T20 World Cup: Team Indian don't have mental strength, says Gautam Gambhir

New Delhi: After the crushing eight-wicket defeat against New Zealand, former India opener Gautam Gambhir has slammed the Virat-Kohli-led side, saying that they have the skills but lack the much-needed mental toughness to win big knockout games in ICC tournaments.

India have succumbed to pressure and lost two successive matches, against Pakistan and New Zealand, in the ongoing 2021 Men's T20 World Cup.

According to Gambhir, the Indian team has the skills but they lack the mental strength to win important games in ICC events.

"Yes talent is one thing; you've got all the skills and do really well in bilaterals and stuff. But when it comes to these kinds of games and tournaments, this is when you have got to stand up and perform," said Gambhir on ESPNCricinfo.

''This game was literally like a quarterfinal. The problem is with the mental toughness of the side. Suddenly when you know you have got to win the game and can't make mistakes, in bilaterals it's different because you can make mistakes there. But in these kinds of games, I don't think India has got that mental strength," he added.

The former opener, who is often remembered for his two match-winning knocks for India in the finals of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 50-over mega-event in 2011, felt that someone should have put his hand up when it mattered most for the team.

"They have the skill and are a very dangerous side. But, unfortunately, we can keep talking about it that we need to stand by our team when it's not doing well but it's been a trend and it's been happening for a very long time in most of these ICC tournaments, whether it's the semifinals or the game (against New Zealand on October 31) as well. When it mattered the most for someone to put his hand up, they just couldn't," said Gambhir.

Meanwhile, Gambhir's opening partner Virender Sehwag mentioned that India's body language wasn't great in the game against New Zealand and they need some serious introspection.

''Very disappointing from India. NZ were amazing. India's body language wasn't great, poor shot selection and like few times in the past, New Zealand have virtually ensured we won't make it to the next stage. This one will hurt India and time for some serious introspection #IndvsNZ, '' Sehwag said in a tweet.

India have three matches remaining in the tournament and another loss will confirm their early exit from the competition. The Men in Blue will have to win their remaining matches by big margins to ensure their net run rate can be improved and they stand a chance at qualifying.

They will next face Afghanistan in their third match on November 3 in Abu Dhabi in the hope of turning their campaign around in the mega event.

Bhopal: MP has highest female IMR, dropout rate

BHOPAL: Notwithstanding the state government's claims that its flagship scheme - Ladli Laxmi Yojna - has improved the status of girl children, figures tell a different story. According to SRS (Sample Registration System) data published last month, the female infant mortality (IMR) rate in the state is 43, the highest in the country.

A high female IMR is the outcome of bias against the girl child in society. In MP, data shows, 43 of every 1,000 girls do not survive till their first birthday. This is the highest among all states and Union Territories. In comparison, female IMR is 33, 42 and 38 in Bihar, UP and Odisha respectively. All the above three are considered backward states. The Ladli Laxmi Yojana was launched by the state government in April 2007. According to the official website of the scheme, it has three main objectives: Developing a positive mindset with regard to birth of a girl child, improving sex ratio and bettering health and educational status of the girls. So far, around 39 lakh girls have been registered under the scheme. Earlier this month, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan launched version 2.0 of the scheme under which an additional Rs 25,000 would be given to the Ladli Laxmis on taking admission in colleges.

The sex ratio at birth (which is the best measure of preference for male child) in the state, instead of improving, has fallen over the years. It fell from 927 in 2012 to 925 in 2018 (SRS 2018). In this period, several states, including Punjab, Odisha, Maharashtra and UP have managed to improve their sex ratio at birth. A low sex ratio at birth clearly points at sex-specific abortions, say experts. The dropout rate for girls in MP at the secondary (classes 9-10) level is 21.8, which is way above the national average of 15.1. Among major states, only Bihar and Odisha are worse off than Madhya Pradesh in this respect.

Mumbai: Byculla zoo reopens for public, sees over 1,600 footfalls in one day

The Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, also known as the Byculla zoo opened its gates to the public on Monday after remaining closed for seven months due to the Covid-19 induced pandemic. The zoo drew over 1,600 visitors and garnered revenue of Rs 68,725 on Monday, authorities said.

According to zoo authorities, the two biggest attractions for visitors were the two Royal Bengal tigers named Shakti and Karishma followed by the Humboldt penguins.

