The dark secrets behind big oil’s climate pledges

Oil companies and the banks that finance them are making empty promises – and getting credit for them too

JPMorgan Chase won glowing headlines last year when the global investment bank unveiled a commitment to counter the climate crisis.

The press amplified JPMorgan’s message – sometimes in JPMorgan’s own words. Fortune published a commentary article trumpeting the bank’s plans to “tackle climate change”. Six paragraphs into the piece, the writers noted they worked for the investment firm. (They were actually its top executives.)

What happened at Cop26 – day four at a glance

Summary of the main developments on the fourth day of the UN climate summit in Glasgow

About half the world’s fossil fuel assets could become worthless by 2036 under a net zero transition, new research has found. A drop in demand for oil and gas will reshape the geopolitical landscape, with countries that are slow to decarbonise likely to suffer but early movers will profit.

Country pledges at Cop26 could limit global temperature rise to 1.8C, according to the International Energy Agency. The figure is lower than the 2C prediction made a day earlier. However, others have warned not to get complacent with estimates. The world remains on “a 2.7 degree pathway, a catastrophic pathway,” said Selwin Hart, UN special adviser.

Ammonia from farms behind 60% of UK particulate air pollution – study

Problem is causing £8bn a year in health damage but can be tackled cost-effectively, say scientists

Sixty per cent of the tiny particles polluting the air in the UK are from ammonia leaking from farms, according to research.

The ammonia is released from livestock manure and urine and the overuse of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers. The gas drifts into cities and reacts with other air pollutants to form tiny particulate matter, called PM2.5, which is the deadliest form of air pollution.

Series-bursting firecrackers in high demand in Bhopal markets

BHOPAL: ‘Rassi bomb’ and ‘Mirchi bomb’, two of the most popular firecrackers among all generations, have flooded the markets once again ahead of Diwali. Only this year, the collector has banned any fireworks that would burst in series for a long time. The district collector had issued an order on October 31, stating the guidelines for Diwali celebrations, where apart from the parameters set for the firecrackers to be sold, it was mentioned that a ban would remain on the sale and use of any firecracker bursting in series.

Despite the orders from the administration, the markets in Bhopal were decked up with the popular firecrackers that have been selling every year in loads.

A seller at New Market in Bhopal requesting anonymity said, “These are the best-selling firecrackers among all the generations. We, as children, have burst them and our children have done the same. I understand the pollution concerns, but if they are available wholesale, we as retailers would definitely want to hike our business.”

While another seller who had set up his shop near Neelam Park said, “I have not bought any new series-bursting crackers this year as I was aware of the collector’s orders. These are just the leftover stock of Rassi and Mirchi crackers from last year. We understand the environment concerns too, but I cannot let the money I had invested in last year go to waste.”

“I don’t insist my customers on buying these, but if they want to I wouldn’t stop them,” he added.

A resident of Nehru Nagar, Shashwat Parekh, says his children enjoy bursting crackers that burst in series. But this year he had particularly told them not to burst those as they caused a lot of noise and air pollution.

“Though, when they saw these all over the market, they became adamant and I couldn’t resist. So, I bought them one packet of Mirchi patakha,” he said. A social activist working in the field of environment and climate change, Varun, said, “The use can stop only when the government orders a ban from the starting point itself. People won’t burst the undesired crackers if they do not find them in the market. It is human nature to get attracted towards something they have specifically  been asked to stay away from, which is bad.”

'Throw dust in the eyes of the people': Kerala FM K N Balagopal slams Centre's decision to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel

Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal on Wednesday said the Centre's decision to cut excise duty on petrol and diesel by a "small margin" of Rs 5 and Rs 10 respectively was "a temporary measure to save face" and "throw dust in the eyes of the people."

The Minister, in a statement, said that for any real difference to be made, the Centre should cut the special tax and cess of Rs 30 per litre levied by it on diesel and petrol.

He said the States were not receiving a share of the revenue collected via the additional tax which was being levied irrespective of the international price fluctuations of petroleum.

"The Central government today decided to reduce the excise duty on petrol and diesel by a small margin following strong protests from the people. This reduction has been made to temporarily save face in view of the rising public outcry across the country. This is actually a ploy to throw dust in the eyes of the people," the Minister said in the statement.

He further said the Left government in Kerala has not increased the State tax on petrol and diesel for the last six years. In fact, the State tax was reduced once during this period, he added. He said the Centre should immediately reduce the Rs 30 additional levy on petrol and diesel to help the people.

The Kerala Assembly on Tuesday had witnessed a war of words between the CPI(M)-led ruling front and the Congress-headed opposition over frequent fuel price hike in the country and the latter walked out of the House terming it as "State-sponsored tax terrorism."

