Need membership of NSG to give up coal: India at G20

In a bold move, India on Sunday said that achieving its climate goals may be linked to issues like its membership to the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group — held up due to China's opposition — and availability of technology as it sought to push for the inclusion of differentiated responsibilities that seeks the developed West to fulfil its commitments.

FBI failed to act on tips of likely violence ahead of Capitol attack – report

The FBI and other key law enforcement agencies failed to act on a host of tips and other information ahead of 6 January that signaled a potentially violent event might unfold that day at the US Capitol, the Washington Post reported on Sunday.

Among information that came officials’ way in the weeks before what turned into a riot as lawmakers met to certify the results of the presidential election was a 20 December tip to the FBI that supporters of Donald Trump were discussing online how to sneak guns into Washington to “overrun” police and arrest members of Congress, according to internal bureau documents obtained by the Post.

Ex-Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh is in Belgium, claims Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam

Days after two non-bailable warrants were issued against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, action initiated by city police for his suspension, former Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief Sanjay Nirupam on Sunday claimed that Singh was in Belgium. Nirupam has questioned how Singh reached Belgium and with whose help.

Nirupam tweeted, “He is the former Police Commissioner of Mumbai Police. He accused a minister of extortion. He himself is wanted in five cases. The police have said that he is absconding. Turns out, he’s in Belgium. How did he go to Belgium? Who gave him a safe passage? Can’t we get him back by sending undercover?”

Nirupam’s statement came after Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil had said that the state government was looking for Singh and it was not a “good thing” if he had left the country. Patil responded amid reports about investigating agencies fearing that Singh had fled the country.

Patil said, “We are seeking his whereabouts.” When asked whether Singh had left the country, Patil said, “I have heard something like that but as a government servant, he cannot leave the country without informing us. We have issued a Look-Out Circular (LOC) and if he has gone away, it is not good.”

A section of Mumbai Police claimed that Singh had not left India but was sighted in Manali and Chandigarh. Others pointed out that Singh may have fled to Nepal.

Amid the manhunt for him, three days ago, Singh sought the cancellation of his arrest warrant issued by the Chandiwal Commission. The state government has sought help from the Intelligence Bureau to find Singh. He has not been in contact with the Maharashtra government since August, when his ‘medical leave’ ended.

Diwali 2021: Huge rush of shoppers at Mumbai, Delhi markets; Covid-19 protocols compliance drops drastically

Diwali is just days away now and in most of India, socialising, shopping and community events are at their peak. In this backdrop, mask compliance has dropped drastically, from 13 per cent in September to only 2 per cent in October, social distancing compliance fell by 50 per cent from 6 per cent to 3 per cent while only 16 per cent of the citizens who travelled in October said mask compliance was effective and 96 per cent noted that social distancing was not effective. Even at large airports like Delhi and Mumbai, people are totally non-compliant when it comes to social distancing. These are the key findings of the survey conducted by LocalCircles, a leading community social media platform.

With Diwali shopping and socialising in full swing even as a pandemic lurks in the background, mask compliance has dropped drastically, with only two per cent of those surveyed now saying people in their area/city/district are in compliance. This question in the survey received 9,988 responses.

With festive travel on, only 16 per cent of those who travelled in October say mask compliance is effective during travel, especially at the airports, stations, bus stands. This question in the survey received 9,999 responses. On an aggregate basis, 96 per cent of citizens who travelled in October said there was no effective social distancing compliance during travel, in public places such as airports, stations, bus stands, etc. This question in the survey received 9,414 responses.

In online community discussions, it has emerged that while at airports, mask compliance is reasonably high, it is non-existent in bus stands and stations, as well as on road travel and is limited at railway stations. Bus and road travel is by far the largest in India, followed by railway travel, with air travel being the smallest segment.

LocalCircles has conducted an extensive study to determine how people are complying with mask and social distancing protocols in cities and districts in the festive season and during travel. The survey received more than 39,000 responses from 20,000+ unique citizens located in 366 districts of India. Forty-seven per cent respondents were from Tier 1 districts, 30 per cent from Tier 2 districts and 23 per cent were from Tiers 3, 4 and rural districts of India. 65 per cent of the respondents were men while the rest were women.

Indore: Fluctuating COVID cases give hiccups to officials

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Number of daily positive cases in the city had dropped to zero seven times in the last few days but the frequent fluctuation in cases is giving hiccups to the administration which is afraid of the inception of the third wave of COVID-19.

Moreover, the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had also directed the administration to remain alert during festivities while district collector Manish Singh also expressed concern over increasing cases and asked people to take the second dose of vaccine at the earliest.

