the Congress party doing this while staying in India? Congress is weaving a web like a spider against Hindus… All this happens at the behest of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Earlier, the term 'Hindu terrorism' was invented in the Congress office".

Demanding that Khurshid be sacked from the Congress, he said, "If Sonia Gandhi respects Hindus, then she should come out and explain. If you remain silent, then it will be clear that your ideology is also against Hindus".

"Due to the politics of hatred of Congress, the public will teach a lesson in the assembly elections to be held in 5 states next year," he added.

AAP files complaint against Kangana Ranaut for her 'Independence in 1947 was ‘bheek’ comment'

Kangana Ranaut has stirred a hornet’s nest with her remarks in a TV show that India got its freedom in 2014 when PM Modi came to power. As regards what Nehru described as ‘India’s tryst with destiny’, she is convinced what was wrested from the colonial masters in 1947, after a long-drawn struggle by freedom fighters, was ‘bheekh’ or ‘charity’.

The “Manikarnika” actor, known for her penchant for making provocative and often inflammatory statements, found herself in the eye of a storm yet again.

The Aam Aadmi Party lost no time in petitioning the Mumbai Police demanding that a case be registered against her for "seditious and inflammatory" comments.

Politicians of all hues, including BJP MP Varun Gandhi, reacted with outrage on social media. Slamming her, Varun tweeted in Hindi, "Insulting the sacrifice of Mahatma Gandhi sometimes, praising his killer at other times, and now the disdain for the sacrifices of Mangal Pandey, Rani Laxmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and lakhs of freedom fighters. Should I call this mind-set madness or treason?"

"It (her utterance) is an anti-national act and must be called out as such. To not to do so would be a betrayal of all those who shed blood so that today we may stand tall and free as a nation," Gandhi said, warming up to his theme.

AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon said actor should also be charged under section 504 of the IPC – causing “an intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace.” She sees in the statements a desire to create "public mischief."

Targeting the Congress party, Kangana also said at the show, "If we get freedom as 'bheek', is it even freedom? What the British left behind is the Congress... The party was an extension of the British....”

Incidentally, Ranaut was awarded a Padma Shri earlier this week.

The inscrutable actress, whose Twitter account has been suspended, hit back on Instagram at her detractors.

The dormant Congress reacted sharply. "This statement is an insult to our freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India's Independence. Shame on you Kangana!" said Congress' Salman Nizami.

Gaurav Pandhi, the Congress' digital communications and social media coordinator, said the RSS could never accept the fact that their British masters were driven out in 1947.

"...Their slavery knew no bounds. No wonder they didn't hoist the Tricolour for half a century. The return of slavery in 2014 was their 'independence'. Kangana Ranaut is just one of them."

Shiv Sena leader Priyanka Chaturvedi likened Ranaut's remarks to those of another BJP member who recently claimed that India has been given freedom as lease for 99 years.

Chaturvedi said, "New Ruchi Pathak on the block. From 99 years lease to ‘bheek main mili azaadi’. All the blood, sweat and ‘balidan’ (sacrifice) of our freedom fighters, including Jhansi ki Rani, dismissed to please the master! The WhatsApp history fans."

Ranaut may not be on Twitter but her name was trending with many, including historian S Irfan Habib, who interjected with their views. ‘‘Shamelessness is abysmal," Habib wrote.

Actor Swara Bhasker, who also shared the video clip on her Twitter page, wondered about those who were heard clapping at Ranaut's comments.

"Who are the idiots who are clapping is what I want to know," wrote Bhasker, who has worked with Ranaut in the "Tanu Weds Manu" series and is of late a critic of the actor.

Others, too, were furious, some questioning her recent Padma Shri award. "Will we now start celebrating a new Independence Day?" asked filmmaker Onir.

Without naming the actor, badminton player Jwala Gutta wrote, "What do you call a person who only spews venom when she/he opens their mouth? Just curious!!"

Lawyer Aman Wadud said it was a well thought out statement from the actor. "Ground being prepared to attack the Constitution. Well-thought-out statement, don't make the mistake to read this in isolation."

Stand-up comic Kunal Kamra, a vocal critic of the government, put out this one-line post on Twitter, "Kangana is right India did get independence from common sense & rational thinking in 2014."

Boris Johnson drags Tories ever deeper into sleaze bath | John Crace

PM attempts to rewrite history to suit himself, on grandest of scales

If only it were that simple. In BorisWorld, all Boris Johnson has to do is turn up to sprinkle the stardust of mindless optimism and things fall into place. It worked for Brexit and it worked for his 2019 general election campaign. Bertie Booster ruled OK. But climate change is a rather tougher nut to crack. Other countries aren’t quite so susceptible to his charms and the Cop26 summit in Glasgow is in danger of ending in disappointment.

Quite what Johnson expected to achieve by turning up to Cop26 for a few hours on Wednesday afternoon was anyone’s guess. Still, at least he travelled by train this time. Maybe he just couldn’t accept his powerlessness and that his presence was a total waste of time. That talk of banging negotiators’ heads together really wouldn’t cut it after all. Whatever it was, there was none of the Bertie Booster tub-thumping about the 25-minute press conference he gave shortly before he scuttled back to London.

