Elif Shafak: ‘Reading Orlando was like plunging into a cold but beautifully blue sea’

The novelist on her love of Virginia Woolf, being inspired by HG Wells and how Jack Kerouac’s ego puts her off his books

My earliest reading memory
I was in my grandmother’s house in Ankara, Turkey. I must have been six years old. I learned how to read from Grandma’s cookbooks and traditional Middle Eastern love stories – Layla and Majnun, Ferhat and Shirin.

My favourite book growing up
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Back then a company in Turkey had published the story as a graphic novel, and I adored it. I not only read and reread the novel, but also painted every little drawing in it – the bonnets, the gowns, the guillotine. I loved history and I now realise that perhaps there was something personal going on as well: after my parents separated, my father stayed in France and remarried. He had another family, half-French, half-Turkish. We were completely estranged for a long, long time. So I was especially interested in books that had a connection with the bloody history in France.

A summary of the main developments on the fifth day of the UN climate summit in Glasgow

Several thousand protesters marched into central Glasgow for a youth protest. Children took to the streets with their parents, classmates and teachers. They demanded that world leaders do more to stop polluters and save the planet from catastrophic rising temperatures.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg slammed Cop26 as a “failure” and a “PR event”. “The leaders are not doing nothing, they are actively creating loopholes and shaping frameworks to benefit themselves and to continue profiting from this destructive system,” she said.

Mira Bhayandar: Toeing corporate lines, MBMC launches 'Employee of the Month' award

Taking inspiration from the corporate sector for creating a culture of recognition, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) in an attempt to encourage and boost the morale of their staff has launched the “Employee of the Month” (EOM) reward programme.

This month the reward was bagged by Dinesh Kangurde, a clerk attached to the public transport department for his dedicated services towards increasing the footfall of bus commuters to pre-Covid levels. The reward comprising a memento and certificate of excellence was presented by municipal commissioner Dilip Dhole in the presence of senior officials at the main administrative building of the civic body in Bhayandar on Wednesday.

“I am very glad that the municipal commissioner and other higher-ups recognized my services. I will work much harder to ensure better coordination in the bus route network mechanism so that people get a hassle-free commuting service,” said Kangurde.

“From now on we will felicitate one employee every month on the basis of his/her performance on various parameters. The idea is to motivate employees towards effective functioning of each department,” said Dhole.

The winner’s photograph will be displayed on internal staff portals. The average number of commuters travelling in Mira Bhayandar Municipal Transport (MBMT) buses on a daily basis crossed the 51,000 mark.

Before the lockdown was imposed in March-2020, the average number stood at 40,000 commuters per day. The civic chief is also mooting upon the idea of picking the top performing ward office and top performing department every year.

Watch Video: Ravindra Jadeja's hilarious reply after India's win over Scotland in T20 World Cup

India beat Scotland by eight wickets with 81 balls to spare in their Super 12 clash of the Men's T20 World Cup in Dubai on Friday. That meant that their NRR received a huge boost.

However, India's progress to the semi-final hinges on the New Zealand versus Afghanistan match, which the latter need to win. If Afghanistan beat New Zealand, it will be a three-way battle between India, New Zealand and Afghanistan for the second semi-final spot from Group 2, with Pakistan already qualified.

After the match, in the press conference, Jadeja was asked by a reporter as to what India would do if Afghanistan fail to defeat New Zealand. "We'll pack our bags and go home," replied Jadeja with a laugh.

The left-arm spinner returned figures of three for 15 in India's match against Scotland and was adjudged player of the match for his efforts.

Urban India kids have higher chances of survival in 1st yr

The latest data on infant mortality rate (IMR) for 2019 released by the census office indicates the poor quality of maternal and child health services in rural areas as well as limited access to these. The IMR of urban India is 20 (20 babies below one year dying out of every 1,000 babies born) compared to 34 in rural areas, showing a stagnation in the efforts to bridge the rural-urban divide.

Speculation nation: Can Xi Jinping’s property tax deflate China’s housing bubble?