After remaining shut for 11 months, the zoo reopened on February 15, 2021, but had to shut down again in April due to the second wave of Covid. The November 1 reopening has come after a gap of nearly seven months.

The zoo has lost a significant amount of revenue during the pandemic. Between March and June 2019, it had collected nearly Rs 1.87 crore through the sale of tickets. Before the lockdown, during peak season, its revenue collection touched Rs 4.5 - Rs 5 lakh per month. However, revenue collected up to March 15, 2020, was just Rs 1.92 lakh.

Director of Byculla zoo, Dr. Sanjay Tripathi said, "We handled a total of 1,621 people on Monday, this is excluding children below three years of age and senior citizens. During pre-Covid times the daily weekly average visitor count was to 4,000 to 5,000, which went down to 3,000 during weekdays between the first and second wave. The number of visitors is expected to increase during the weekend."

The Byculla Zoo also gets many visitors in the form of morning and evening walkers. However, currently due to Covid-19, only a morning walk is allowed in the zoo between 6 am to 8.30 am followed by the operational timings of the zoo which is 9.30 am to 6 pm. The entry fee for the zoo is Rs 50, however, the BMC last week appealed to children and senior citizens to avoid visiting the zoo owing to Covid-19.

Money Laundering case: Maharashtra minister Anil Deshmukh appears before ED; questions Param Bir Singh's 'whereabouts'

Former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh, who earlier skipped five Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons, finally appeared before the agency on Monday for questioning in a money laundering case registered against him and others.

He arrived at the ED office at Ballard Estate around 11.40 am accompanied by his lawyer and his associates. Deshmukh, 71, appeared before the agency after the Bombay High Court last week refused to quash these summons.

Deshmukh’s statement was recorded till late Monday night in connection with the criminal investigation being carried out by the ED in the alleged Rs 100 crore bribery-cum-extortion racket in the Maharashtra Police establishment that led to Deshmukh's resignation in April. The ED wanted to enquire with Deshmukh regarding the suspicious transaction of Rs 4.18 crore involving a Nagpur-based trust, and also the allegations made by now dismissed Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Vaze in his statement to the ED.

The agency had recorded the statement of Vaze while he was lodged at Taloja jail on May 19 and May 21, and he claimed that he was getting “direct instructions” from Deshmukh in different police cases.

“Vaze stated that he was called by Deshmukh at his official residence and was asked to collect Rs 3 lakh a month from bars and restaurants, and was handed over the list of bar owners. He arranged for meetings with various bar owners and stated that he had collected around Rs 4.7 crore from them between December 2020 and February 2021. He said he had handed over the money to Kundan Shinde, the then personal assistant of Deshmukh on latter’s instructions in two installments in January and February 2021,” the ED had said in its remand application filed in June.

In September, the ED had moved an application at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court against Deshmukh for non-compliance of ED summons under Section 174 (non-attendance in obedience to an order from public servant) of the Indian Penal Code, after Deshmukh had failed to appear before the agency despite five summons being served to him. Earlier, on July 18, the ED had carried out searches at Deshmukh’s house in Katol, near Nagpur, and his family home at Wadvihira village, near Katol. The next day, Deshmukh had issued a video statement and had informed that once the outcome of his petition in the Supreme Court was known, he will appear before the ED and get his statement recorded.

Also in July, the ED had also provisionally attached assets worth Rs 4.20 crore of Deshmukh and his kin, held in the name of his wife Aarti and the company, Premier Port Links Private Limited, under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The attached assets were in the form of an apartment in Worli, valued at Rs 1.54 crore, and 25 land parcels of book value of Rs 2.67 crore, located in Dhutum village in Uran.

The ED had initiated a money-laundering investigation on May 11 on the basis of an FIR, under Section 120-B of the IPC and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, registered by the CBI against Deshmukh and others for allegedly attempting to obtain undue advantage for improper and dishonest performance of their public duty for collection of funds to achieve the target of Rs 100 crore per month from various bars, restaurants and other establishments in Mumbai.

On June 25, the ED had arrested Deshmukh’s personal secretary, Sanjeev Palande, and personal assistant Kundan Shinde under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and had filed a charge-sheet in the court in the matter.

DESHMUKH RELEASES VIDEO

Deshmukh released a video before going to the ED office in which he said that he himself is deposing before the agency after the Bombay HC order came last week. “It was reported in the media that I was not cooperating with the ED. I went to the CBI twice after I was summoned. My petition is still pending in the Supreme Court but it will take time and hence I myself have gone to the ED,” he said. “I and my family cooperated with the ED when they raided us (in June),” he said.