Nawab Malik accuses Devendra Fadnavis of patronising fake currency racket; shielding people with underworld links and giving them key posts

Mumbai: NCP chief spokesperson and Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik on Wednesday delivered on his promise to drop a ‘hydrogen bomb’ on the leader of the opposition Devendra Fadnavis, alleging that the latter was responsible for the criminalisation of politics and appointing people with underworld links on key government undertakings. He also accused Fadnavis of sweeping under the carpet a case of seized fake notes.

At a press conference, Malik said there were more ‘bombs’ to be dropped in coming days and he would spill the beans on this issue against the BJP. “Hosh unke yoon ude ki chehre pheeke pad gaye/ Hamne toh bus ye kiya unhein aaina dikha diya!” he tweeted on Wednesday evening, summing up his work so far.

The minister’s cabinet colleagues, praised him for his exposés, with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray setting the ball rolling.

Fadnavis had, on Tuesday, alleged a dubious land deal involving Malik, his family and two convicts of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case over a decade ago, a charge refuted by the minister.

Malik claimed that Fadnavis has close links with the close aide of Dawood Ibrahim, Riaz Bhati. He asked how Bhati could have gained access to a function attended by the Prime Minister.

Bhati had been caught in a fake passport case but was released on bail in two days when Fadnavis was the CM, Malik said. “Bhati was arrested in a 2015 fake passport case, but is absconding now,” he added.

Besides, Fadnavis had appointed criminal Munna Yadav from Nagpur as the chairman of the Construction Workers Board while Haider Azmi, involved in illegal immigration from Bangladesh, had been appointed chairman of the Maulana Azad Finance Corporation, Malik claimed.

Further, he claimed that Fadnavis had protected fake currency rackets with the help of Sameer Wankhede, who was then with the DRI.

“While fake notes were seized in other states after demonetisation on November 8, 2016, there was not a single such instance in Maharashtra. At that time, Fadnavis was the chief minister of the state. On October 8, 2017, the Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized fake notes worth Rs 14.56 crore from the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). But Fadnavis helped sweep the case under the carpet. The seized amount was later shown with a value of Rs 8.8 lakhs. Why the case was not handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA)?” asked Malik, adding that incidentally, Sameer Wankhede (the Narcotics Control Bureau officer against whom Malik has levelled several serious allegations) was the DRI's joint director at that time. He noted that the notes had come from Pakistan but bail was granted immediately.

Malik claimed that the collusion between Fadnavis and Wankhede was public now. He alleged that Fadnavis had taken Wankhede’s help to save criminals. “Is Fadnavis making allegations against me to divert attention from Wankhede, who is facing serious charges and is being investigated?” he asked.

One Imran Alam Sheikh had been arrested in this case, Malik said. Later, his brother Haji Arafat Sheikh was made the chairman of the state minority commission, the minister claimed.

Malik also alleged that Fadnavis had sheltered an individual whose second wife was a Bangladeshi. When the Malad police tried investigating the case, they were pressured.

'I learned long ago never to wrestle with a pig...': Devendra Fadnavis' tweet after Nawab Malik levels stunning allegations

Mumbai: Minutes after NCP chief spokesperson and Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik alleged his close links with the underworld, the leader of the opposition, Devendra Fadnavis, shot back with a tweet quoting George Bernard Shaw. “Thought of the Day,” said Fadnavis, quoting Shaw: “I learned long ago never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty and besides, the pig likes it.”

Fadnavis did not hold any press conference, but suspended BJP legislator Ashish Shelar said, “Forget the hydrogen bomb, now Nawab Malik will need oxygen. Malik’s attempt to accuse Fadnavis is like ‘uncooked biryani’ from Birbal’s story.” He added that Malik needs to maintain his mental balance.

Shelar claimed there was no truth in the allegations levelled by Malik against Fadnavis. “No matter how much you dig, you will not find anything to accuse. Munna Yadav, Haji Arafat Sheikh and Haji Haider Azam are all BJP karyakartas. They were appointed as presidents on various positions. Of these, there is not a single offence registered against Haji Arafat Sheikh and Haji Haider Azam. Only after thorough investigations were they legally appointed,” he clarified.

Munna Yadav, Shelar said, was accused of political agitations, and he would personally talk about it.

“Since the past two years, Malik is in power in the state and the home ministry is also with one of the ministers from his political party. There has not been a single offence in the past two years registered against Haji Arafat Sheikh and Haji Haider Azam, against whom Malik is levelling serious allegations. And even if there is any offence against them, it is only the offence pertaining to political agitations,’’ said Shelar.

Also, Malik mentioned about Mohammed Alam Sheikh, brother of Haji Arafat Sheikh, who was then a Congress secretary but is currently working as an NCP activist.

Shelar claimed that it had become the new job of the NCP to make one allegation every single day and then run away. “Also, in his press conference, Malik had mentioned Riaz Bhati and shared some photographs with the media,” said Shelar, going on to also share Bhati’s photos with leaders from the current Aghadi government.

Talking about Bhati’s presence at a programme featuring the Prime Minister, Shelar said that Bhati had nothing to do with PM’s office nor his programmes. Saying he did not wish to share photos, he did so, showing the media persons pictures of Bhati sharing the screen with NCP president Sharad Pawar, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Aaditya Thackeray and Aslam Sheikh. Then, he proceeded to advise, “Do not stoop so low in politics. Is this some kind of ‘Nawabi level’ of inferiority complex in politics?”
