In a surprise press conference, the two superpowers promised to cooperate more and hoped for the success of Cop26
China and the US announced a surprise plan to work together on cutting greenhouse gas emissions in the crucial next decade, in a strong boost to the Cop26 summit, as negotiators wrangled over a draft outcome.
The world’s two biggest emitters had been trading insults for the first week of the conference, but on Wednesday evening unveiled a joint declaration that would see the world’s two biggest economies cooperate closely on the emissions cuts scientists say are needed in the next 10 years to stay within 1.5C.

With several media reports mixing the gruesome murder of a budding Haryana wrestler Nisha Dahiya with her namesake who had recently won laurels for the country at the Under-23 World Wrestling Championship in Belgrade by winning the bronze medal, Nisha had to take to the social media to announce she was participating at an event and was still alive.
“I am in Gonda... I am absolutely fine. This is fake news. I am fine,” Dahiya said in a video posted by the Wrestling Federation of India.
The reports had claimed Nisha, along with her brother Suraj, were killed by unknown assailants at the Sushil Kumar Wrestling Academy in Sonepat’s Halalpur. Her mother, Dhanpati, was also shot at and was shifted to Rohtak’s PGI in critical condition.
Nisha, according to Haryana sports department officials, was a promising young wrestler whose dream was to achieve laurels for the state and the country.
The Sonepat police have launched an investigation into the killing of the promising young wrestler. An officer connected with the investigations said they were working on leads and the culprits would be arrested soon. It is still unclear whether there was a single assailant or more.
Wrestling has been a tradition since ages in rural Haryana. Most of the villages in the state have akharas where young boys and even girls practice in the mud pit. In rural Haryana, where gyms are very few, wrestling is seen as a good sport for exercise and to burn those extra calories gained from their high fat diet consisting of dairy products.
The villages in Sonepat district are famous for producing champion wrestlers like Olympic medalists Ravi Kumar Dahiya and Yogeshwar Dutt.
Ever since Vijender Singh won India’s first boxing medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, it created a new boxing revolution in Bhiwani district of Haryana, Vijender’s home town. Bhiwani now boasts of a lot of boxing academies and has become a hub to some of India’s finest boxers.
Haryanvis, while happy that Nisha is alive, will mourn the Nisha whose dream was to bring laurels to her state and country.
Daryl Mitchell's unbeaten 72-run knock aided by James Neesham's quickfire cameo of 27 runs off just 11 balls helped New Zealand defeat England by five wickets to enter the final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
Chasing, New Zealand got off to the worst start possible as the side lost opening batter Martin Guptill (4) in the very first over bowled by Chris Woakes. The Kiwis were given a body blow in the third over as Woakes sent skipper Kane Williamson (5) back in the hut. After the end of the powerplay, New Zealand's score read 36/2.
Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell found run-scoring difficult and at the halfway mark, New Zealand's score read 58/2 with the side needing 109 runs to win from 60 balls. The 82-run stand for the third wicket was finally broken by Liam Livingstone as he had Conway (46) stumped at the hands of Buttler with New Zealand still needing 72 runs to win from 38 balls. Glenn Phillips (2) was the second wicket for Livingstone and England was in firm control with New Zealand at 107/4 in the 16th over.
In the 17th over bowled by Chris Jordon, James Neesham and Mitchell managed to score 23 runs, and the match swayed in favour of the Kiwis, with Williamson and team needing 34 to win from 18 balls. However, another twist came in the game as Adil Rashid sent Neesham (27) back to the pavilion, and New Zealand required 20 to win from 12 balls. In the end, Mitchell guided New Zealand to a five-wicket victory with six balls to spare.
Earlier, Moeen Ali and Dawid Malan played knocks of 51 and 42 respectively as England scored 166/4 against New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Twitter users congratulated the Kiwis for reaching the final of the T20 World Cup.