Deshmukh questioned the whereabouts of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, saying he made the bribery allegations against me but where is he now? The Bombay High Court, in its judgment issued on October 29, said Deshmukh failed to prove that probe agencies had been acting in a mala fide manner against him. It said if Deshmukh apprehended his arrest by either the ED or the CBI, he had the right that was available to any other citizen or litigant to approach the appropriate court to seek protection.

The court, however, directed the ED to permit Deshmukh's lawyer to remain present within “visible distance but not audible distance” during the questioning.

Deshmukh, while denying any wrongdoing, had maintained that Singh made the allegations against him after he was removed from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner.

BHOPAL: District administration in Bhopal on Monday permitted only  green crackers on Diwali.  Green crackers can be identified by scanning the QR code on the cracker box using the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) mobile application.

On Monday, Collector Avinash Lawania  issued restrictive orders deciding the time limit for bursting crackers on Diwali, Christmas and New Year.

According to order, Green Crackers or Reduced Emission i.e. low noise crackers can be manufactured, stored, transported, sold and burnt. Firecrackers using barium salt will not be allowed to burst.

  • - 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali and Guru Parv.

  • - 11:55 pm to 12:30 am on Christmas eve

  • - 11:55 pm to 12:30 on New Year

The Supreme Court has prohibited the use of barium, lithium, arsenic, antimony, lead, mercury in firecrackers owing to its adverse impact on human lungs and eyes. It had also banned the use of joined firecrackers (laaris) owing to the huge noise, air and solid waste problem. In its October 23, 2018 order, the top court fixed the responsibility on district magistrates and police SHOs to ensure compliance of its order.

Fireworks whose intensity exceeds 125 decibels at a distance of 4 meters from the blast site will be prohibited. Firecrackers will not be allowed to be burnt within a distance of 100 meters from the declared peace area, collector order said.

The district administration and police officers will keep an eye to ensure that the orders of the collector are followed. Action will be taken under section 188 on violation of this, order added.

Prince Andrew’s criticisms of Virginia Giuffre may backfire, lawyers say

UK experts say accusing Giuffre of seeking a ‘payday’ at prince’s expense is risky

Prince Andrew’s attacks on Virginia Giuffre’s character in an attempt to get her sexual assault lawsuit against him thrown out may fail and risk doing further damage to his reputation, British lawyers have said.

Having initially attempted to prevent service of the suit, which alleges that he sexually abused Giuffre when she was 17, the prince’s lawyers went on the offensive over the weekend in an attempt to get her “baseless” claim dismissed.

Maharashtra govt's Diwali gift for BMC, BEST staff, announces highest ever bonus for employees

Diwali has come ahead of time for employees of the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) employees, figuratively speaking. They are pleasantly surprised by the Rs 20,000 Diwali bonus approved by the management and BEST Committee. On November 1, the BEST Committee approved this amount as bonus for every employee, as against the Rs 9,000 given last year.

The state government had announced the Diwali bonus recently but the Shiv Sena-led committee approved the same on Monday. This is highest-ever festival bonus that the employees of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and BEST have received so far. Sources said that the total amount that will be disbursed among the 34,000-plus works out to Rs 62 crore.

“We cleared the Diwali bonus for the BEST employees at the meeting,” said BEST Committee member Sunil Ganacharya.

The BEST Unions had threatened a protest on November 1 if the Diwali bonus was not disbursed; this move was retracted after the Maharashtra government agreed to do so. As per the state government, BMC officials and officers in the BEST will get bonuses of Rs 20,000 each, while teachers/non-teaching staff in secondary schools will get Rs 10,000 each. Health workers will get Rs 5,300 each. This decision will benefit over nine lakh BMC employees and around 34,000 BEST employees.

Amid the lockdown imposed to contain the pandemic outbreak in March 2020, it was the BEST Undertaking that remained instrumental in getting essential duty workers safely to and from work. Sources said that this was the reason the government decided to give bonuses to BEST staffers on a par with BMC employees.

Last year, the BMC gave Rs 15,500 in bonus to each of its employees while the BEST employees got Rs 9,000 each.