Analysis: President faces an uphill battle to undo a system that has led to a bloated property sector

Xi Jinping’s to-do list has seen a lot of ticks in recent months: more flights into Taiwan’s defence zone; suppressing dissenting voices in Hong Kong; clipping the wings of tech barons; outlawing the out-of-school tutoring industry. The list goes on.

However, one key initiative – introducing a local property tax – has attracted fewer headlines but is apparently so controversial within China’s ruling Communist party that even Xi is still only able to deal in trial schemes rather than wholesale change.

The 1918 influenza tore through Māori communities. Anti-vaxxers risk this again | Morgan Godfery

Some of New Zealand’s anti-vaxxers say that the Covid vaccine is a form of 21st-century colonialism – it’s not

One thing that characterises the typical anti-vaxxer, other than being wrong, is their short attention span.

In the space of a single conversation the enemy can range from 5G, the electromagnetic spectrum that can apparently spread biological matter as well as a phone signal, to Bill Gates, the Microsoft (“microchip”) billionaire allegedly at the centre of a nexus to command and control the world populace. In New Zealand, anti-vaxxers take this shopping list of modern hazards and foreign enemies and add their own local products. In one conspiracy prime minister Jacinda Ardern is part of an international plot to microchip New Zealanders using the Pfizer vaccine as the vector. Her reward? The UN secretary generalship.

West Bengal: Amid rise in COVID-19 cases, people visit Kali temples in large numbers

Kolkata: Amidst the rise in Covid-19 cases, devotees in large numbers gathered at the Dakshineswar temple on Kali Puja.

Even as 918 new Covid cases were seen in the last 24 hours and 14 new deaths, people in large numbers gathered in the Kali temples across the city especially in Dakshineswar temple.

Kakali Ghosh, who stays in North Kolkata, visited the Dakshineswar temple. She said that despite the pandemic she cannot miss visiting the temple during Kali puja.

Gourab Karmakar of Barasat who stood in the long line outside the temple said that it is a ‘heritage’ of his family to visit Dakshineswar temple every year on Kali Puja.

Notably, according to Hindu mythology, Kali is the first of the ten incarnations of Goddess Durga and is also regarded as the most aggressive form of Durga.

It can be recalled that both the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court had lifted the blanket ban on the bursting of crackers during Kali Puja and have permitted bursting of green crackers between 8pm to 10 pm.

Mumbai: Vidyavihar road over bridge to be ready by March 2023

Construction work of much awaited Vidyavihar road over bridge (ROB) will be completed by March 2023. The bridge that was sanctioned in 2016 will connect the LBS Marg and RC Marg.

Recently during a co-ordination meeting organized by Member of Parliament Manoj Kotak, BMC officials said that the work is going on and it is most likely to be completed by March 2023.

Confirming the development a senior officer of the railway who was also part of the meeting said, “Work is in full swing now, we are providing all types of support to the BMC.”

Vidyavihar needs faster east-west connectivity. A lot of schools, colleges and other educational institutions are present there. Currently, commuters have to take a detour through Ghatkopar or Kurla stations, which takes at least an hour more during traffic jams.

Asked about the delay, a senior railway official said, "BMC submitted revised general arrangement drawings for reconfirmation in December 2019, which was approved by the Central Railways in February 2020. The civic body then submitted a part of the design in July 2020, which received the nod in December 2020, hence work is in full swing now."

After completion of this ROB, connectivity to the Lokmanya Tilak Railway Terminus will also improve. The ROB will provide direct connectivity from LBS Marg to Lokmanya Tilak Railway Terminus.

The bridge will have a length of 480 m, of which 223 m will be on railway land above the tracks. Four girders, all up to 25-metres wide, will pass over the railway tracks.

"The bridge that is being constructed by the BMC and has received all clearances, including those from the railways. The ROB will have a girder of 99.35 m, the longest in the state," said a senior Railway officer.