The Western Railway (WR) has decided to replace all steel girders placed on culverts between Churchgate and Virar stations with concrete girders to improve the passengers’ safety and make the daily ride smooth. The steel girders mark the train ride full of jerks.
The officials said that the concrete girders need less maintenance as compared to steel girders.
“Most of these old steel girders are around 50-year-old. Hence need more maintenance and care,” said a WR official. He added that over a dozen such culverts exist in the suburban section.
“Precast concrete girders not only increased time efficiency, enhanced construction safety, durability, reduced wastage, and neat working areas due to reduced clutter but also reduced the jerk of trains,” said a senior officer.
The officer said that compared to other materials and bridge superstructures, studies show prestressed girders have the most extended service life and require less maintenance. “Prestress concrete girders are also increasingly specified for their aesthetic versatility, strength, quality, and shortened construction time,” added a WR official.
The official said that the tendering process for replacing steel girders of all the culverts is already started and will be completed in phases.

Kolkata: While observing Nandigram Diwas, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh claimed that if recounting takes place in Nandigram constituency then West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would win by over 22000 votes.
“In days to come TMC will uproot Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram as everyone knows that he had done nothing during the dastardly attack of the erstwhile Left Front government on common people for acquiring lands. If recounting is held in Nandigram then TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee will win by over 22000 votes against Suvendu,” claimed Kunal.
Notably, in 2007 due to forceful land acquisition by the Left Front government several common people had died and the then Opposition party leader Mamata Banerjee stood by the people against the ‘Nandigram Massacre’.
It can be recalled during the poll campaigning of the Assembly election, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had time and again claimed that during the time of need Suvendu and his entire family was ‘inactive’ and didn’t do anything to rescue the people.
However, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari slammed Kunal saying that those leaders who had visited Nandigram are ‘servants’ of Mamata Banerjee and also that they are not ‘aware’ of the actual incident that took place.
“God should forgive them for their lies. People of Nandigram knows that Suvendu and his family took care of people at every emergency for which even during Left Front government people of Nandigram had voted for Suvendu and again people of Nandigram helped LoP’s victory against TMC supremo,” mentioned Suvendu.
West Bengal BJP vice president Jay Prakash Majumdar said that recounting should take place in all the constituencies.
“TMC’s landslide victory won’t be there if recounting takes place in all the constituencies. Kunal Ghosh if he is confident about Mamata Banerjee’s victory in Nandigram should demand recounting in all 294 constituencies in West Bengal,” said Majumdar.
James Neesham played the perfect fire to the ice that was Daryl Mitchell as New Zealand did the unthinkable, defeating England in the semi-final of the Men's T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. Neesham walked in with the Kiwis needing 60 off just 29 balls and acted the perfect catalyst, hitting 27 off just 11 balls even as Mitchell stayed unbeaten on 72 off 47 to see them home.
It seemed as if New Zealand's chase was going awry as they were left needing 107 off the last ten overs. The start was far from ideal with Martin Guptill (four) and Kane Williamson (five), the pillars of the Black Caps, dismissed quite early by Chris Woakes. Mitchell was left having to keep them in the game in company of Devon Conway.
The left-right combo prevented further fall of wickets for some time as they added 82 for the third wicket. However, the partnership was devoid of much momentum with Mitchell struggling to find the boundary even as Conway was slowly starting to find it. The southpaw was on 46 off 38 when he was stumped off Liam Livingstone.
The part-time spin - Livingstone bowls both off and leg spin - also got rid of Glenn Phillips for two with just 29 balls left in the chase.
However, Neesham had different plans, swinging from the get go. He managed to find the ropes thrice - twice in a Chris Jordan over, which proved decisive. Jonny Bairstow's athletic effort almost managed to curtain Neesham's stay but it turned out to be otherwise, as Bairstow's knee touched the bowling ropes in an attempted tag-team effort. It was reminiscent of Trent Boult stepping on the ropes as he took a catch during the final of the Men's World Cup final in 2019 between these two teams.
Adil Rashid, bowling the 18th over, managed to see the back of Neesham after his blitz but it was too late. Mitchell in the interim found his touch, completed the half century as the Kiwis finally got past England in a World Cup knockout game.
Earlier, Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali added 63 for the third wicket, which acted as a base for England to post 166 for four.
Put into bat bat first, openers Bairstow and Jos Buttler took 16 runs off the fourth over by Boult after scoring only 13 runs in the first three overs. At 37/0 in five overs, England looked to finish Powerplay on a high. But in the next five overs, England got just 30 runs and lost Bairstow and Buttler.
Adam Milne took a wicket on his very first ball of the sixth over with Bairstow chipping an uppish drive and captain Williamson grabbing the catch diving to his left. Three overs later, Buttler fell while trying to reverse sweep against leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, trapped plumb by a leg-break in front of the stumps. New Zealand almost had a third wicket if not for keeper Conway dropping Malan's catch in the tenth over.
From there, Malan brought out a flurry of exquisite boundaries, driving and lofting over extra cover against seamers and spinners. Moeen Ali found a brace of boundaries and kept the partnership ticking with Malan. Malan pulled Southee for England's first six in the start of the 16th over. But on the next ball, the 63-run partnership came to an end as Malan (41 off 30) tried to repeat the shot but the feather edge went behind to the keeper.
Ali took the centrestage by whacking Sodhi over deep mid-wicket for a six. Ali then began the next over with a pulled six followed by Livingstone clubbing the last ball for a straight six. Livingstone slapped past Boult in the 19th over to cross the 150-mark. Though Livingstone (17 off 10) picked out long-off in the final over off Neesham, Ali reached his half-century with a boundary through extra cover as 99 runs came off the last ten overs.
Brief Scores: England 166/4 in 20 overs (Moeen Ali 51*, Dawid Malan 41, Tim Southee 1/24, Adam Milne 1/31) lost to New Zealand 167/5 in 19 overs (Daryl Mitchell 72*, Devon Conway 46, James Neesham 27) by five wickets
Ex-president tells trial the government had no prior warning of Paris 2015 attacks
The former French president François Hollande has told a Paris court that authorities “did everything we could” to prevent terrorist attacks on the country – including launching military strikes on jihadist training camps in Syria and Iraq – but the government did not have information that could have stopped the 2015 Paris terror attacks.
“If I had the slightest doubt on what we had done, I would tell you, say sorry and ask for forgiveness,” Hollande said. “But that is not my approach. I understand the suffering of the victims. I am trying in my answers [to the court] to give confirmation that everything was done.”