As many as 42 positive patients were found in the last 10 days and highest cases in a day, in this period, were found on October 25 i.e. nine when the CM raised concern.

Similarly, eight cases were found positive on October 28 which dropped to zero on October 18. However, it again increased to eight on October 25 and dropped to 1 on October 29.

Witnessing the fluctuation in cases, city experts have raised alarm for increasing cases and said that the condition may turn worse if people do not follow protocol.

“Decrease in the number of cases doesn’t mean that we have got rid of the deadly disease. It is an alert for the citizens to remain vigil and to follow the norms to prevent the disease like they were doing for many months,” Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr BS Saitya said.

He added that with the decreasing cases, people have stopped wearing masks, using sanitizers, and following social distancing.

Three people gave wrong addresses

Out of eight patients found positive on Saturday, two of the patients don’t belong to Indore while three of them had given wrong addresses and their phone numbers were also switched off. One of the patients had left for Assam for his duty while a father-daughter duo was sent to Maa Ahilya Covid Care Centre.

Bhopal: 3 -day drama festival ends with ‘Samunder ka Kinara’

BHOPAL: A three-day drama festival ended with a play ‘Samunder Ka Kinara,’ at the auditorium of Rangshree Little Ballet Troupe in the city on Sunday.

Aahan, an educational, cultural and social welfare committee organised the festival. Directed by Susheel Kant Mishra, the play is based on Russian playwright Anton Chekhov’s stories.

The 45-minutes of the play revolves around a woman who feels unsafe and is afraid to live in this world. There is a person who shows the game of drowning in water to feed his stomach. He does not know how to swim. The story sheds light on the suffering of the class, which in a fast-paced era is being forced to perform risky feats for their livelihood. One day he really drowns. But the audience thinks it only for entertainment. They return to their respective homes with applause.

According to the director, the stories of Chekhov are still relevant. He says that the play is not just entertainment, it is also about the upheaval in the life of a person due to his circumstances.

About 375 passengers, the biggest single influx of asylum seekers in years, were taken to a reception centre on the island. Six others were detained for questioning and one woman was admitted to hospital on the island of Karpathos.

The Guardian view on Cop26: rhetoric must turn into action in Glasgow | Editorial

In the race to avert catastrophic global heating, there is no more wriggle room left

Six years ago, as the Paris accord was agreed amid euphoria at the 21st UN climate conference, the French hosts wisely insisted on a clause obliging countries to match promises with deeds. Having committed to try to hold global temperature rises “well below” 2C compared to preindustrial times – and aspire towards a limit of 1.5C – governments were mandated to produce updated plans in 2020, showing how they would actually achieve that goal.

Delayed by a year due to the Covid pandemic, the climate summit now beginning in Glasgow represents that moment of truth. In the words of Laurent Fabius, the former French foreign minister who presided in Paris, Cop26 “is the Cop of action, at which we apply the Paris agreement”. Boris Johnson has acknowledged that there is no prospect of a formal commitment to the 1.5C threshold in Glasgow. But if a pathway to that target is not kept open, the world’s leaders will knowingly be locking the planet into a journey towards environmental catastrophe. This year’s extreme weather events – the terrible heatwaves, wildfires and floods that have made headlines across the globe – are evidence that the destructive consequences of global heating are happening faster than expected and on a larger scale. The world today is 1.1-1.2C hotter than in the preindustrial era. Heating beyond 1.5C would deliver even more devastating droughts and crop failures. It would increase the chances of greater famine and ecosystem collapse.

Tonga reports its first COVID-19 case since onset of pandemic

The South Pacific island nation of Tonga reported its first case of Covid-19n on Friday, coaxing thousands of people to get vaccinated amid warnings of a national lockdown, reports CNN.

Tonga was one of only a few countries that had not reported a single Covid case since the start of the pandemic. But on Friday, Tonga's Prime Minister Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa confirmed its first positive case from a passenger who had travelled from New Zealand.

The passenger was fully vaccinated, had tested negative in New Zealand prior to the flight's departure, and was discovered among travellers staying at a hotel used for isolation and quarantine for new arrivals into the country. Tonga is a Polynesian country of more than 170 South Pacific islands and home to about 100,000 people. Though it hasn't reported a Covid case until now, the island nation declared a state of emergency in March 2020 and shut its borders to foreign nationals.

The Pacific nations of Tuvalu and Nauru are among the only countries in the world not to have reported a Covid infection. Turkmenistan and North Korea have also not officially reported any cases, though experts say those claims are unlikely to be true.