Ayodhya Ram Temple to be ready by December 2023

The Ram temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, is expected to be ready by December 2023, according to Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Kendriya Sahmantri, Gopal. He coordinates with VHP leader and the general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, Champat Rai, and has been overseeing the temple construction. A reporter from The Free Press Journal visited the site on the eve of ‘Deepotsav 2021’ organised by the Uttar Pradesh government.

Ayodhya is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram. According to Gopal, in the next 15 days, the temple foundation work will be completed. “The construction is steadily progressing and we aim to open the temple for ‘darshan’ from December 2023.”

He furthermore added that after completing the temple foundation work by using Mirzapur and Bengaluru granite, the plinth will be built. We went 40ft deep into the ground and with engineering mix, have completed the foundation work. Once the five-foot raft is completed, the foundation will be ready.”

When asked which states had sent stone for the temple construction, Gopal replied, “Mainly two states -- Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan – have sent stone and other raw materials. Panchi Pahadpur sandstone will be used, while for the foundation, Jodhpur stone will be used. A lot of raw material has already come and is still being delivered. Also, granite from Bengaluru will be used. The temple will be 360 feet long and 235 feet wide, comprising five ‘shikhars’, of which the main one will be 161 feet, as high as a three-storey building.”

Around Rs 700-800 crore will be spent on the temple construction, while Rs 3,000 crore have been collected in donations, according to the temple trust authority.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of Tourism Gangapuram Kishan Reddy told reporters that Ayodhya would connect all states. “People from different states and countries will visit here. We are working together, so as to put Ayodhya on the map of international tourism. A lot of development will be carried out to promote Indian culture. Considering the tourism opportunity here, we are improving connectivity -- railways, roadways, airways. It will be one of the most crowded places of tourism,” he averred.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told the media that along with the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, there were various other projects being implemented by the Central government -- 500 temples and other religious sites in Uttar Pradesh were being given a facelift, with the work being carried out by his government.

As part of the ‘Deepotsav 2021’, the UP government, led by Yogi Adityanath, lit nine lakh lamps along the banks of the Sarayu, setting a Guinness record. At the event, the CM, in a public speech, criticised the previous government saying that before, public money was being used for ‘qabristans’ but under his BJP government, the funds were being used for the upgrade of temples. He declared that he had not forgotten his promise of building the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Foreigner held for hacking bank system and diverting ₹5.43 crore

The South Central cyber police arrested a foreign national for allegedly hacking into the online system of a bank from the Gulf region and fraudulently diverting ₹ 5.43 crore. As informed by the police, the money was diverted from the bank's three accounts to 78 other bank accounts in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, and other states.

The police said that the accused Michael Chibuzi Okonko, 29, was arrested from Delhi and is a key member of a cyber hacking gang. This is the fifth arrest in the case, however, the earlier four were mere beneficiary account holders who helped the gang by opening bank accounts to transfer the money, added the officials. The bank officials had approached the police after detecting unlawful transactions in August this year.

On the complaint of a senior vice president of the bank Dev Narayan, the South Central cyber police registered an offence of impersonation, cheating along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and began their investigation.

According to the officials, ₹ 5.43 crore had been transferred from three bank accounts to multiple accounts of other banks. Initially, the police managed to freeze accounts with a total balance of ₹86 lakh. The remaining money was already withdrawn by the fraudsters. Initially, the police started to track the beneficiary account holders in which the money had been deposited. One of the beneficiary, a woman from Assam, told the investigators that, a person posing as a doctor befriended her on social media in February this year. The 'doctor' claimed that he wanted to open a clinic in Delhi for which he required a bank account to transfer the money. He requested her to open a new bank, and she obliged.

The woman opened the account and sent the register sim card to the accused. He later diverted ₹ 6.12 lakh in her account.

A teacher from MP was similarly lured by the gang to open an account for them for a mere ₹ 10,000.During the probe, the police identified the ATM centre from which the money was withdrawn, the police later zeroed in on the foreign national who was captured in the CCTV camera while withdrawing the money. He was arrested in Delhi.

The police have seized 11 mobile phones, three laptops, and two hard discs from Okonko.