Though the LDF government maintained that it was the Centre and not the State government which was responsible for the fuel price hike, the UDF members wanted it to forego the additional tax revenue generated on its sales for the sake of struggling commoners.

TMC will unleash violence during civic polls: BJP's Dilip Ghosh

Kolkata: BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh on Wednesday claimed that the TMC will allegedly unleash violence during civic polls to have ‘opposition free’ West Bengal.

Addressing the media, Ghosh said that even in the recently concluded bypoll, the ruling Trinamool Congress had created unnecessary tension by restricting even the candidates to cast their vote.

“In the last civic polls in 2015 journalists from Bidhannagar were injured after they tried to show the real picture of the violence by the ruling party. Even this year they will hold the same tactics and will try to make West Bengal opposition free,” said Ghosh.

Ghosh also added that the BJP is ready to give a tough fight to the ruling Trinamool Congress despite the odds and hurdles by the TMC.

Meanwhile, referring to Tathagata Roy’s tweet that slammed West Bengal heavyweight leaders for the bypoll debacle, TMC spokesperson and state general secretary Kunal Ghosh claimed that ‘to hide the inability, Dilip Ghosh is trying to malign the TMC’.

On Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress government had written a letter to Election Commission requesting permission to hold civic polls in Kolkata and Howrah on December 19.

However, on Wednesday, the Trinamool Congress government had written another letter to the Election Commission seeking permission to hold the rest of the civic polls in January.

According to TMC sources, the Election Commission had given an ‘affirmative nudge’ to the state government’s appeal to hold the two civic polls on December 19.

Attorney for Rust armorer suggests sabotage on set of Baldwin shooting

Lawyer for Hannah Gutierrez says ‘disgruntled’ person could have placed live round in box of dummy rounds

A lawyer for the armorer who oversaw weapons used on the Rust movie set suggested on Wednesday that someone deliberately put a live round into the gun used by Alec Baldwin when he accidentally shot dead a cinematographer.

Jason Bowles said his client, Hannah Gutierrez, had pulled ammunition from a box that she believed contained only dummy rounds that were incapable of firing. He said he thought it was possible that someone purposely placed real bullets, which look similar to dummies, into the box.

Can carbon trading reduce global emissions?

Carbon markets have become a vital tool to make super-polluters pay while rewarding those with low carbon footprints

Carbon markets are a key tool in helping to drive emissions from the economy by effectively putting a price on pollution. They can take different forms: from mandatory trading of ‘carbon permits’, to voluntary projects which can help to cut emissions to earn ‘carbon offsets’.

At the Cop26 climate talks delegates will be working towards fine-tuning a little-known, and technically complex, set of carbon trading rules to cut emissions using international carbon markets.

Biden plays up positives but frustrations apparent after Cop26 talks

Trip to Glasgow was heavy on dire warnings but light on deep emissions cuts – and ended with him blaming China and Russia

Joe Biden returned to the US in the pre-dawn gloom on Wednesday to a climate agenda still held in frustrating limbo by Congress, following his high-profile cameo at crunch UN climate talks in Scotland that was heavy on dire warnings but light on deep cuts to planet-heating emissions.

The US president had aimed to arrive in Glasgow for the Cop26 summit with historic climate legislation in hand, which he could use to brandish at world leaders who still harbor resentments over four turbulent years of Donald Trump, where the climate crisis was variously ignored and mocked.

Owen Paterson’s escape shows that the sleaze era is back | Martin Kettle

Despite the former minister being found in clear breach of lobbying rules, Tory MPs have stepped back to the corrupt past

Remember the collective shock that greeted the murder of David Amess less than a month ago? Back then, devastated parliamentarians of all stripes queued up to mourn their slain colleague as a victim of violent and unjustified public contempt towards working MPs.

Yet now, many of the same parliamentarians have taken a giant’s stride away from that reflective mood. Instead they have invited the public to stoke its contempt afresh. Not content with dismissing the motion to suspend the Conservative MP Owen Paterson over breaches of lobbying rules, today MPs overturned the entire system of parliamentary standards in place since the sleaze crisis of the 1990s. They did it, what’s more, with the government’s explicit encouragement.

Petrol price cut by Rs 5, diesel by Rs 10 as govt slashes excise duty on Diwali eve

You can grin on the eve of Diwali: the government has finally decided to mitigate common man’s misery by reducing the excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10, respectively. With effect from Thursday.

The reduction in excise on diesel is double that of petrol and will hopefully cheer up farmers during the upcoming Rabi season.