From Aachit Kumar to Nupur Sathija: Aryan Khan's nine co-accused in cruise drugs case get bail

Two days after the Bombay High Court granted bail to Aryan Khan and two others in the cruise drugs case, a special court that had rejected the trio’s bail pleas last week, on Saturday granted bail to nine co-accused. The total number of those who have secured bail in the case is now 14, out of the total 20.

Among those who were granted bail by the special court’s judge VV Patil on Saturday is Aachit Kumar, 22 – the only person seemingly connected with Aryan and Arbaaz. The NCB had claimed he was arrested based on voluntary statements of Aryan and Arbaaz given to it and that there were incriminating WhatsApp chats between Aryan and the 22-year-old which showed he was a supplier. The agency said it had recovered 2.6 gm from his residence. Aachit’s advocate Ashwin Thool had disputed the recovery in his arguments in court and produced images from CCTV cameras to show irregularities in the panchnama procedure. He said there were no independent witnesses present during the search as claimed.

Others who have got bail are Gomit Chopra, 28; Ishmeet Chaddha, 33; Shreyas Nair, 23; Nupur Sathija, 29; Bhaskar Arora, 26; Manav Singhal, 33; Samir Sehgal, 30; and Gopalji Anand, 35. Of these, Bhaskar, Manav, Samir and Gopalji were organisers of the event at the cruise ship. The NCB had claimed they were an integral part of planning the event where the alleged drugs bust happened. Their advocate Sajal Yadav assisted by Harsh Gangurde had argued that ticketing for the cruise was done through an online portal and that they had no control of who entered or lodged at the cruise, the aspect being completely in control of the ship’s management.

Nupur Sathija and Ishmeet Chaddha were guests on the cruise. From Nupur, the NCB claimed recovery of four tablets of Ecstasy and from Ishmeet, 6.5 gm of MDMA. From Shreyas Nair, 2 gm charas was allegedly recovered and from Gomit, 3 gm cocaine and Ecstasy pills were claimed to be recovered. Nupur’s advocate Ayaz Khan had argued that her arrest itself was illegal as she being a woman was arrested after sunset by a male officer. For Gomit, his advocate Kushal Mor had told the court that he is a Delhi resident and had never boarded the ship nor had connection with any co-accused. Detailed orders on the bail pleas are yet to be made available.

ICC T20 World Cup: Skipper Virat Kohli's hour of reckoning as India face New Zealand in 'virtual quarter-final'

Dubai: Virat Kohli will be facing the most defining test of his captaincy career as he expects his men to be the proverbial "phoenix rising from the ashes" when India take on a street-smart New Zealand in a 'do-or-die' ICC T20 World Cup Super 12 game here on Sunday.

Having endured a nightmare last Sunday against Pakistan, a match that they would like to forget in a hurry, India have a lot of course correction to do against the Kiwis, more so in getting the roles assigned for the players right.

It wont be easy against a quality New Zealand, which will come hard at India having also lost to Pakistan in their opening game. Tim Southee and Trent Boult, especially have been a nemesis for the Indians in big games.

However, their soft underbelly is batting where Kane Williamson is still not hundred per cent and Martin Guptill also had a foot injury. It's effective without being flamboyant, although, Devon Conway is a flashy batter.

And herein lies India's chance but for that, their bowlers need to implement the game plans perfectly, something they couldn't against Pakistan.

Even more important will be execution from two players on whom the team management has heavily invested -- a half-fit Hardik Pandya and an out-of-form Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who have been the weak-links of this Indian team. Hardik, who has not been the cricketer everyone feared since his back injury, is playing to save his India career.

That he hasn't exactly been truthful about the status of his bowling capabilities has been exposed and trying to roll his arm over at the nets speaks volumes of his desperation. His franchise Mumbai Indians are putting him back in the auction pool and time, indeed, is running out for him.

Bhuvneshwar could well be playing his last international tournament. His pace has dropped remarkably in the past two seasons and somewhere he has not been a patch of what his younger competitor Deepak Chahar has been in recent years.

Yet, India have punted on his experience and it's high-time that he delivers before being shunned into oblivion.

India have shown in recent times, at least, in Test arena that they can come back from brink with unforgettable performances but Kohli in his last assignment as T20 captain would like to change the script that always seemed to go awry at global events.

More so, because another failure at a mega event could well mean that there will be aspersions cast on his abilities as a white ball skipper and the 50-over leadership will also come under the scanner.

Kohli is a man, who loves it the tough way. He loves a good scrap and a situation where he envisages that the entire world (even if they are not) is out there to get him, conspiring against him and wants to see him fail.