BHOPAL: Calling the fire tragedy that took place at Kamala Nehru Hospital as outcome of criminal negligence, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday ordered fire safety audit of all hospitals in the state. “Those responsible for the tragedy will not be spared,” warned the CM while discussing the incident with his colleagues in the Cabinet meeting.
“Some of our infants lost their lives. Mind and soul are pained by this heart-breaking incident. The children who were in the hospital were under our protection, it was our responsibility to save their lives. This is a serious incident,” said Chouhan. The CM also directed to conduct fire safety audit of all government and non-government hospitals immediately. “As a result of Covid-19, oxygen lines have been laid in many hospitals. This adds to the need for fire safety audits in the hospitals. Therefore, the report of fire safety audit of hospitals should be submitted at the earliest,” he added.
The CM said the fire broke out last night apparently due to a short circuit. “This was unfortunate incident and (outcome of) a criminal negligence. The Additional chief secretary Health and Medical Education will investigate the incident and strict action will be taken against the guilty”, he added.
Praising the hard work of minister for Medical Education Vishwas Sarang, who immediately rushed to the hospital on getting information about the fire, the CM said who put their lives at risk to rescue the children deserve appreciation. Such doctors, nurses, ward boys etc would be honoured.
The CM said Sarang reached the spot as soon as he got the information about the incident and immediately coordinated the relief work. The CM also thanked the police administration and the team of doctors for taking prompt action and saving the lives of children.
He further said, “I had a desire to reach the spot immediately. I constantly remained in touch with Sarang. I was told that my going there may divert the attention of the people engaged in the relief work. The focus of the teams should be on evacuation of children safely.”