(Excise duty on petrol was hiked from Rs 19.98 per litre to Rs 32.9 last year to recoup gain arising from international oil prices which plunged to a multi-year low as pandemic gulped demand.)

According to sources, the government was driven more by its own pragmatic reasons and less by altruism. Spiraling inflation driven by fuel hike could upset the post-pandemic economic momentum; it could send for a toss prices of other goods — from daily essentials to luxury products; and this, in turn, would have depressed consumer demand.

"In recent months, crude oil prices have witnessed a global upsurge. Consequently, domestic prices of petrol and diesel had increased, exerting inflationary pressure,’’ a government statement said, trying to give the rationale for the abrupt decision. Higher inflation could also jeopardize the Reserve Bank of India’s plan to maintain a low interest rate regime that has helped the economy recover substantially after two waves of the pandemic, media sources pointed out.

All these months, the government had defended the higher taxes – possibly the highest in the world -- disregarding the public outcry. But more than anything the by-poll election results may have a bearing on the ‘rethink’.

The other more enduring option was to bring petroleum products under the ambit of GST, which was expected to significantly reduce petrol and diesel prices; but that was easier said than done.

The decision may be seen as a Diwali concession for frayed consumer nerves, though earlier this week, prices of LPG cylinders had been hiked by oil marketing companies by Rs 266.

Watch Video: Aarey colony's 'problem leopard', suspect behind 9 attacks, trapped

A sub-adult leopardess that was suspected to be involved in attacks on nine humans at Aarey milk colony since August 31, has been trapped on Wednesday evening.

The leopardess - identified as C 32 which was escaping the trap cages set up by forest department for over a month walked into one of the traps set up at Unit 31 at Aarey milk colony.

The latest attacks have brought back focus on the human-leopard interaction in Mumbai and have put the forest department on its toes to quickly trap this leopard from Aarey, where tribals and leopards have been coexisting for decades.

The leopard has attacked nine people since August 31, including three children aged four, ten and 14. Apart from this in September She had attacked a 55-year-old woman sitting outside her home at the Visava Workers Colony on Wednesday while the latest attack was at Aarey Colony Unit 7. The very next day a 19-year-old boy, Rajesh Rawat, a resident of Santosh Nagar, Goregaon east, was attacked as he was returning home after dropping his friend. Rawat was rushed to the HBT Trauma Hospital at Jogeshwari.

The Maharashtra forest was under pressure from locals and politicians to trap the leopard since the spate of attacks began. In the process two different leopards ended up walking into the traps on three different occasion, while C 32, which was suspected to be involved in the attacks kept escaping the traps.

Confirming the development Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Sunil Limaye said; " The leopardess that was identified for her involvement in series of attacks on humans was trapped on Wednesday evening. After this we are planning to release the other leopardess that was trapped the first time, the sibling of the one trapped now."

According to officials now that the one involved in attacks - C 32 has been trapped, they are planning to release C31 which was trapped the first time. "The one trapped the first time was kept in the nursery away from humans since the day she was trapped. We are exploring at possibilities to radio collar (C31) before releasing her. Even if it is not possible to radio collar, we will still release her since she was not involved in attacks," added Limaye.

Pakistan denies permission for use of airspace to Srinagar-Sharjah flight

Pakistan on Tuesday declined permission for use of its airspace to Go First's Srinagar-Sharjah flight, inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to the Valley last month.

Due to the decision, the flight from Srinagar to Sharjah will take more than an hour longer as planes will have to fly via Udaipur, Ahmedabad and Oman. The flight will also be more expensive.

On October 23, by flagging off the inaugural flight from the Sheikh Ul-Alam international airport in Srinagar, Shah had restored the direct air link between the valley and the UAE after 11 years. According to officials, until October 31, the flight was cruising through the Pak air corridor without impediment.

No reasons were assigned by the Pakistan government for refusing the permission, officials said. Go First, too, did not respond to PTI's request for a statement on this matter.

Air India Express had started a Srinagar-Dubai flight in February 2009 but it was discontinued after some time due to low demand.

Reacting to Pakistan's action, former J&K chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah tweeted that it was very unfortunate. ‘‘Pakistan did the same thing with the Air India Express flight from Srinagar to Dubai in 2009-2010. I had hoped that @GoFirstairways being permitted to fly over Pak airspace was indicative of a thaw in relations but alas that wasn't to be."

Blaming the Centre, PDP chief and former J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti tweeted: "It is puzzling that the Government of India didn't even bother securing permission from Pakistan to use its airspace for international flights from Srinagar. Only PR extravaganza without any groundwork."

Go First was known in its earlier avatar as GoAir.