He gets an adrenaline rush thinking about such a situation from where he is bailing out the team. But of late, Kohli, the skipper and Kohli, the batter haven't been in sync like it had been in the past.

Now there is a world class performer, who is ready to play the waiting game, anchor the innings and happy to bat at a strike-rate of '120-ish', letting others hog the limelight. It's an act of self preservation which he is keeping his and Indian cricket's best interests in mind as he is 33 and at least good six years of top-flight game still left in him.

India's presence till the business end is not just an emotional necessity for its billion fans but also a commercial requirement for the tournament to retain its vigour.

Even after being clubbed in the easier group where three matches, including Afghanistan should be literally walk-in-the-park for these stars who rake in mega moolah per IPL season but are now facing the fear of an early exit from the tournament.

With Pakistan already on six points having played all their tough games (India, New Zealand and Afghanistan) in the first week of Super 12s, they are expected to steamroll Namibia and Scotland en route their expected top place finish in group 2.

This leaves both India and New Zealand in a virtual shoot-out position as whoever wins has a chance to finish on maximum eight points and grab the second place in the group.

However with the dew playing a major role in the evenings, toss is indeed playing a very crucial role in the outcome of night matches. Kohli will be hoping to at least win the toss and may be ensure that KL Rahul and Co don't have to face Trent Boult's 'break back' swingers first up when some moisture would be on offer.

Suryakumar Yadav would like to put up a better performance and Rishabh Pant would certainly like to finish off in style after the kind of start he got against Pakistan.

After what Shaheen Shah Afridi did to India, India would certainly be wary of Boult, who is a more skilful operator than the Pakistani, albeit at lesser pace.

In a nutshell, Kohli faces an acid test of his leadership career, which is reaching business end.

Teams (from):

India: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Shardul Thakur, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Rahul Chahar

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell, Devon Conway, Tim Seifert (wk), James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Mark Chapman, Adam Milne, Kyle Jamieson, Todd Astle.

Madhya Pradesh: People should talk about their duties, says Patel

Sagar (Madhya Pradesh): Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and Jal Shakti, Prahlad Patel, laid the foundation of four roads under phase-3 of PMís rural road scheme in Kesli development block and Devri.

A sum of Rs 14.13 crore will be spent on the construction of the roads.

The country has completed 75 years of its independence, so instead of speaking about rights, citizens should talk about their duties, Patel said.

He further said that it was because of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's farsightedness that villages in the country were connected with one another.

At a meeting in Tedudabar in Kesli development block, Patel said that people should think about the nationís resources.

If the resources are recklessly used, nothing will remain for the future generations, he said, adding that the people have to save all public assets like roads, buildings and water resources.

According to Patel, the governmentís resolve is that drinking water should reach every house by 2023.

Many people are ready to pay Rs 15 or Rs 20 for a bottle of water, but they are reluctant to pay charges for water supplied by the civic body, but such people should change their mindset, he said.

He appealed to farmers to grow such crops as require less water for irrigation.

Former minister Harsh Singh also addressed the meeting. Singh said that the roads to be constructed would help the residents in the area.

General manager of the implementation unit of MP Rural Road Development Authority, Rajesh Chokse, presented a technical paper on the road project.

Loan camp extended for a day, to end today

2 decades of drought emptying out Andhra’s ‘blessed’ district

Anantapur in Telugu means “blessed with many things”. It's an ironic name for a place that has come to be known for what it’s not blessed with — rainfall. This district in Andhra Pradesh has seen 18 droughts in the last 20 years (till 2020), making it a living example of creeping desertification and mass migration.

Lebanon sentenced me to 10 years in prison for helping sick Palestinian children – I consider my work a badge of honour | Jamal Rifi

Madhya Pradesh: Cop shoots wife to death before committing suicide

Bhopal/Shahdol: A policeman allegedly shot his wife dead before committing suicide by his service revolver in Shahdol district, Saturday evening.

Police said sub inspector Hira Singh 37, was posted as incharge of Panwar police station in Rewa district. His family lived in Shahdol in a rented accommodation, said the police.

Deputy Superintendent of police (DSP) Sonali Gupta said the cop reached Shahdol in afternoon. Around 5 pm, his daughter heard shots which she construed as some fire cracker bursting. However, she entered the room after an hour and found her parents lying in pool of blood.

The girl informed neighbours and they informed police. A team of Kotwali police reached the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

Gupta said prima facie it appeared that Singh himself killed his wife before shooting down himself.

She said the cause of suicide and murder will be probed.