Bearing in mind the demands for setting up breastfeeding rooms for nursing mothers across civic offices, in a first, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has gone a step ahead and proposed a themed garden for babies, which will include the above-requested facility. A garden on these lines is proposed to be nurtured in Agripada, south Mumbai.
The garden will come up on a large plot of land reserved for a park in the Agripada area of Byculla, under the jurisdiction of E ward. A ‘baby feeding room’ will be constructed for all the infant visitors to this park. There will be toilets with infant rooms, playgrounds for children, an open gym for children, a dedicated area for yoga, decorative lights and other community spaces.
The park will have decorative entrances to catch the eye of its wee visitors. The defensive wall will get a facelift and new, decorative nets will be installed along it. A new sidewalk will be constructed here, with Kota and Jaisalmer stone. Lawn, shrubs and greenery will be planned, officials said.
According to officials, the project is estimated to cost Rs 2.14 crore and the Mumbai civic body has appointed a contractor for the work. The company that has been shortlisted bid at 36 per cent less than the BMC’s estimate.
On the one hand, the BMC had cancelled the tender and confiscated the amount due to bidding less than 30 per cent in the maintenance contract of the parks. But in the development of this park, the contractor tried to get the work by bidding at a lower rate of about 37 per cent.
The proposal was to be tabled at the standing committee meeting on Tuesday for final approval. However, it did not come up for discussion but is expected to be taken up next week.

The proposal for a cycle track on the sidewalk along the protective wall around the Mahalaxmi racecourse, got the final nod from the civic standing committee on Tuesday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be spending Rs 1.22 crore on the project, said a civic official.
The protective wall adjacent to the racecourse on Dr E Moses Road is in a dilapidated condition and the sidewalk is also damaged in some places.
The BMC, along with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is constructing cycle tracks throughout the city. Similar projects have been undertaken at Dahisar, Borivli, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Dadar by several corporators and legislators.
According to the draft proposal tabled before the standing committee, the plan is to end illegal parking along the sidewalk too. The proposal, tabled before the standing committee meeting on Tuesday also mentioned that the work on the cycle track would be completed in four months and the contractors concerned would have the responsibility of maintaining it for two years.
“There will be a sidewalk and a cycle track at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse. Besides this, to provide an unobstructed view of the racecourse, we'll demolish the wall and replace it with a fence. The entire stretch of road just across from Famous Studio is currently lying unused. We will revamp and transform it into a functional environment for pedestrians and cyclists,” said a senior BMC official.
Along with this, a Rs 3.4 crore proposal to demarcate the buffer zone around Sanjay Gandhi National Park was to be tabled before the standing committee on Tuesday. The BMC plans to demarcate the buffer zone around the SGNP as per Development Plan 2034. However, this proposal did not come up for discussion on Tuesday and was set aside until the next standing committee meeting.

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Every corruption scandal will be exposed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government and whoever is the culprit will not be spared, said Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, a day after his party accused Congress of corruption in the Rafale deal.
"Every corruption scandal will be exposed in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government and whoever is the culprit will not be spared," said Vijayvargiya on Tuesday.
Reacting to BJP leader Muralidhar Rao's comment where he said that people belonging to Brahmin and Baniya communities are in his pockets, Vijayvargiya said "I think a sensible person like him will not make such a statement, his statement is being partially cut and edited. I have not been able to talk to him on this matter." Earlier, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra on Tuesday alleged corruption by the Congress party in the Rafale deal between 2007 to 2012 and termed the party as "I Need Commission (INC)".
Addressing a press conference at BJP headquarters, Patra said, "We all saw the way the opposition parties, especially the Congress party, tried to create a false atmosphere regarding Rafale before the 2019 elections. They felt that this would give him some political advantage." "The article published in France media talks about Dassault aviation and 7.5 million euros, 65 crores rupees commission was paid by it. A middle man was paid this amount. Atleast, 7.5 million euros were paid, as per the article. This article states that a maximum of 11 million euros was paid as commission to SM Gupta. His name surfaced in the AugustaWestland case. This is not just a coincidence. There is a conspiracy. Rest, I believe is a matter of investigation," Patra added.