The bonus announcement was made at a meeting headed by top officials and Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar Deputy Mayor Suhas Wadkar, Standing Committee Chairman Yashwant Jadhav, BEST Committee Chairman Ashish Chemburkar, BEST General Manager Lokesh Chandra and Joint Commissioner (General Administration) Milind Sawant last week.

Recently, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) increased the dearness allowance (DA) for its employees to 17 per cent, from the existing 12 per cent ahead of Diwali.

FPJ Legal: Dabur's same-sex Karva Chauth ad removed due to 'public intolerance', says Justice DY Chandrachud

Supreme Court judge DY Chandrachud has expressed anguish over the withdrawal of a Karva Chauth advertisement featuring a same-sex couple due to “public intolerance”, saying there is a need to change the mindset of both men and women. The judge was referring to the advertisement of Dabur on Karva Chauth.

The advertisement, showing a women couple celebrating the festival, was withdrawn by the firm after facing backlash on social media and from a politician of Madhya Pradesh. “Just two days ago, all of you would know, of this advertisement which a company was required to pull down. It was an advertisement for Karva Chauth of a same sex couple. It had to be withdrawn on the ground of public intolerance,” Justice Chandrachud said.

The judge was speaking virtually at the launch of the nationwide legal awareness programme, 'Empowerment of Women through legal awareness', in Varanasi. The awareness programme was being carried out by the National Legal Services Authority, headed by the senior-most judge Justice UU Lalit, in collaboration with National Commission for Women and UP State Legal Services Authority.

Justice Chandrachud said that awareness about the rights of women could truly be meaningful if it is created among the younger generation of men. “Awareness is not only a woman's issue. I believe that the deprivation of rights of women if we have to find an answer to them, the origin must be in the changing of mindset, both of men and women. True freedom for women, in other words, is truly intersectional,” the judge remarked.

He further said that there are real-life situations that show that there is a great divergence between ideals of the law and the real state of society. He said that even though legislations like the domestic violence act, prevention of sexual harassment at the workplace act have been enacted to achieve the goal of fulfilling the constitutional rights of women, the judges come across injustice against women every day.

Justice Chandrachud stated that the entitlements which the law has created for women should not become a ruse or an excuse for perpetuating the domination of men. The apex court judge said the Constitution of India is a transformative document that seeks to remedy the structural inequalities rooted in patriarchy. “It has become a powerful tool to secure material entitlements and provide public affirmations of dignity and equality of women,” he added.

At the event held at Varanasi, several other top court judges Justices Vikram Nath, Krishna Murari, Judge, Chief Justice of Allahabad HC Justice Rajesh Bindal were also present.

T20 World Cup: Pakistan look to confirm semi-final spot with a win over Namibia

Pakistan will aim to maintain their remarkable consistency against a spirited Namibia and seal a semifinal spot in the T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

After a chaotic build up to the World Cup with England and New Zealand pulling out of Pakistan tours, the Babar Azam-led side has defied the odds and has become the team to beat in the tournament.

Following a historic win over India, Pakistan showed a few chinks in their armour against New Zealand and Afghanistan but that could not stop them from recording resounding wins.

If their in-form openers Azam and Mohammad Rizwan don't fire, Pakistan can rely on their middle-order and even if that is not enough, six-hitting machine Asif Ali will win the game for them on his own.

However, the team would be expecting more runs from veteran Mohammad Hafeez's bat. He is the only one to have not made a significant contribution in the top six.

In the bowling department, Pakistan will be looking to ensure that they don't allow Namibia to comeback in the game after taking early wickets, something they were guilty of in the Afghanistan clash.

After reducing the Afghans to 76 for six, Pakistan allowed them to score a challenging 147 and if it wasn't for Asif's six-hitting ability from ball one, the outcome of the game could have been different.

The team would also be expecting a lot more from Hasan Ali, who has proved to be its weakest link in the bowling department.

Namibia, who were blown away by Afghanistan on Sunday, will be looking to compete against a top side.

The debutants had no answer to Afghanistan bowlers, especially the pacers, on Sunday afternoon. Despite main spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman not playing due to injury, Namibians found the bowling attack too hot to handle.

Six Namibian wickets were worryingly taken by the pacers and Pakistan have a much better attack than Afghanistan.

They have already won a lot of hearts by making the Super 12s in their maiden appearance but captain Gerhald Erasmus has made it clear that they are looking to create an upset.

"We are aware of the challenges. We need to make use of this level. This is a stepping stone for the future," said Erasmus.

The performance of leggie Jan Nicol Loftie Eaton was a big plus for Namibia from the last game. Lead pacer Ruben Trumpelmann too would be aiming to provide the early breakthroughs which will be a must to put a rampaging side like Pakistan under pressure.

Uttar Pradesh: Won’t contest 2022 Assembly polls, says Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said he will not contest the coming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections himself even as he announced that an alliance between his party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal was finalised. Yadav said his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav, who broke away from the SP to form the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party Lohia (PSPL), will get the “due honour”. “Our alliance with the RLD is final. Seat-sharing is to be finalised,” Akhilesh said. The RLD enjoys support among farmers of Western Uttar Pradesh and is on the same page with the SP on the issue of opposing the Centre's three farm laws.

The SP has already announced an alliance with Om Prakash Rajbhar's Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SPSP).

Yadav, who is an SP MP from Azamgarh and regarded as the CM face of his party, said, “I will not be contesting the assembly election myself.” The SP chief, who was a Member of Legislative Council (MLC) when he served as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012-2017, did not give any reason for the decision. However, later Yadav said a final decision on his contesting the polls will be taken by the party.

On whether he has held any talks with the AIMIM or Mamata Banerjee's TMC for the state polls, he said there have been no such discussions. Terming his party's tie up with the SBSP as a natural alliance, Yadav said people in eastern Uttar Pradesh have accepted it and it will ensure the BJP's defeat.

Countering the “tall claims of BJP of helping people”, Yadav said, “Not even a single case was filed against BJP workers during Covid. As our workers were out for help, cases were lodged against them. The SP is the only party that can face BJP and stand tall before them in the interest of people. Farmers are also with the SP. This time there will be a change in the state and people of the state have made up their minds,” he said.

Akhilesh Yadav brackets Pak founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah with Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel; says 'they all fought for India's independence'

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday bracketed Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah with Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, saying they all fought for India's independence.

"Sardar Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and (Muhammad Ali) Jinnah studied in the same institute. They became barristers and fought for India's freedom," ANI quoted Akhilesh Yadav as saying at a public rally in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi.

"It was Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel who imposed a ban on an ideology," Akhilesh Yadav said, in a veiled allusion to the RSS.

Akhilesh also did not spare former allies, the Congress, saying there is no difference between the grand old party and the BJP. "Investigation of ED and CBI that is going on against us and other leaders is because of the Congress only. There is no difference between them (the BJP and the Congress). The Congress is the BJP and the BJP is the Congress," ANI quoted him as saying.

Reacting to the outburst, BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said, "Mulayam Singh ji will also hold his head after hearing this from Akhilesh Yadav, who has studied in Australia. The country considers Muhammad Ali Jinnah as the villain of the partition. Calling Jinnah the hero of freedom struggle is the politics of Muslim appeasement."

Madhya Pradesh: Registration window for B.Ed, M.Ed shut

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The registration window for admission in teacher education programmes, including B.Ed and M.Ed courses, closed on Sunday.

This window was for second additional round of centralised online admission counselling.

The registrations were accepted for seats lying vacant after four rounds of counselling in teacher education programmes in colleges across the state.

As many as 265 out of 3400 seats were lying vacant in 32 colleges offering B.Ed courses in the city. The vacancy figure for M.Ed courses stood at 158 seats in six colleges in the city. The M.Ed colleges here have intake capacity of 360 students.

Following results of colleges, Department of Higher Education (DHE) on October 25 approved a proposal for second additional round of counselling for admission in teacher education programmes.

Students who did not get seat in four rounds of counselling registered themselves and select nine colleges priority wise. They can get their documents verified at help centres set up by DHE till Monday.

DHE will release common merit list on November 6. The final merit list and allotment letters will be released on November 13. Students will be required to pay 50 per cent of course fee online for confirmation of admission from November 13 to November 18.

Remaining 50 per cent of the student will have to pay when colleges will resume classes.

Admissions in teacher education courses are granted through centralized online admission counselling. Their year, three rounds were held for admission. But nearly 25 per cent seats were still vacant in B.Ed colleges. Resultantly, DHE had approved one additional round.

That additional round also failed to fill all seats in B.Ed and M.Ed colleges. DHE therefore approved second additional round.

“There won’t be any more additional rounds now,” said Indore division additional director (higher education) Suresh Silawat.
